How to Read the Bible, by Harvey Cox

Renowned religion expert and Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox deepens our experience of the Bible, revealing the three primary ways we read it, why each is important, and how we can integrate these approaches for a richer understanding and appreciation of key texts throughout the Old and New Testaments.

The Bible is the heart of devotional practice, a source of guidance and inspiration rich with insightful life lessons. On the other side of the spectrum, academics have studied the Bible using scientific analysis to examine its historical significance and meaning. The gap between these readings has resulted in a schism with far-reaching implications: Without historical context, ordinary people are left to interpret the Bible literally, while academic readings overlook the deeply personal connections established in church pews, choir benches, and backyard study groups.

In How To Read the Bible, Cox explores three different lenses commonly used to bring the Bible into focus:

  • Literary—as narrative stories of family conflict, stirring heroism, and moral dilemmas;
  • History—as classic texts with academic and theological applications;
  • Activism—as a source of dialogue and engagement to be shared and applied to our lives.

By bringing these together, Cox shows the Bible in all its rich diversity and meaning and offers us a contemporary activist version that wrestles with issues of feminism, war, homosexuality, and race. The result is a living resource that is perpetually evolving as our understanding changes and deepens from generation to generation.

Review
” An absolutely masterful book by one of the great theologians of our age, and of inestimable value to both scholars and beginners.” (James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage)

“Fifty years later Cox… is still provocative. How to Read the Bible is a tour through both the Bible and the history of biblical criticism. Cox shows he has lost none of his talent for expressing complex ideas in accessible ways.” (U.S. Catholic)

“Scholars and students will be gratified by this pragmatic but profoundly insightful volume. The Bible is a complex, textured volume that can amaze and inspire, but also confuse and perplex. Cox has given readers a great gift—a clear path toward a fuller and richer appreciation for the sacred text.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)

“In this important book, Cox takes readers of all ages and all spiritual traditions on an excursion through some of the most confounding and deeply difficult questions bible reading has to offer. Best of all, he shows us how to go beyond the words and so become more spiritual.” (Joan Chittister, OSB, author of Between the Dark and the Daylight: Embracing the Contradictions of Life)

“Cox reads the Bible as an engaging storyteller who portrays the real life drama embodied in the narratives. He also reads as a scholarly interpreter of texts, and a source of experiencing the spiritual life. Read and you will discover an integrated and intriguing way to read the Bible.” (Murray W. Dempster, Director of the Center for the Study of Global Pentecostalism at Southeastern University)

“No one who reads this will ever again approach the Jewish or Christian scriptures in the same way. This is a must read for the religious, the secular, and everyone in between. A monumental work, and fun to read.” (Alan Dershowitz, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law emeritus at Harvard and author of Abraham: The World's First (But Certainly Not Last) Jewish Lawyer)

“Harvey Cox is a trustworthy and fearless guide to the Bible who brings us into dialogue with all its dimensions—from the literary and historical to the spiritual and political. In Cox’s company, the Bible becomes again a book that can change our lives.” (Stephanie Paulsell, Houghton Professor of the Practice of Ministry Studies, Harvard Divinity School)

“Weaving individual stories with contemporary biblical criticism, Cox presents a case for reading the Bible both as an intellectual discipline and a spiritual journey…. A handy introduction for those who are interested in a constructive analysis of the Bible.” (Library Journal)

“Whether he is following in the footsteps of Moses…[or] looking over the shoulders of Gospel writers…Cox proves to be a skillful interpreter of the Bible. How to Read the Bible shines and shimmers with all the wisdom Cox has accrued from many years of teaching.” (Spirituality & Practice)

“Harvard’s famous, forward-looking professor of divinity… Harvey Cox demonstrates how various critical methods clarify [the Bible’s] meanings at the time it was written and in ages thereafter, thereby helping readers answer questions about its meaning now. For thoroughgoing amateur Bible students, a godsend.” (Booklist)

“Harvey Cox does a service to anyone seeking to look at the Bible through 21st century lenses… What Cox manages with bringing the text into a new generation is a breath of fresh air [and]… a renewed heart for the scriptures... Cox brings a conversation back to the Bible.” (Clarion: Journal of Spirituality and Justice)

“If How to Read the Bible is read by the average American, our arguments about the Bible will be much more informed--and much less contentious. ... A splendid work by a renowned scholar.” (The Association of Mormon Letters)

“Harvey Cox, professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School and a well-traveled interpreter of things secular and spiritual, provides a word of guidance to those who wish to find in the Bible spiritual meaning for today.” (Christian Century)

“How to Read the Bible is an engaging, inspirational and accessible book by one of America’s pre-eminent scholars of religion, Harvey Cox.” (National Catholic Reporter)

From the Back Cover

For many people, the Bible lies at the heart of their faith, an ageless source of inspiration and guidance. On the other side of the spectrum, trained biblical scholars study the Bible using a variety of modern historical and literary approaches. But there is a wide gap be-tween these two groups of readers, a gap that brings negative consequences for both. Without an awareness of historical context, ordinary readers easily slip into a literal interpretation, while scholars sometimes overlook the deeply personal significance the Bible has for people in churches, synagogues, and Bible study groups.

In How to Read the Bible, renowned Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox shows how these different ways of approaching the Bible can be reconciled to the enrichment of all. By discussing a range of biblical books from Genesis to Revelation, he demonstrates how the historical analysis of the Bible, rather than undercutting its spiritual significance, can enhance and deepen it. Drawing on some of the commonly used modes of biblical scholarship, such as archaeology, cultural studies, and literary criticism, Cox opens up a rich, diverse, and contemporary version of scripture, one that wrestles with issues of feminism, war, homosexuality, and race. The result is a Bible that is a timeless but contemporary resource for all.

A great read that completely changed the way I read the Bible. The book gives historical and social context to the writings in the Bible and helped me clear up several suspicions/misgivings about some of the text and stories I have struggled with.

Soul, Self, and Society: A Postmodern Anthropology for Mission in a Postcolonial World, by Michael Rynkiewich

Globalization and urbanization are twin forces that are powerfully shaping economics, politics, and religion in the world today. Traditional anthropological theories are inadequate to recognize and analyze trends such as global migration, diasporas, and transnationalism. New departures in anthropology and the social sciences seeking to address these and other phenomena can help us critique and reshape the theology and practice of Christian mission. Today most societies are no longer monocultural. In such multicultural contexts any given individual may be competent in several cultures, several languages, several social networks. What does it mean to be in mission with people on the move--people who present themselves in one social identity, language, and culture within a particular setting, and then in another setting, even on the very same day, present themselves in another social identity, language, and culture? In the face of widespread, rapid movement of peoples and their increasingly fluid and multifaceted identities, will the missionary settle down somewhere or be itinerant along with the people? How are perplexing new questions in particular contexts to be addressed, such as: In what ways is the Nigerian who is founding an AIC congregation near Houston a missionary too? How will Brazilians and Koreans be trained for cross-cultural ministry? The world is changing faster than missionaries can be retrained for service. And yet ethnographic tools are still crucial to missionary practice. This important work seeks to draw on recent developments in anthropology to bring valuable perspective and tools to bear on equipping missionaries for work amidst the rapid shifting and complex shaping of peoples by the forces of today's globalized world.

Review
'Rynkiewich has written an excellent accessible introduction for missionaries to postmodern anthropology. Soul, Self, and Society provides up-to-date perspectives and 'tools' for properly understanding the cultural/social phenomena of our complex and changing world today, such as migration, urbanization, globalization, and postcolonialism, and therefore enabling missionaries to proclaim, serve, and witness to God's Reign more appropriately and deeply within the heart of the human situation.'
-Roger Schroeder
Catholic Theological Union in Chicago

'This book is a worthy successor to texts by Nida, Luzbetak, Mayers, Hiebert, and Lingenfelter. Good writing, clear thinking, and cutting-edge engagement with contemporary concerns such as migration, diaspora, transnationalism, urbanization, and globalization set this volume apart from its predecessors. It deserves to become the standard textbook for introductory anthropology courses in Christian colleges and seminaries.'
-Jonathan Bonk
Overseas Ministries Study Center

'Anthropology has always played a critical role in missiological reflection. Yet, though the discipline of anthropology has changed, missiology often has not. In this important work, Michael Rynkiewich, a senior missiological anthropologist, calls for a much needed 'upgrade.' His mature reflection challenges traditional missiological thinking as he argues for a postmodern, postcolonial missiology that engages current anthropological theory. All who take mission and context seriously must grapple with the ideas in this book!'
-Christopher Flanders
Abilene Christian University

'In an irenic spirit, Rynkiewich chides anthropologists, missiologists, and missionaries for not adequately coming to grips with the enormous changes our world has undergone in the past fifty years. We therefore ignore at our peril these urbanizing and globalizing dynamics, and may by default promote a missiological practice or follow an anthropological theory that is no longer useful or even true in today's world. In a masterful way, Rynkiewich, drawing on his anthropological research and mission experience in the South Pacific, brings together anthropology and missiology and shows us how both can inform each other, and move us forward through the murky waters of our increasingly postmodern era.'
-Darrell Whiteman

Many Good Things Here
By Brian M. Howell
Michael Rynkiewich is one of the most insightful authors of missiological anthropology that many missiologists have never read. Until this book, Rynkiewich's writing was notably found in two extraordinarily good articles appearing Missiology in 2002 and 2003, in which he critiqued common anthropological models and theories employed in missiology. In 2011, he published another excellent article in Mission Studies, addressing the importance of postmodern anthropology for contemporary missiology. Knowing these articles, I had high expectations coming to his book. Although Soul, Self, and Society did not meet all my hopes, it provides a helpful introductory textbook and a useful resource addressing the intersection of missiology and anthropology.

The book covers most of the concepts expected of an introduction to cultural anthropology - e.g., kinship, politics, economics - and several often not covered, such as transnationalism and diaspora. Accounts of his missionary work in Papua New Guinea make this a valuable introductory book for prospective missionaries. There are a few striking omissions, such as any discussion of gender, and a few bits that seem tacked on (such as two paragraphs on "business as mission" and a 6 page final chapter on "The Anthropology of Christianity"), but overall the coverage is thorough.

As the author of an introductory anthropology textbook myself, I appreciated the practical help Rynkiewich provides those in mission work. Unfortunately, while he promises a "postmodern anthropology," he does not interact with contemporary theory much. The most prominent theorists typically associated with postmodern culture theory appear briefly, if at all, and receive no sustained attention. More striking was the absence of any reference to the work of Robert Priest, a missiologist who has written prominent pieces on postmodernity and anthropology. At several points it appeared that this text has been under construction for some time, and although published in 2011, already needs some updating. (E.g., on page 103, Rynkiewich refers to "recent work-time studies" published in 1974.)

There is a lot in this book the mission community would do well to absorb. Some may be frustrated that as Rynkiewich pulls missionary anthropology out of its orbit of 1960s functionalist anthropology, he also sidelines concepts such as "worldview" and "syncretism." Personally, I'm thrilled. These anthropologically marginal concepts have never, in my opinion, served to shed much light on cultural phenonmena, and their longevity in mission anthropology is a testament to the need for new books such as this. I agree with Rynkiewich that for missiology to maintain a vibrant conversation with anthropology, it must embrace contemporary theory where such concepts have little traction. Anyone studying anthropology for missionary purposes would do well to read this book.

Significant aspects of recent missionary anthropology in broad strokes
By Jay Hallowell
I am not an expert in the field, but I am glad that I read this book. I feel like it has helped me in a number of ways -- 1) catching up in broad strokes with some studies I have missed, and, 2) getting a very good introduction to perspectives on the anthropology of land use, the author's specialty. While the book was helpful to me, it left me oddly dissatisfied in two ways -- 1) it was broad, but in cross-cultural life and work I don't live with breadth, I live with specifics. The book did little to help me with the specifics, though, admittedly, that might be me; 2) It lacked depth, not least of all academically. Of course, the helpful footnotes and bibliography do point to where I can get more specifics and more depth. So, the book succeeds in significant ways as an introductory text describing significant themes from recent missionary anthropology in broad strokes.

Making Hispanics: How Activists, Bureaucrats, and Media Constructed a New American, by G. Cristina Mora

How did Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and Cubans become known as “Hispanics” and “Latinos” in the United States? How did several distinct cultures and nationalities become portrayed as one? Cristina Mora answers both these questions and details the scope of this phenomenon inMaking Hispanics. She uses an organizational lens and traces how activists, bureaucrats, and media executives in the 1970s and '80s created a new identity category—and by doing so, permanently changed the racial and political landscape of the nation.

Some argue that these cultures are fundamentally similar and that the Spanish language is a natural basis for a unified Hispanic identity. But Mora shows very clearly that the idea of ethnic grouping was historically constructed and institutionalized in the United States. During the 1960 census, reports classified Latin American immigrants as “white,” grouping them with European Americans. Not only was this decision controversial, but also Latino activists claimed that this classification hindered their ability to portray their constituents as underrepresented minorities. Therefore, they called for a separate classification: Hispanic. Once these populations could be quantified, businesses saw opportunities and the media responded. Spanish-language television began to expand its reach to serve the now large, and newly unified, Hispanic community with news and entertainment programming. Through archival research, oral histories, and interviews, Mora reveals the broad, national-level process that led to the emergence of Hispanicity in America.

Review
"Mora has written an excellent and scholarly contribution to our understanding of the origins of the concept of 'Hispanic' and 'Latino.' It is a nuanced study that eschews political correctness, whether of the Left or Right, and instead documents the politics of ethnic labeling and identity." (Mario T. Garca University of California, Santa Barbara)

“Today, Americans celebrate, describe, or worry about the growing Hispanic population. But if not for the actions of diverse individuals in the 1970s and 1980s, that population would probably be understood in other ways. Based on extensive archival research and interviews with these individuals, Mora deftly shows how similar-minded activists, business interests, and others worked to construct and institutionalize the new ethno-racial category known as Hispanic, which has since become a widely-accepted form of identification and classification.” (Edward Telles Princeton University)

“It is tempting to think of cultural change as something that just happens. Mora examines one of the most important cultural changes of our time – the embrace of Hispanic identity by millions of Americans who previously thought of themselves in terms of national origin, and the embedding of that self-understanding in the daily routine operations of organizations as diverse as ad agencies, political parties, TV stations, and census bureaus, and demonstrates the complex range of interacting actors and motives behind this transformation. Making Hispanics is not just a signal contribution to the study of ethnic and racial formation – it is a model and masterpiece of institutional analysis.” (Paul DiMaggio Princeton University)

"A compelling work of scholarship that is appealing to students of ethnic identity, sociology and organizational theory."
(Hayagreeva Rao Stanford Graduate School of Business)

“Howdida US population as nationally, ethnically, and socially diverse as today’s 55 million people of Latin American descent, come to be known as ‘Hispanics’ in the United States? In this well-written and thoroughlyresearched book, Mora carefully and successfully traces the history and combined efforts of activists, bureaucrats, and the mainstream media to construct this ‘ethnic group’—and to convince its members to identify asHispanics in the United States. Making Hispanicsis essential reading for anyone interested in thepopularization and acceptanceofpanethnicity as a significant force in US politics and society to this day.” (Suzanne Oboler John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York)

“Well researched. . . . Berkeley sociologist Mora’s archival research unearths the confluence of important organizations and US institutions that together created a new brand of Americans who are still on the cusp of being accepted as full members of the US community. . . . Recommended.” (Choice)

“A model and masterpiece. . . . No more is needed, except of course the exceptional talent of a Mora, to produce this (almost) perfect work of sociology . . . Mora's is an American story twice over, which should be heeded in a Europe that, to paraphrase LBJ, still prefers to ‘trash’ its immigrants.” (European Journal of Sociology)

Excellent Exploration of the Social Construction of Social Identity
By Pachin Marin
One of those aspects this work evidences is the malleability that social identities have and how they are shaped by powerful institutional forces to satisfy some basic economic, social and political needs. The strands that link together Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans show how conscious actors can influence how their own representation in the American national landscape is achieved. It highlights significant individuals, and organizations in their efforts through advocacy, research and activism which has led to the emergence of a group that is now perceived as a pivotal in our electoral process, in the future of our educational system and our economy. Ironically, then these social categories lead to social identities that are the encasement for the racialization of Latinos into pseudo racial ethnic groups.

Campaigns and Elections: Players and Processes, by Stephen K. Medvic

Stephen K. Medvic’s Campaigns and Elections addresses two distinct but related aspects of American electoral democracy―both the processes that constitute campaigns and elections and the players who are involved. In addition to this balanced coverage on process and actors, it also gives equal billing to both campaigns and elections, and to contests for both legislative and executive positions at the national and state and local level.

The book starts by providing students with the conceptual distinctions between what happens in an election and the campaigning that proceeds it. Significant attention is devoted to setting up the context for these campaigns and elections by covering the rules of the game in the American electoral system as well as aspects of election administration and the funding of elections. Then the book systematically covers the actors at every level―candidates and their organizations, parties, interest groups, the media, and voters―and the macro level aspects of campaigns such as campaign strategy and determinants of election outcomes. The book concludes with a big picture assessment of campaign ethics and implications of the "permanent campaign".

"Medvic’s book offers a comprehensive tour through the landscape of campaigns and elections. This book is your one-stop-shop for the most up-to-date, yet accessible, scholarship on American political campaigns and elections."
―Travis N. Ridout, Washington State University

"Stephen Medvic’s Campaigns and Elections: Players and Processes is the best comprehensive textbook on the topic. He invites students to learn about all aspects of both campaigns and elections, and provides thought-provoking narratives followed by focused discussion questions and role-play scenarios. Medvic lays out the theoretical and practical importance of elections in American democracy in the first chapter, and then reflects back on this information throughout the book with a regular examination of normative considerations. Medvic’s Campaigns and Elections is the book for courses on campaigns and elections."
―Diana Dwyre, California State University, Chico

"Stephen Medvic provides readers with a thorough account of the remarkable variety of laws and regulations that govern U.S. elections at the national and state levels. He also amply covers the various individuals, organizations, and institutions – including the candidates, consultants, political parties, interest groups, voters, and mass media – that shape and influence the electoral process. Students and others interested in learning about how American campaigns and elections operate will find everything they need to know in this comprehensive, yet very accessible book."

How and why some teams "shoot out the lights"...and most don't
By Robert Morris
Those who aspire to help create and then lead create teams that deliver high-impact results will find the material in this HBR book invaluable. It is one of the volumes in a series of anthologies of articles that first appeared in Harvard Business Review. Authors of the ten articles focus on one or more components of a process by which to boost team performance through mutual accountability, motivate large and diverse groups, increase team members' emotional intelligence, salvage an under-performing team, prevent or overcome decision deadlock, extract excellent results from "a bunch of touchy superstars," compete constructively senior-level colleagues, and ensure productivity of far-flung teams.

Having read all of the articles when they were published individually, I can personally attest to the brilliance of their authors' (or co-authors') insights and the eloquence with which they are expressed. Two substantial value-added benefits should also be noted: If all of the articles were purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be at least $60-75; they are now conveniently bound in a single volume for a fraction of that cost.

I now provide two brief excerpts that are representative of the high quality of all ten articles:

In "The Discipline of Teams," Jon Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith offer some practical suggestions that are relevant to almost any team (whatever its objectives) in almost any organization (whatever its size and nature may be). They suggest that a team's essential discipline comprises five characteristics:

1. A meaningful common purpose that the team has helped to shape.
2. Specific performance goals that flow from the common purpose.
3. A mix of complementary skills.
4. A strong commitment to how the work gets done.
5. Mutual as well as individual accountability.

They also discuss several different approaches that have worked well for many high-impact teams:

o Establish urgency, demanding performance standards, and clear direction.
o Select members for skill and skill potential, not personality.
o Pay particular attention to first meetings and actions because initial impressions always mean a great deal, for better or worse.
o Set crystal clear rules of behavior

In "The Tough Work of Turning Around a Team," former NFL head coach Bill Parcells offers this advice:

"If you want to get the most out of people, you have to apply pressure - that's the only thing that any of us really responds to. As a coach, I've always tried to turn up the heat under my people, to constantly push them to perform at a high level.

"Creating pressure in an organization requires creating confrontation, and it can get very intense, very emotional. I've seen coaches avoid confrontations with their players because they don't like conflict, and I assume the same thing is true among the leaders of business teams. But I've actually come to relish confrontation, not because it makes me feel powerful but because it provides an opportunity to get things straight with people. It's nit until you look people in the eye that you get to the sources of their behavior and motivation. Without confrontation, you're not going to change the way they think and act."

Other articles in this anthology I especially enjoyed include "Why Teams Don't Work" (Diane Coutu), `Building the Emotional Intelligence of Groups" (Vanessa Urch Druskay and Steven B. Wolff), and "How Management Teams Can Have a Good Fight" (Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Jean L. Kahwajy, and L.J. Bourgeois III).

Team Building
By Humski
I manage a team of financial analyst whose job is to review our business performance, develop new strategies and drive the implementation of those strategies across our business. I bought this book to help build a better team environment because many of the tasks they do are individualistic.

With that said, this booked helped give me new and different ideas on how to grow the team, both horizontally as well as vertically.

Like most of the self-help type books it gives you some new ideas, some new ways to look at things and most importantly really makes you think about how to apply them to your team. There is a lot more "art" than there is "science" when it comes to developing people and this gives you some new colors to use.

A weekly spiritual practice for developing a strong and open heart—drawn from Judaism's Mussar tradition

Mussar draws from the vast storehouse of Jewish wisdom, law, revelation, and text and brings it right home in a way that is completely practical. Judaism teaches that Torah (the collective wisdom of the tradition) provides the blueprint for human experience—and so the more of it we acquire, the more we gain a clearer, truer perspective on life and learn how to navigate its pathways. The phrase “acquiring Torah” is code for the process of internalizing this wisdom to bring about a genuine transformation of the inner self.

In short, accessible chapters, this book describes forty-eight methods through which we can acquire Torah—and turns them into a straightforward practice. These methods include cultivating humility, joy, awe, goodheartedness, closeness with friends, not taking credit for oneself, judging others favorably, and so on. The fruits of working through each quality or method are a refined soul and a strong and open heart.

48 Weekly Mussar Lessons
By William Carpenter
This is a collection of thoughtful and interesting weekly lessons on 48 principles of Mussar, a Jewish approach to improving yourself. Many of these lessons and exercises help you explore the topic in some depth, helping you to learn how to see more deeply into Jewish teachings.

Alan Morinis has written several books on Mussar. I think this is his best since his excellent first book Climbing Jacob's Ladder: One Man's Journey to Rediscover a Jewish Spiritual Tradition.

Excellent, simple, and compelling.
By gshaffer
Another wonderful book by the person who has introduced Mussar to a new generation and has revealed its powerful, transformative essence. The insights and practices described in this book can change your life in a lasting way, and while Mussar is a Jewish spiritual practice, it turns out that non-Jews as well as Jews have benefited enormously from its teachings, which Morinis continues to present in a clear, precise, and inspiring way. If you have ever found yourself perusing the Judaica, Religion, Self-Help, Psychology, or Spirituality sections of a bookstore, you probably have been looking for this book, So buy it and then buy another copy for anyone you deeply care about..
