The fourth chronicle of Collins's Nate Heller (True Detective et seq.) is set in Chicago and Las Vegas in 1946. When a gangster shoots the private detective's client, gambler James Ragen, Heller assigns himself to investigate the case. During his sleuthing, Heller meets and falls in love with Ragen's niece, Peggy Hogan. She's one of the few fictional characters in the nostalgic story that features real people and parallels actual incidents of the times. The assault on Ragen is a minor part of the events when Heller and Peggy become involved with Ben ("Bugsy") Siegel, Virginia Hill and other notorious mob figures in Las Vegas. Generating suspense, the author describes Siegel's murder with the detective at the scene and details the shaky beginnings of the Flamingo Hotel, Siegel's unrealized dream of a luxury mecca for gamblers. There is such immediacy in narrator Heller's voice that the reader doesn't need the afterword about the novel's historic base.

I'd appreciate your help!

I'm a huge fan of Max Collins, specifically his Chicago PI Nate Heller. And I'm not even a huge detective novel guy!

I've followed the character Nate Heller from 1930s Chicago to 1960s Hollywood...and never doubted for a minute that Collins' characters WEREN'T involved in the crimes he has investigated. The work is THAT good! For me, it's all about the historical facts presented in a remarkably readable way.

In Neon Mirage, the reader follows the beginnings of early Las Vegas. The mobsters, the movie stars, the politicians are all there--fleshed out and totally believable. If you're at all interested in the FACTUAL history of the mob or how Bugsy Segal turned the desert into America's 'sin city', I highly recommend Neon Mirage. It--like ALL of Collins books-- is a great way to study history, while immersed in a great detective novel. When you finish, you realize, "Hey, I didn't know THAT!!"

Here's the reason for the title of this review:I've gone through all Collins' Nate Heller books, and I wish I COULD find another writer who can weave history with fiction as well as Collins does. Each time I read a Nate Heller book, I've not only been thoroughly entertained, I've come away with so much factual information! If any of you has a favorite author/series/character that does that for you--would you be kind enough to add a comment pointing me in the right direction?

Meanwhile, grab a copy of Neon Mirage. Or, better yet, start with "True Crime" or one of the earlier Nate Heller books...and work your way through the series. If you're a history buff, you'll like them for the information. If you're a mystery/detective buff, I think you'll be happy to meet Nate Heller!

Nate Heller meets Bugsy Siegal

This is another excellent entry in Max Allen Collins' Nate Heller series. The first half of the book is about a 1940s mobster hit in Chicago but the second half, and for my money, the best part of the novel is an interesting portrait of the mobster, Bugsy Siegal and the building of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas in 1947.

Collins throws in a whodunit plot line, which is fun but still plays second fiddle to the portrait of Siegal. The mob history remains the central focus and, as usual, Nate Heller acts as more of a witness to history than a classic private eye. It all adds up to an enjoyable read that made me want to read more about the history of Las Vegas. And read more Nate Heller novels.

What happens in Vegas....

This is the story of how a sleepy little town in Nevada became a mecca for gamblers and other sinful types. It is also the story of Bugsy Siegal, a want to be movie star and mobster. The story is told as the investigation by Nate Heller of a murder back in Chicago. Needless to say, there is a lot of history told here but never a lecture. Collins is one of the greatest in this kind of storytelling. Read the notes at the end of the book to find how much is fact, a whole lot, and what is created for the tale. If you ever heard of a town called Las Vegas, read how it got its start. Truly fascinating, you won't put it down.

Practice tests are a mess - 3 errors in one section

Something catastrophic must have happened to the quality-inspection team at McGraw-Hill, because this book has been published with an alarming number of errors. We just finished part (not even all) of the first HSPT practice test, and ran into absolute gibberish on three math problems, as follows:

1. On problem 70, test-takers are told to examine figures (a), (b) and (c). What appears below are three figures labeled (a), (b) and (a). That would be a forgivable proof-reading lapse if it weren't for the fact that ....

2. On problem 102, a fraction is presented with one denominator in the problem -- and an entirely different denominator in the answer set. There are no multiple choice answers that work for the initial version. You can't solve the problem unless you can deduce that a key fraction has been entered incorrectly.

3. On problem 112, none of the provided answers will solve the problem. Turn to the answer section to see what's up, and one of the letter choices is deemed correct, with an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT VALUE provided for that choice. This isn't a test of math skills; it's a test of psychic powers.

We bought this book because it was slightly cheaper than the Princeton Review or Kaplan alternatives, and I foolishly assumed that all three providers deliver roughly the same caliber of work. My advice: pay a little extra for a different guide. Good test-prep books should reduce students' stress levels and help them prepare confidently. This book fails badly on both counts.

Very helpful

I bought this book for my daughter to help her prepare for the high school entrance exam. She did not read the book from cover to cover. However, the information was very helpful. The content allowed her to understand how each section of the test would be presented and the time limits associated with each. After the test, she expressed her appreciation for having the opportunity to review the book. It provided her a better understanding of what to expect for each section of the exam.

Too many proof reading errors - I do not recommend this book.

I am a math tutor and have been using this book to prepare two students for the Catholic High School Placement Test. Their parents purchased this book. The book has numerous proof reading errors in the Quantitative sections of the practice tests. The typical error is when the student is shown three figures, a, b, and c and asked to compare them. The proof reading error is where the figure C should be, there is an exact duplicate of figure A.
I can forgive this happening once in a book, but when it happens multiple times in a specific practice test, the publishers have failed to produce a reliable book. I recommend that Amazon discontinue offering this book.

About the Author
Major General Perry M. Smith, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, holds a PhD in international relations from Columbia University. During his thirty years in the Air Force, Smith commanded an F-15 fighter wing in Germany, served as the Air Force’s top planner, and was the Commandant of the National War College. He has served in leadership positions in four nonprofits, including as secretary of the board of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. He has had extensive experience as a motivational speaker, workshop leader, and military analyst for both national and local media.

Brigadier General Jeffrey W. Foley, U.S. Army (Ret.), a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, holds a master’s degree in computer systems from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in national security policy from the National Defense University. Having served for more than thirty-two years in the Army, he is now an independent consultant and frequently requested motivational speaker and leadership development facilitator. In addition, he has become an active member of boards of numerous nonprofit organizations, both local and national.

A must for your leadership bookshelf

This book begins with the key leadership foundations of self awareness and character. From there the book provides the leadership blueprints for both leading people and organizations in an easily accessible format. The book is well researched and is filled with lessons learned in the real world from both successes and adversity.

I have been a senior leader, consultant and educator. Rules and Tools is a book I always recommend for people newly promoted into leadership positions because it provides a complete map of the territory leaders need to be familiar with in order create healthy organizations.

I highly recommend this book. I have used it and General Smith in senior leadership programs for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Heath and Human Services with excellent results. You cannot go wrong buying and using this book.

Handy Guide for managers and leaders

The latest edition of "Rules and Tools" is a useful reference for many of the day-to-day issues that challenge managers and leaders.The chapters on 1-how best to incorporate new electronics in management and 2-the motivational problems posed by not-for-profit organizations and boards are a welcome addition. Checklists and references give this guide added utility.

Good Leadership and Management

I have worked for and with co-author Perry Smith and have seen him employ the ideas from Rules and Tools with great success. He has done a real service by capturing and refining his concepts in this latest edition of Rules and Tools for Leaders.

Rules and Tools is a great resource for anyone who runs a business, who manages an organization of any type, or who aspires to managerial and leadership positions. As mentioned in the introduction, this is not a management theory book; rather, it is a concise set of ideas that if followed will help you become a better manager or confirm that you are already doing a good job. I would wager, however, that even for the latter, there are very few of us who have not occasionally done something clumsy or inept that could have been avoided with prior reference to Rules and Tools. Thus, this book is a must for the new leader and more than valuable even for the veteran.

Rules and Tools is full of straight-forward checklists that serve to prepare you for a position or to provide an easy review of your current performance. (Of course, many will find it amusing, and perhaps instructive, to run the checklists on people for whom they work--and what they choose to do with their results is even nicely covered in the "Working for the Boss" chapter.)

The chapters in Rules and Tools progress logically from preparation for leadership through handling a variety of challenges with a number of special insights spread throughout.

For example, in the chapter, "Making Tough Decisions," the authors provide an expanded checklist to complete before beginning execution of a major course of action. In other words, think before you leap--a surprisingly violated principle. This "Tough Decisions" checklist serves very well for an internal Red Team review prior to execution--a near necessity to reduce the probability of serious error. We often think that Red Teams must come from outside the organization, but in fact, the executives of an organization can do a very good job of Red Teaming their own plans--if they follow something like the checklist proposed in Rules and Tools. Also in this chapter is a good (although brief) allusion to the dramatic difference between strategy and tactics. Most people (leaders of large organizations included) tend to think in tactical rather than strategic terms with the result that a plan has great execution but to no genuine strategic end. The authors cite the tactically brilliant and strategically inept Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a classic example.

The authors make a similar point in their chapter "Leading During Crisis and Change." Organizations (and their leaders) in crisis situations, tend to get target fixation where all they can see or think about is solving the crisis itself. Although solving the crisis is important, equally important for the organization is coming out of it as well positioned as possible for success in the future. It does little good to solve a crisis if doing so creates downstream an even worse situation. To help guard against this very real threat, the authors suggest creation and operation of an "opportunity team" which understands the thrust of the crisis, but whose job is to look for opportunities while the skies are darkest. Many now defunct companies (and countries) might well have survived and thrived had they followed this advice.

As someone with extensive experience in a variety of organizations (including my own), I enjoyed reading Rules and Tools and recommend it highly as a resource to be studied and frequently referenced by anyone in or approaching an executive position.

So bad. Couldn't even finish it

This book was so hard to get into. It is poorly written and a ridiculous premise. I hate how weak the main character is and the twin brothers are basically assaulting her and taking advantage. She's an idiot for letting them do that to her. And the way Cole speaks to her is just ridiculous. He barely knows her and wants to cherish her all of a sudden? Such a bad book.

SPOILER: The twins were jerks in the worst way. They treated the female lead (who had major self-esteem issues) with such blatant disrespect that I was pissed off every time one of them conversed with her. I wish it had been solely about the oldest stepbrother Cole.

Great Resource for A Beginning Teacher

I got this book to help me out with my field experience in first grade and I love it! There is a wide range of different topics and activities, so it is perfect for someone who is just starting out in teaching. There was a wide range of activities for different types of learners- songs, games, activities, reproducibles. I can't wait to try these out in a year or two when I have my own classroom!

About the Author

Anita L. Feller, PhD, CPA, has taught accounting at the University of Illinois since 1990. She is contributing author to Wiley CPA Exam Review: Financial Accounting and Reporting annuals and contributing author, with David Ziebart, of Introduction to Applied Professional Research for Accountants, Second Edition. She has also coauthored multimedia training products for CPA review materials and teaches both financial accounting and reporting and business and economics concepts for CPA Exam preparation.

Good book

The author has spent a lot of time reviewing the research part of the exam. This book was good for me in two important ways:

1. It provides a useful outline of all the standards (with brief summaries of contents) to review and be familiar with before sitting the exam.

2. She concludes that the way the CPA exam search engine returns search results (especially for advanced searches) is not great due to some peculiarities and you can lose a lot of time trying to figure out where the data is that you need.

Regarding point #2, it's such an important conclusion based on her research, I think I would have put the conclusion towards the beginning of the book so it was clear why we should focus on knowing our way around the standards so well.

The author recommends relying more on the Table of Contents in the CPA exam infobase. Her book shows you how to do that and also has some other useful tips on exam functionality.

I'm happy I got this book and would recommend it.

If you want to over-study

Professor Feller does a very good job in explaining the details of FARS system.
Just like the reviewers before me, I truly felt that she was trying to help, make things easier for CPA students.

That being said, this book won't be necessary unless you want to over-study yourself with crazy amounts of authoritative literature. This book does a great job in detailing out which topics you should focus on & why, but the bottom line is that you have to get your hands on either hard copy of FARS CD and thoroughly study them.

I for one do not think that I should be taking notes on bunch different ARB or FAS article numbers and memorize which topic is being discussed in each of them. The only beneficial part of this book for me was at the very end, where she talks about what types of questions would most likely be on the exam & how to look for them through search engine.

In sum, if you are trying to get the quick tips on how to 'effectively' save your time & search for the right articles on the CPA exam, consider getting this book - but that is paying over $20 for mere 30 pages of information. Otherwise, you can probably pass.

Studying ridiculous amounts of articles won't prove your worthwhile as research portion is relative small on CPA exam and you can find the most articles with good search technique, not by reading how to study & memorize all of them.

With all the CPA review materials out there, I haven't found ANY that do a very good job explaining the research part of the exam. This book is excellent. I know the research part isn't a large percentage of your exam grade....but a few points here and there can make a huge difference...believe me. I just received a 74 on one exam part recently. I think this book will add at least a few points to my score. And for only about 20 bucks.
