We wrote this book because, after a combined 60 years' of working with leaders on their development, we know there is a far better way to go about it. The current "state-of-the-art" of the Leadership Development field is not up to the task of developing leaders for the complex challenges we are facing now, let alone for the future.

We need leaders of greater effectiveness and integrity, mastery and maturity, courage and compassion, competence and character, consciousness and wisdom. We need those leaders now. The Definitive Guide to Transformational Leadership

This 384 page work of art raises the bar on how we develop leaders globally and serves as a handbook for best practices for growing consciously competent leaders. As a leadership consultant and long-time practitioner of the Leadership Circle Profile, I have read and recommended a handful of books over the years such as What Got You Here Won’t Get You There and Servant Leadership. Bob and Bill’s book, however, cracks the code on leadership development by providing something that’s been profoundly missing in the leadership genre up until now.

At present, most books focus on a leader’s ability to master the outer game as the end game to generating effectiveness and results – the world of skills, strategy, competencies and behavior. This book posits that in the end what really matters is the mastery of the inner game – one’s level of consciousness or a "mature interiority" comprised of a leader’s beliefs, assumptions and wisdom - that drives the outer game. The structure of the mind actually determines performance. Period.

This book invites you to undertake the demanding and yes, messy and very personal journey of leadership transformation from the inside out. The author’s impart that this journey is not for the faint of heart and they are right. And, in fact, it is an imperative to individual and organizational health, and bottom line results. For those of you CEO’s who typically shy away from anything “touchy feely,” rest assured this book is not simply about the profound inner work of leadership, but highlights the importance of simultaneously maturing your executive leadership team to create alignment and deeper conversations that extract collective intelligence. In sum, Bob Anderson and Bill Adams are the real deal. Mastering Leadership is a very thorough, compelling, authentically written manifesto.

This book delivers on the Promise of Leadership

Mastering Leadership is an important book in an ocean of leadership development literature. It ties together disparate theory work in a way that presents a coherent and actionable pathway forward, like few leadership books have. There are many theories on how to lead, with few offering the significant body of hard data that Anderson and Adams provide in this book. There is a saying in the business arena, that “If it is not measurable, it did not happen.” This book is a great balance between hard data and the art that leading is. It addresses the leadership soul in a data driven manner, while still finding time to incorporate poetry that resonates deeply within us.

This book can help the 21st century leader develop themselves to meet the challenges that our world is presenting us. For leaders today, the name of the game is leading from a framework that can handle the complex nature of the challenges we face. The universal framework presented in this book weaves the best thinkers on leadership of our time into a model that can help transform the ways we lead. This book is a challenging read, and so it should be. As a practitioner of leadership development, I believe this book challenges the status quo in our field. It presents a provocative message, and developmental pathways for people to develop into leaders our world needs – a must read.

An approach to developing leaders that might just save the planet!

I can only imagine that when Bob Anderson and Bill Adams set out to write Mastering Leadership, they had little idea what they'd signed up for. �Looking now at the finished product--at the intricacies of theory and experience woven together into this coherent tapestry--I’m convinced that I’m seeing a masterwork of grand proportion. �Everything is in there, and is laid out in an overarching structure that takes the reader somewhere. �It’s not a stew; it’s more like a seven-course meal. �(Oh, and the dessert! �That last chapter!). �The work of weaving to draw together the threads of insight from a lifetime of practice and hard-earned wisdom, and then translating it all into an accessible, interesting—even fascinating—story must have seemed to be an overwhelming challenge at times. �Kudos to the authors for persevering!

In the roughly twenty-five years that I’ve worked in the same field as Anderson and Adams, I’ve read many of the same books and wrestled with the application of theory to practice; however, the synthesis of it all has remained, for me, a largely intuitive one. �I have been able to teach and coach leaders using pieces-parts, but haven’t seen the systematic unfolding of it all. �Until now. �This book does it for me, and I predict it will for many others. I’m glad that Mastering Leadership exists, especially for the sake of younger practitioners (relative to me, that’s most of them!) who have time to build their practices on this scaffolding.

One of the highlights for me is the artful explication of the five levels of leadership: Egocentric, Reactive, Creative, Integral, and Unitive. Each of these reflect the melding of well-researched leadership theory with the latest in thinking about adult stages of development. This intersection of theoretical frameworks is what makes this book unique. The authors claim to have laid out a “Universal Model of Leadership” and this is why.

The four case studies are a terrific addition to the conceptual flow and personal stories that make up most of the book. �They show the kind of business application and change processes that business and organization leaders will relate to and welcome. �

Finally, the ultimate chapter on Unitive Consciousness is a brilliant piece of work! �How does one use words to talk about something that is ultimately pre- or post-linguistic? �The whole concept is “out beyond ideas,” and doesn’t lend itself to description—only experience. �It’s vital to have it in the book as the capstone, but I’m glad it was a short chapter, because to go long on this topic might lose some readers; as it is, I think it’s a satisfying taste test (with just a�soup�on�of “mind cramp” tossed in!). �

All in all, this is a seminal book that will shape the field of leadership development for decades to come.
