Review
"Stern and Byrne have that go for the throat intensity that makes so many modern comic books seem flat and dull by comparison. Byrne's artwork leaps off of the page. The fluidity is reminiscent of Byrne's unparalleled run on The Uncanny X-Men, where there is never a dull moment or chance to catch your breath. If space aliens land on Earth and ask me 'what is a superhero comic book?', I will hand them this book." -- Kris Shaw, junkfoodforthought-krisshaw.blogspot.com

"Captain America was the first patriotic superhero to hit big with the public, and over the years a vast number of talented artists and writers have crafted his adventures. I'll leave you to compile your own top ten, but I'll wager that this all too brief run by Roger Stern, John Byrne and Joe Rubenstein will provide at least one of them. This volume ... seamlessly blends epic adventure with spectacular superhero art for a fan's delight that is also readily accessible to the newcomer or casual reader." -- Win Wiacek, comicsreview.co.uk

"I found a copy of Roger Stern and John Byrne's book and I must say that I read it with stars in my eyes. I instantly fell in love with this book. Having been so used to the dark spy-like feel that Brubaker's Cap is all about, it was a nice change of pace to look back at a much more hopeful and happier Steve Rogers. It's a fun read that really shows how much comics have changed over the decades. Add to that the fantastic art from John Byrne and you have one of the legendary runs of Cap that still holds up even today." -- Eric Godfrey, goodreads.com

"In just nine brief issues, Stern and Byrne did so much. They gave Captain America a new, young girlfriend with an effervescent personality and true character--Bernie Rosenthal. There are maybe only a handful of superhero girlfriends who have the depth and range of Bernie ... and this was in a book where a supporting cast had never, ever really mattered. They revived The Invaders, marrying Cap's past with his present. They told what is still considered by most to be the definitive "origin" retelling. And Cap (almost) ran for President!" -- Ethan Kalett

"Batroc the Leaper, Mister Hyde, and Baron Blood were all temporarily elevated to A-list status after Stern and Byrne were finished with them ... [but] the real highlight was Captain America #250, where Cap briefly contemplated a Presidential run. In an era where big business was running unregulated and actors were masquerading as politicians, this issue served as succinct commentary for the state of the country. It's the perfect blend of intelligence and fantasy." -- Jason Serafino

From the Author
"Captain America is both an idealist and a patriot ... a living symbol of the American Dream. He grew up in a era of economic upheaval and government corruption, in a time when political and religious demagogues used the airwaves to increase their personal power and wealth. When Cap came out of suspended animation and rejoined the world, things hadn't really changed that much. There were more people, and the demagogues were using television in addition to radio, but Cap had seen it all before. And despite the frustration of seeing how little people had changed, he didn't give in to cynicism. That toughness of character was -- is -- his greatest strength." -- Roger Stern

From the Inside Flap
Roger Stern is a veteran comic-book writer and former editor best known best known for his role in one of comics' most shocking events: the 1992 "Death of Superman" saga, which killed off the iconic character for a short time. His Marvel works include well-regarded runs on Dr. Strange and Amazing Spider-Man; in the latter title, he introduced the hell-raising Hobgoblin, the secret of whose identity spanned decades. In addition to a long tenure as Avengers writer, Stern helped launch West Coast Avengers; he has also written or co-written such related projects as Avengers #1 , Avengers Forever, Avengers Infinity, Avengers Two: Wonder Man and Beast and X-Men vs. Avengers.

John Byrne has worked continuously in the comic-book industry as both writer and artist since he debut in 1975. After initially collaborating with write Chris Claremont on Iron Fist, Byrne and Claremont moved on to X-Men for a run that is still regarded as one of the title's finest. Byrne followed his X-successes with an equally famed stint on Fantastic Four, earning comparisons to the original Lee/Kirby issues for his imaginative plotlines and dynamic artwork; he also spun Alpha Flight into its own title, beginning a sibling franchise to the X-Men. In 1986, he was selected to revamp DC's flagship hero, Superman, re-imagining the Man of Steel in a historic project heralded by a Time magazine cover. In the 21st century, Byrne continued his DC work with the launches of Blood of the Demon and Doom Patrol, along with a return to Superman in Action Comics.

Iconic Cap!
By Bucky
Stern+Byrne= Absolute Cap awesomeness. Together, these two creators- two of the best in the business- crafted an iconic Captain America run, that exemplified so many things that make Cap not only the greatest hero in the Marvel Universe, but in all of comicdom. A look through Roger Stern & John Byrne's huge back catalogue of comics work will tell you from the word go that you're going to get fantastic, character-driven storytelling and art. John Byrne's art- from X-Men to Avengers to Cap & the FF, shows his skill as both a defining artist and writer in the comic industry, and the same can be said for Roger Stern, whose credits include great runs on the Amazing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange(which I greatly enjoyed!). However, when these two teamed up on Cap, you got absolute magic, and you saw what a dynamic duo these guys were. They focused not only on what makes Cap a great hero- his courage, his humility, and his selflessness- but also focused on the man behind the shield and the star-spangled garb, underneath the symbol of liberty he was as Captain America- Steve Rogers. They gave a seldom-seen look at the life of Steve Rogers outside of his role as the Sentinel of Liberty, showing an everyman quality to him as he tries to make ends meet working as a freelance artist, and his friendships with normal people at his Brooklyn Heights apartment building. They deal with his aspect as a man out of time, but in a creative way- through the beginnings of his May-December romance with Bernie Rosenthal, perhaps the most "normal" of Cap's love interests, who is very much a product of the modern world, while Steve, despite his youthful appearance, is a member of the greatest generation. This is an aspect and look at the man behind the stars and stripes that I truly enjoy. However, this book is more than just great character moments, there's plenty of action for everyone, as through this run Cap battles against robot duplicates, the rampaging Dragon Man, the surprising team up of the diabolical Mr. Hyde and Batroc the Leaper, and Cap travelling to the UK to deal with the return of the Invaders' vampiric foe, Baron Blood. One of the highlights of the book is the final story, which is a retelling of Cap's origin which remains a definitive telling of how Steve Rogers became Captain America, a retelling that is faithful to the original with new details to make it contemporary as well. John Byrne even did his own pencil art and inking like they did in the 40s to add to the authenticity of the story, as well as the choice of President Roosevelt's narration. Cap's origins have been retold many times, but this remains my personal favorite. I also greatly enjoyed the aforementioned Baron Blood story, which had Cap revisiting the Falsworth family, Lord Falsworth & his daughter Jackie(formerly Union Jack & Spitfire of the Invaders), to face Baron Blood, with a bit of mystery that culminates in an awesome confrontation between Cap & Baron Blood(and what's cooler than Cap vs. a vampire Nazi?), with a conclusion that can't be missed, that leads to the introduction of a new Union Jack that has become a fan favorite character over the years. Stern and Byrne just hit on all cylinders with these stories, with excellent scripts and Byrne providing iconic images of Cap in action. His Cap even has a presence when he's just standing in a panel, so you can just imagine what happens when the action goes down, whether it's Cap dealing with something as simple as street-thugs or throwing down with superhuman foes like Mr. Hyde and Baron Blood. These two had just such a great understanding of Cap, producing an iconic run that continues to inspire Cap creators to this day. It's a shame their run wasn't longer; they had intended to do a story involving the Red Skull, another involving the return of Kirby creations Arnim Zola and the Swine, and rumors even had it they had plans for Bucky. One can only imagine what could have happened had circumstances been different and they were allowed to continue. Regardless, we will still have these awesome stories from the Stern & Byrne team, that stand the test of time and get better with each read. Highly recommended for any Cap fan, and for people just getting interested in comicdom's real American hero.

A must have collection for Cap readers!
By C. Yoshihara
If you like stories of Cap, then this is a great book for you. Roger Stern is a very good writer and this was John Byrne at the highlight of his career - right around his groundbreaking run on Uncanny X-Men. His shading and line work are terrific (compared to now where I just don't feel he is as good as he used to be). Good stories and good art for a good price. A must have for a Cap fan who doesn't already have these books in his / her collection!

Thank goodness for reprints.
By Nancy Nagler
At first I was a little disappointed that it was all reprints then I remembered that I had sold ALL of my older comics. It was a relief to get some of them back, hardbound and on heavier paper. And I love John Byrne's art.

A History of Civilizations, by Fernand Braudel

Written from a consciously anti-enthnocentric approach, this fascinating work is a survey of the civilizations of the modern world in terms of the broad sweep and continuities of history, rather than the "event-based" technique of most other texts.

From Library Journal
Braudel was the most prominent member of the Annales school of history in post-World War II France. This history, originally published in 1963 as part of curriculum reform for French secondary students, was eventually judged by French school teachers as too hard for their students and was withdrawn. More than half the book is devoted to the development of Western civilization, and despite the judgment of French school teachers, it is suitable for serious high school students along with undergraduate and public libraries.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
A leader of the Annales school, which reacted against the prominence of politics and personalities in historiography, Braudel wrote based on la longue dur{‚}ee, emphasizing the material basis of daily life--the routine workings of commerce as it changes over the long term. This outlook has gradually permeated the profession, and, as so often happens when a good idea proves unstoppable, its proponent takes a turn at textbook writing. This is the late Braudel's 1962 lesson for French university students on the origin of European, Islamic, Indian, Asian, and New World civilizations. As a text it wasn't widely adopted, perhaps because France was then in a political uproar, pitting its colonialists--heirs to the civilizing mission of the nineteenth century--against decolonizers. And the book bears that sign of its time: The colonial motif pops up everywhere, presented as a timeless feature of ways of life in collision. So it was at the Battle of Tours in 732, which stopped the Muslim juggernaut; and so it is now in the anti-Western sentiments in the Arab world. Whether the conflict split religion and religion, town and country, or liberty and right, the colonial view benefits from Braudel's phenomenal depth of knowledge and synthesizing agility, and his palpable curiosity enlivens the sometimes deadly textbook form. For serious history collections. Gilbert Taylor

The First and Still the Best Multidisciplinary World History
By Ralph White
When Fernand Braudel originally published this text in the sixties, he became a pariah at the Sorbonne. In retrospect that disapprobation was the kind of seal of approval that "banned in Boston" came to embody. Previous histories drilled deep into one facet of history. Braudel's was a pioneering effort in multidisciplinary historical analysis. It captures the historical flow that evolves civilizations, sacrificing only the detail outside the themes. Even subsequent to "A History of Civilizations," other historians have been unable to write a thematic survey that matches this original. And don't be tempted to skip the "soft" introductory chapters with titles like "The Study of Civilization Involves All the Social Sciences," and "The Continuity of Civilizations." These tee up the hard topics, like "The Greatness and Decline of Islam." There's method in Braudel's approach, and it takes patience. Braudel's translator, Richard Mayne had his job cut out for him. The complex syntax is that of a French intellectual of the sixties, and it is retained in Mayne's text, but you become accustomed to it. Don't look for maps or photographs in this Penguin Paperback; the text alone is six hundred pages. There's only one other book in this space, "From Dawn to Decadence," by Jacques Barzun. In my view they are complementary.

So so, but ....
By T
Braudel is considered one of the great 20th c. historians. He fought the French educational establishment to broaden the scope of history to include material from sociology, anthropology, geography, etc., and above all economics. This was in opposition to the traditional kings and battles approach, and this book was intended as a textbook (not accepted by the authorities). Arguably the movement's been quite fruitful, but this book is a very mixed bag - occasionally excellent, sometimes quite bad, and usually mediocre to good. It's also not a history of civilizations - it deals with what Braudel considered the great living civilizations - and rather than being history as usually understood, it describes primary characteristics of each with some development over time. Even the treatment of each "civilization" varies a great deal from one to the next, e.g. considerable space is devoted to the literature of Latin America while not to the others. The civilizations included are the Muslim World, Black Africa, the Far East (includes India), then Europe and European civilization elsewhere (to which he devotes half the book).

In spite of the many gaps, blind spots and weaknesses, there are some real high points and original insights. For example, Braudel points out that, while the Crusades are usually seen as unmitigated folly in the West, and while they achieved nothing lasting on land, at their beginning the Mediterranean was dominated by Islam while at their end it was dominated by the West. This had important consequences limiting Islamic power and culture while removing constraints from those of the West. He's probably at his best dealing with the West and Islam, and at his worst dealing with Latin America. To his credit he doesn't pass over Africa as so many do, but gives it reasonable attention, describing among other things the great trading societies which grew up as a result of contact with Islam. His take on the United States is fairly sane, with useful analyses of the evolution of American capitalism and of the centralization of power and growth of bureaucracy in the Executive branch of the Federal government. But the section on the US has its share of romanticisms and a couple chauvinisms (that statement probably applies to all societies outside Europe, and perhaps to European ones as well). His take on the Soviet Union is balanced to slightly sympathetic, although it's odd that we never hear of the millions killed by Stalin (or Mao).

Braudel's rejection of traditional historical narrative, with its landmarks and mileposts, sometimes leaves you wondering what, where and when it is that he's talking about. More importantly, he has a great weakness for making overarching generalizations, usually devoid of rational arguments stocked with facts which might lead us to share his conclusions. It's often transparently obvious that these generalizations can neither explain the entire phenomenon they purport to explain, nor can the explanation be so simple. After a few of these you start to question Braudel's judgment. He also spends a fair amount of time contemplating then-contemporary problems and speculating about the future. He defends this, but his performance is unconvincing, particularly in light of events since he wrote (1962). All the same, for someone who doesn't expect this book to be comprehensive or even, and who reads it along with world histories which are, it's still worth reading for its strengths and for the not-infrequent original insights.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4--Although the Pony Express operated for only 18 months, the courage and daring of the young men who made these trips, battling severe weather, treacherous terrain, and hostile Indians, have become legendary. Fuchs has drawn on numerous historical accounts to create a fictionalized story of such a run. Readers follow young Johnny Free and his faithful pony, JennySoo, as they ride "like the wind," are watched by wolves, find their relief station burned to the ground, and are eventually attacked by hostile Paiutes. In a minor stretch of credulity, JennySoo returns to rescue her wounded master. The nicely paced, tightly written text captures the excitement and drama of the situation. The full-page, textured paintings carry the action forward, while their misty quality suggests a time gone by. An opening storyteller's note provides necessary background and an informative afterword provides more details about the Pony Express. This is a good introduction to the subject for youngsters not quite ready for Steven Kroll's longer and strictly factual Pony Express! (Scholastic, 2000). --Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

Join Pony Express rider Johnny Free and his pony JennySoo as they deliver the mail. This picture book tells the story of a nights ride where Johnny and JennySoo meet up with seven Paiute warriors. Read this book to find out how they escape them.
The oil paintings in the book were really pretty. I like the story. It kept the readers attention and kept you wondering what was going to happen nest.
We recommend this book to for adult and children to share together to learn more about the Pony Express. It's a great history lesson. The story it's self is fiction but on the last page the author gives us some background on the real Pony Express.

Great for learning how to actually use the math behind GR
By A. Cox
This book is great for teaching the math behind GR using excellent examples from Math and Physics problems (for another great problem solver see also Schaum's Outline of Tensor Calculus, but this has less Physics). It is a bit long winded, spending alot of time on SR and in some place just over the top (for Physicists!), but once through it there should be no problem going to the more advanced texts which deal with more of the uses of GR. At the same level I would also recommend Schutz's First Course in GR, however, Callahan's book goes through and explains the use of the math better, whereas Schutz's is better for uses in GR, surprisingly this is the strength of Callahan's book: you can't really do the Physics properly unless you can do the math! After this it's on to more Physics orientated books like Carroll's excellent Introduction to GR, as a stepping stone to MTW's Gravitation and Wald's GR.

Beautiful Book
By Charles Davis
After long reflection, I am convinced that this book is the most finely crafted piece of teaching I have ever encountered. If you have hard interest in relativity, spacetime, cosmology, but lack facility with mathematics more advanced than calculus and linear algebra, Callahan will lead you into a deeper understanding of the mathematics than you would have believed possible.

One of the best.
By A Customer
This is one of the best introduction to General Relativity. It is the most accessible introduction to differential geometry. Naturally you have to know calculus, linear algebra, and the basics of special relativity. I bought many books on the subject, and this one belengs to the set I suggest for self-learning.

Be a voyeur to a connoisseur of life!
By Elliot
Aside from learning a great deal about sexual positions and how to live and enjoy life, Steven Yang shares with his readers lots of true to life nuances like the physical build and temperament of the women he encountered in Thailand, Cambodia and The Philippines. In true artist's fashion he elaborates on the minute details of his experiences, teaching us how to be cognizant of life in all its facets. He also teaches a great deal about Southern Asian society and their women in particular. He shows an uncanny ability to quickly read a personality, something few of us men are adept at.
Steven's writing style allows one to vicariously share his voracious appetite for life. By generously allowing his readers access to some of his intimate thoughts, he shares experiences with us that we would ordinarily never have.
Overall I really enjoyed his writing style. Some of his material is peppered with humorous and poignant remarks, like when he comments about some young US solders who visited an area with seasoned working girls "they looked like they had just fallen off a cabbage truck". Many lines throughout the book are worthy of being emblazoned in bronze.
As a person, Mr. Yang seems quite the sophisticate. He has clearly been around the block many times and I'm astounded at his scope and wide grasp of many subjects.... Most importantly, he knows himself well.

I presume his portrayals were of actual events (they seem real enough) and this gives the added dimension of a guide that others can follow should they choose to. In fact he teaches throughout the book, from tidbits of Thai language to locations and much more. A virtual treasure trove of information!

At times interesting, but never erotic
By Zarock
I bought this book after it was included in a search for men's erotica here on Amazon (of which there seems to be a lack of for straight guys).

The book started off well and it was really interesting learning about the bars and what goes on over there as well as the people he meets and the places he goes.

After that the book gets repetitive with the author getting up, finding a girl, bringing her back to his hotel, doing her, him going to sleep, and then doing it all again the next day. Many times the sex scenes were not that descriptive and sometimes very short - I suspect because the author has done so many girls it is nothing special to him anymore.

Finally when he goes to Cambodia it gets interesting again for a little while because he describes the places that he goes and the people he meets, then it gets in to that "Ground Hog Day-ness" with him just getting a girl, shagging her, and then doing it all again the next day.

After Cambodia he goes back to Thailand where more of the same happens until near the end of the book where he starts describing just going to the beach meeting groups of girls, talking with, and having parties with them.

Note that the author never travels to the Philippines, he has a paid for girlfriend over there and whenever he got a crappy coc sucking he would mention her and how well she did it.

While sometimes interesting I did not find this book erotic at all; it does not contain any elements needed for eroticism, there is no longing, no sexual tension, no naughtyness - it's all paid for and far too easy. If you are easily turned on then this book might do it for you, but I found myself far more turned on by the descriptions of nakedness and sex in books by the likes of Wilbur Smith.

I actually stopped reading this book twice, because there is no real plot you can quite easily do this - there is nothing to make you read "just one more chapter" before you go to sleep, which for some people might be a good thing.

Printing and binding was all good.

Attention craft brewers: Read and implement!
By Suzanne B.
Great book that needed to be written! Hopefully it will be read and followed by many craft breweries (and other craft beverage and food producers), as it will take the quality of their production processes and final products to the consistent (!) and reliable quality levels that consumers deserve (and will expect in the future)!

My only complaint (took off one star for that) is the price: $95 (cover price and online price from a national association) is hopelessly overpriced. I bought new from Amazon for significantly less, but thought even that price was still high.

I was hoping to see more test methods/ procedures. This book is more just about how to manage a quality program.

but I believe it is a great summary and guide for professionals
By Jason Dahl
Disclaimer: I am a homebrewer who happens to have an interest in lab science etc and am helping out my brother who works for a real brewery spin up a QA/QC program. This book was of little value to the average homebrewer, but I believe it is a great summary and guide for professionals. Gives great plans and examples for breweries looking to step up their QC game.
