A tough read-in both content and style, but a beautiful one.
By Courtney A. Weber
An unbelievably beautiful book. A slow read--needs attention and regular re-reads to make sense of it. The characters simply keep unfolding and blooming. You feel you could fall into them forever. The ending is both heartbreaking and up-lifting. Yes, yes, yes, I loved it.

GOOD FIRST BOOK, BUT MANY HOLES
By Christine E. Freedman
Hulme has a good sense of storytelling. I was disappointed by the lack of character depth, but learned something about The Maoris of New Zealand and the abnormal relationship between the child abuser and the child being abused.
Hulme is able to build a good character, but needs to work on exemplifying their attributes instead of just mentioning them. For instance, she tells us that the boy has an ability to see auras, and Kerewin is well read in philosophy, as well as well traveled, but these things were only mentioned and not exemplified by later thoughts or actions. Throughout the book Kerewin alludes to her horrible family situation prior to her absconding to the tower, but we never get to find out what it was that drove her into seclusion. And finally, when Kerewin has accepted her imminent death and makes a turn around, it is not obvious as to how or why this came about. Too many holes, or rather too much left to the readers imagination. Actions speak loudly, but in a book where we get the rare opportunity to get inside the character's head, I feel it necessary for the author to provide us with the thoughts that are the catalyst for the characters actions.
I applaud Hulme's stark descriptions of how the human body is subject to deterioration and death. As well as the insight that people are alcoholics because life is so depressing, meaningless, and mundane.
Even though I felt a lot of details were overlooked I would still encourage people to read this book, for the insight provided about abusive relationships and alcoholism.

A great novel of the damage and healing families inflict
By Alan Indiana
Keri Hulme's The Bone People breaks all the rules for me. I hate books that force me to struggle through the prose. I'm not a great fan of poetry. And I avoid stories of child abuse like the plague. So along comes The Bone People, which has the poetic density of the most abstruse 20th century poets, and it's the story of a child abused by his adopted father. And it is just plain gorgeous. Yes, the first chapter is tough (get through it, then after you've met the three main characters, go back and read it again: it's wonderful when you know what it's talking about). The writing becomes hypnotic; you don't read this book, you live it, you hear these people talking in your head when the book is closed. It makes you see your world differently. It was the best book I read in the decade of the '80s, and one of only a handful of books I have read twice. It's beauty does not fade on second reading. The Bone People is one of my desert island books.
