About the Author
L. Thomas Winfree, Jr., received his Ph.D. degree (sociology) from the University of Montana in 1976. Besides his current position as Professor of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University, he has held academic appointments at the University of New Mexico, East Texas State University (now Texas A and M University, Commerce), and Louisiana State University. Winfree has authored or co-authored over 70 refereed journal articles, 20-plus book chapters, and numerous reports. He is co-author, with Howard Abadinsky, of UNDERSTANDING CRIME, Second Edition (Wadsworth, 2003). Included among Winfree's research interests are youth gangs, police socialization, and contemporary justice system responses to drug and alcohol problems.

Howard Abadinsky is professor of criminal justice at St John's University. He served eight years as an inspector for the Cook County, Illinois, sheriff and 15 years as a New York state parole officer and senior parole officer. The founder of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime, he also served as a consultant to the President's Commission on Organized Crime. He holds a B.A. from Queens College of the City University of New York, an M.S.W. from Fordham University, and a Ph.D. in sociology from New York University.

Great for Renting!!

I am in Grad School for Criminal Justice and I just found this a much better way rather than to buy a book from my school bookstore. Even if I thought about buying from the bookstore I wouldn't get much back when class is over, so Amazon is helping me get great grades and save money!! I will always look here for renting my books first :)

This is a really great book. I am an English teacher/librarian with no real experience coaching debate, but this really got me on the right track. I would recommend it for debaters and coaches, and I think there is something in here even for experienced debaters. Other reviewers have mentioned that the research section was a bit dated, but this book was easily worth it's weight in gold to someone like me, even if you tear those pages out. I think even public forum debaters who have so much less technical stuff to deal with would benefit from reading the chapters on Policy debate so they can understand the pedigree of Public Forum, how the "stock issues" work, etc.

Great Resource Book for Students

I advise the student-led debate club at our community college. Though I believe the guide was written primarily for high school debate coaches, I bought copies for the officers of our debate club after first reading it myself. The guide is straight-forward and has a lot of clear explanations and examples that can be applied immediately. Though I have to buy copies of this guide out of my own pocket since we don't have a budget for them in my department, I will be purchasing them again this year for my students - I think it is a good investment.

This book really gives you a basic understanding of debate fundamentals. I've even used this book as a guide in my debate rounds! It is a somewhat outdated book, regarding common debate terms, but still applies in modern competitive debate. The quality of the book, however, was lower than what I expected. Highlighter and worn pages were frequent throughout the book.

Truly a Journey into the Deaf World

I bought this book for my Deaf Culture class and I am very glad that this was required reading. Although I have been taking ASL classes for 10 years and have been involved in the Deaf community I still found this book to be very eyeopening.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is well written with good flow and gives insight to the Deaf perspective.

No Passport Required

This book is the only passport you will need to travel to the heretofore not-very-well-if-ever-at-all understood Deaf-World. Well written, "Journey into the Deaf-World" is quite exhaustive in its coverage of the the life and times of Deaf people in America. From culture to education and everywhere in between, "Journey" is as much enlightening as it is enraging. You will find yourself newly aware of sad injustices and lack of understanding the confront the the Deaf community at every turn.

While not always an easy read, one must give credit to the authors for making what could have been a cumbersome text into a scholarly-yet-accessible book. Especially enjoyable are the examples of real-life situations that Deaf people encounter. For instance, when the sections on education are covered, "Journey" examines the different methods of attack used by various educational professionals over the years, effectively giving a well-rounded picture of the educational scene from the Deaf perspective. But when it gives a series of mock narratives of the typical experience of a Deaf child in each of these methods of teaching, the reader is able to experience what can only be described as true enlightenment.

Don't be intimidated by the book's thickness. If you have any tie to the Deaf-World,or even just a passing interest, "Journey" will take you for a fast-paced ride you'll not soon forget.

A terrific book!

This is a lively book written by an author who is a renowned expert in Latin American religion with two previous excellent titles to his credit. He goes inside and takes the reader inside the world of those who resort to this popular but clearly marginal cult and its devotions. As in his previous works, the author approaches the world of the marginalized with careful empathy and scholarly objectivity. All who care about the increasingly precarious position of organized Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, would benefit from the increased understanding this book offers as to why those who are spiritually hungry, even desperate, increasingly venture outside the bounds of socially acceptable, traditional beliefs and rituals.

This was a fascinating read about the origins, cultural context and contemporary resurgence of this intriguing saint. The writing style is very accessible,sources are well documented and personal anecdotes add a human dimension to the research. This is not a how to of Santa Muerte ritual although examples of prayers and offerings are given, but a balanced analysis of the current positioning of the Bony Lady in Mexico and the USA. The Lady's followers and enemies and the reasons for their stances are both critically explored. I first discovered Santa Muerte on a fictional TV show and was astonished at the depth of meaning and rapid development of the Lady's appeal that Chesnut reveals. She's definitely not the one dimensional Hollywood bogey man that I first encountered, but a far more complex being who fills the political and spiritual gaps of official neglect. If you have the slightest interest in religion, politics, sociology or anthropology you will find this a real page turner. If I have a single criticism, and its a very minor one, it would be the repetitive nature of the conclusion but that's probably only because Chesnut writes with such clarity that his prose is totally memorable and absorbing. Oh , and the kindle version photos show up as black and white even on my kindle fire which is disappointing, since colour is very important in this work.

This book is to die for! In a very engaging style Chesnut reveals the reasons for Santa Muerte's mushrooming popularity.I had heard of Santa Muerte in Mexico but always thought she was an evil saint only for narcos and other criminals. After reading the book I now have a good understanding of why her appeal is so broad.

useful textbook ever!

I am a GSU student, and having introduction to corporate finance class this semester. I was doubtful when the professor told us we would change the original textbook to A novel Introduction to Corporate Finance. Because this is not a traditional textbook--chapter by chapter explaining the finance concepts, this book introduced the concepts through a story. I am not a finance major so the plain explanations of finance concepts are difficult to understand. However, when I started reading this book, I easily picked up the basic concepts of finance. I enjoy learning new complicated concepts by reading a story. If you would like to learn finance in a easier way, this book is a good option.

Very helpful text

I was a student of Dr. Godbey's in a basic finance class. We used this textbook. I found it to be extremely helpful. The story helps introduce some of the concepts and gets right to the lesson in each chapter. One character is teaching another in the text, so its as if the person, or student, is reading about another student learning the same material. At the end of each chapter are questions that vary slightly so the person reading can better understand how the inputs and outputs vary. For example, when learning bonds it can be difficult to grasp exactly what happens when interest rises or if the price is above par value. The book presents questions that are stepwise and do not jump from one set of numbers to another, so the reader is slowly walked through the question.

Really Does Assume No Prior Knowledge!

Always and forever on the lookout for biochemistry books for the allied professional that actually teach instead of confusing the student, I came upon this little Gem from "Down Under" (Australia). Since it is a Kindle book, I had immediate access to it, and I have to say that this book is very nicely done. As the Editorial review and my Title claim, this book really does assume no prior knowledge of Biochemistry, or even Anatomy and Physiology.

Unlike most Biochemistry books out there that are huge and crammed with thousands of details for medical students, this book is specifically geared toward teaching the introductory basics to the Allied Health Student. And it does a nice job of it too.

Along with "Biochemistry for Nurses" by Raju (ISBN-10: 8180613569), "Biochemistry Explained: A Practical Guide to Learning Biochemistry " by Thomas Millar, (ISBN-10: 041529942X), and "The Chemistry of LIfe" by Steven Rose and Radmila Mileusnic (ISBN-10: 0140272739), These 4 books so far round out my Basics-of-Biochemistry Library.
