A landmark effort

As a person who has read scores of books about spirituality and metaphysics, this is the most influential and refreshing I've read in 20 years. "Care of the Soul" is a beautifully written book about simple living and high thinking. The quality thoughts expressed in this book are worthy of being re-read throughout one's life. Thomas Moore has made a stark departure from the metaphysical and New Age movement with a book that is, quite simply, a guide for soulful living. Moore doesn't talk about karma, reincarnation, salvation, gurus or higher plains of consciousness. He doesn't become entangle with his own ego nor does he reiterate the conventional wisdom so many books of this genre parrot. On the contrary, this book challenges convention at every turn. "Care of the Soul" is about the here and now, the importance of mythology, ritual, imagination and beauty. It's about finding ritual and sacredness in our everyday routines. It deals with subjects ranging from family relationships, jealousy and earning a living to depression, aging and dying. Yet, Moore doesn't offer trite or handy answers or techniques for solving problems or smoothing the human experience. The human experience, with all its agonies, is not something to be circumvented, in Moore's view. And it's not something subject to overnight transformation. Rather, the human experience is a process to be embraced and made whole. I thoroughly disagree with an earlier review that called this a "simple" book best read by people 18 to 28 years old. Very few people of that age bracket would have the frame of reference or wisdom necessary to fully mine and understand the concepts and imagery Moore deals with. Buy this book and read it. You will cherish it and pass it along to the people you care about.

Read it and make up your own mind

I agree wholeheartedly with Thomas Moore's assertion that "loss of soul" is a major problem facing us today. People who are cut off from soulful family and friendship may find themselves in a cultural void, a barren world where problems are solved with pills and the media replaces real community. We have lost ourselves in the chaotic din and senseless rush. We are more sophisticated than ever, yet we remain unsatisfied. Do we know what will really satisfy us? Can we be still and take an honest look at ourselves? Are we making the best use of the one short life that has been given us?
If you recognise these questions, then 'Care of the Soul' might help you begin to answer them. Moore has a sense of the sanctity of human life, he urges us to see each life as precious and has respect for what each individual presents, however unpleasant it may seem. Every story and pathology is meaningful and can reveal truths about not just the individual but also about their family and society. When I first read the book I was most impressed by the chapter on narcissism, which remains the most authoratative account of self-love I have read. We are used to hearing that we must love ourselves before we can truly love another, but do we really know how? Moore correctly interprets the story of Narcissus not simply as an example of the symptom of narcissism, which is how it is often misinterpreted, but as the myth of true self-love, and he tells it with the insight you might expect from a therapist. This alone was a revelation and changed my life. I wonder if when Narcissus recognises himself he is experiencing the well~known 'Thou Art That' of Indian philosophy.Other key themes such as jealousy, power and depression are explored also.
A previous reviewer wrote that Moore thinks we should not change. I think this is a misrepresentation. Change is an inevitable part of life and cannot be avoided. But the feeling that we need to be someone different is a rejection of ourselves. I think we have to accept our past before we can be free of it, then change occurs naturally, out of stillness and reflection. Other reviewers have discussed what age range this is suitable for, Moore himself says that it is never too early or too late to begin caring for the soul. I read it in my early twenties and wish I had read it sooner, I know people who are much older and would still benefit from it`s message.
This book is the best introduction to spiritual life I have read and I feel grateful for it almost every day.

A Light in the Universal Darkness

In a time when the communications in writing and on the radio and television waves all appear to be proclaiming Armageddon, when crime is mounting not only in the terrorist activities throughout the globe but also on our hometown sidewalks, streets, neighborhoods and schools, and when lasting relationships and friendships seem to be taking on the semblance of extinction - in these perilous and sad times Thomas Moore's CARE OF THE SOUL glows with particular meaning. In this wondrously simple book Moore reacquaints us with the self and the sacredness of our individual being (or soul). He encourages us to be introspective, find the core of our being, honor the beauty of our uniqueness, love our human frailty, and in doing so we can grow to be a whole person, capable of loving our self and extending that love to all of mankind. Does that sound banal in the year 2002? Well, perhaps that is our universal failing. Would that we could broadcast this book's message in place of all the media blitz of war and death and terror and gloom! And perhaps if we individually read and absorb Moore's thoughtful teachings then the sharing of this new self respect could alter the course of current events. A beautifully written, incredibly valuable book, and a worthy gift to ones you love!

The roles of personality characteristics and self-concept are addressed through research conducted in school settings. Early interventions throughout the preschool and elementary school levels are reviewed with examples of school-based programs that have withstood rigorous evaluations. Systemic prevention programs are critiqued for effectiveness and limitations, and suggestions for improvement are made. Great basics!

I'm a girl. I say this only to illustrate the fact that, although my Dad and stepbrother restore cars, my stepdad was a Cadillac mechanic and my brother went to WyoTech, I was not taught anything other than how to jump a vehicle and change a tire.

This book starts with the very basics. How awesome! This may be tiresome for some readers, but it really helped me to understand what an engine does and how all the parts actually worked together. It is Fundamentals, after all.

I have been supplementing the text with websites and actual questions and demonstrations from the men in my life, and I am getting a pretty good grip on things. Now I can check all my fluids, change my own oil and filter, and know how to bleed the brakes. My 454 threw a rod, so we replaced it with a 350, and I learned about automatic vs manual transmissions, and engine 'anatomy.' This book helped my feel not quite so much like a dummkopf in the garage!

A great read for anyone who wants to learn about cars!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I started this book not knowing much about cars and ended with a vast amount of knowledge. The book goes through basically every system under the hood of a car. It starts of extremely basic and works upwards in complexity as the book and chapters progress.

Before reading this book it would be helpful to have the following:
1. Knowledge of Physics, most importantly electricity and magnitism. There are a number of different applications inside a car that make use of solenoids, magnetic fields, inductance, AC/DC current, and many more concepts in this field. Knowledge and understanding of circuit diagrams also would help into understanding how things work.

2. Principles of hydraulic systems.

Thats basically it, being a Physics student I had these at my disposal so it wasn't too bad for me. The book DOES have explanations of all of these concepts, but it still would make understanding easier if you had the knowledge prior.

Here are the pros and cons of this book:

PROS:
-Starts concepts off in a very basic manner but progresses into complexity. This helps satisfy people who may just be learning, and people who want to know the hardcore details of things.

-VERY informative. There is so much information in this book that it is pretty much assured you will finish with a thorough understanding of the way cars work and run. It will most definitely help you diagnose complicated problems that you might be having with your car.

-The end of each chapter provides questions and key words that are essential for understanding.

CONS:
-Many times in this book, it will refer to a system in a car that it has not yet been defined. For example, it may reference the differential in a suspension system, yet it has not said what a differential is. It would probably help (it did for me at least) to know a SMALL amount of information about each system in the car before you read this book. Articles on "ehow.com" are excellent in providing a good amount of information in a short concise article.

-There are no answers to the questions at the end of each chapter. I guess there is a teachers edition or something out there, but the book I had had no answers for the questions. Which means you really do not know if you are right or not when you answer the questions.

-The information on Anti-Lock breaks was extremely lacking. I found it strange that every other chapter of the book went into great detail except for on Anti-Lock breaks.

Thats really all there is to say. I fully enjoyed this book. It has an incredible amount of information and you will definitely finish with an extensive knowledge about cars. VERY VERY please with this purchase! :D

Great first text

I teach and intro to auto technology class to liberal arts college students. I tried a few different books including the "Auto Repair for Dummies." That one was, well, for dummies. I mean, genuine, honest-to-goodness dummies. This is a book that explains the important concepts in a way that a non-technical person can understand. If you want to understand the basics of what is happening inside your car, this book is a great place to start. The illustrations are well-done, the information is presented in a logical manner and it is relatively up-to-date.

RIVETING; A GREAT READ!

Employing an energetically enticing writing style, Brown has pulled-off a seemingly impossible feat in universalizing what might have been just a single interest niche book. Brown's thriller, Created Equal, landed solidly in my short list of non-stop-read books; the few and far between ones that keep me riveted to the page and anxious to get on to the next chapter. I absolutely loved it. The only regret that I had in perusing this instantly gripping novel was that it wasn't one hundred pages longer! Brown's pacing was superb. I rank Created Equal with the best of Len Deighton, John LeCarr�, and Dan Brown. Wherever you read, beach, bed, plane, or porch; Created Equal will provide fast-moving entertainment and a relaxing read. I highly recommend it, and hope that Brown has already started to write his next book!

A Very Timely Topic

Literature should exposed the reader to ideas and moral questions. In a griping fashion the author cogently presents the theological and legal cases for women within the Roman Catholic clergy. Before reading this novel, I had no idea there could even be an argument. But the author presents the arguments -- pro and con -- in an entertaining way. I never would have read an essay on the subject, but this book I couldn't put down.

Extremely accessible treatment of Long-range dependence

The author has prepared an extremely accessible treatment for the time series analysis of long-range dependent processes. The book can serve as a wonderful introduction to the topic for novices, as well as a valuable desktop reference for practitioners.

The author does a very good job of keeping the prerequisites from mathematics and statistics to the bare minimum. On the mathematics side, you'll need to solid understanding of undergraduate calculus, including infinite series and sequences. I recommend Apostle's two volume set Calculus, Vol. 1 and Calculus, Vol. 2 . Elementary probability and statistics are required, and Rao s Linear Statistical Inference and Its Application is a nice introduction. Finally, you'll need some exposure to the ARIMA analysis of time series. Try Brockwell & Davis Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting.

In the first chapter, Beran provides a wonderfully intuitive introduction in which he asks the reader to consider what happens to time-honored statistical techniques for estimating mean & variance by sample mean and sample variance in the case the usually IID (independent, identically distributed) assumption is no longer valid. This leads quite naturally into a discussion of the autocorrelation function for stationary processes, which is at the core of the investigation. The chapter concludes with a number of real-world examples of long-range dependent time series. Note that the author uses the term "long-memory" to be synonymous with long-range dependence. This is not necessarily a widely adopted practice, so take care when reading other authors. The Nile river data set is introduced at the end of the chapter, and this data will be referenced repeatedly throughout the remainder of the book.

Chapter 2 introduces the formal definition of long-range dependence in terms of the rate of decay of the autocorrelation function of a stationary time series (or equivalently via asymptotic properties of the spectral density function). Next, self-similar processes are introduced, with the most well-known of these being fractional Brownian motion. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the fractional ARIMA model, which is emphasized in the remainder of the text.

Chapter 3 is a short chapter which records the limit theorems needed for the asymptotic distribution of maximum likelihood estimators found later in the text. The results are stated and motivated, and the author provides copious literature references if the reader is interested in tracking down the mathematical proofs of these results.

Chapter 4 begins study of statistical inference for long-range dependent processes, and this starts with the Hurst R/S statistic. This discussion is reinforced with the use of the Nile river data, together with chart plots for a number of sample statistics.

Maximum likelihood estimation of the Hurst parameter H in fractional ARIMA models begins in Chapter 5 with a focus on time-domain techniques, although analysis of spectral density plays an important role. The exact Gaussian MLE and Whittle's approximate MLE are introduced and asymptotic normality of the estimators is established via use of the limit theorems of Chapter 3.

The emphasis shifts to spectral density and frequency domain in chapter 6 by considering techniques based on periodogram analysis. The fractional EXP model is introduced and considered as an alternative to the fARIMA model studied so far.

Up to this point, the main object of study has been stationary Gaussian processes. Chapter 7 provides a glimpse of some techniques used to non-stationary processes, or non-Gaussian stationary processes. This is an active area of research and the treatment here is provided to give the reader an appreciation of these issues, rather than a comprehensive review of the state-the-art.

Chapter 8 is principally concerned with estimating the mean and standard deviation for non-centered processes, as well the problem of predicting future mean values.

The question of performing linear regression on dependent variable with long-range dependent explanatory variables and long-range dependent innovations is discussed in Chapter 9. This is a must read chapter for econometricians and anyone working with economic time series data.

The next two chapters are brief, and touch on topics such as goodness-of-fit tests, simulation and fractional GARMA processes. In the final chapter, the author includes SPLUS programs along with data sets (including the Nile River data).

A layman's guide to the economic issues of today.

"Economic Issues Today" is the layman's guide to the big economic issues affecting American society in our time. The book covers a wide range of issues from consumer welfare and income distribution to big business and international economics. For each topic (and there are 14 topics altogether) the conservative, liberal and radical views are presented. Given the number of topics there is only limited discussion on each.
Carson, Thomas and Hecht have tried to present the basic arguments of each side, while reserving judgment on what they think is the `right' view. They admit that they were tempted to do this, but decided that the reader should be the final judge as to the merits of each argument. Because of this, the essays read as a debate between three economists, each from a different school of thought, but without the jargon usually involved in such debates. On some issues, one side clearly shines but on others there did not seem to be a winner to me. The only caveat here is not to take the representative views here as that actually held by the sides in real life. The arguments employed by actual conservatives , liberals and radicals are obviously much more thorough and realistic. The essays at time make it seem that some of the sides have very simplistic and unrealistic views on life, and the reader may be tempted to believe it especially if it confirms their prior biases. The authors have written a short bibliography for those readers interested in finding out more about the differing views. The bibliography is short, but it lists the major figures that have had a large influence on their respective schools of thought.
Carson et al. have done an excellent job by not letting their biases show when relating the three different paradigms, I would highly recommend this book to undergraduates in economics or politics or to any general reader who wants to find out more about the economic arguments employed by conservatives, liberals and radicals when they talk about the economic issues of today.
