If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Sixteen-year-old Sam spends her summers training at the private club pool, working to earn the county title and a college scholarship. Her school-year counterpart, Samantha, is tied to a toxic group of popular besties-for-life, trying to keep her Purely Obsessional OCD a secret. Running with a crowd who takes hostile notice of every social misstep, every misapplied bit of makeup, and any move that is less than normal, keeping her diagnosis a secret is not easy. Out of the blue, Samantha meets Caroline, who introduces her to a secret society called the Poet's Corner. Slowly, Samantha begins to discover how she can remain Sam and be true to herself outside of summer and the pool, and even trust the cute musician AJ enough to fall in love with him. Just when Sam begins to feel confident in herself, the very thing that helped her feel normal is what ultimately makes her question her sanity. Approached in a very respectful and informative manner, this story of coming to terms with a difficult diagnoses and being less-than-normal is in no way didactic. While the beginning is slow and requires some suspension of disbelief, the climax and resolution are resounding enough to rise above any shadows of doubt. VERDICT While the story's romance falls almost too easily into place, this title will do well in libraries where Sarah Dessen and Stephanie Perkins are in high demand.—Brittany Staszak, St. Charles Public Library, IL

Summary (from Goodreads):

If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.

What I Liked:

I'm actually surprised by how much I liked this one. I didn't really know what to expect. I've never read any of this author's books, and I actually never read the synopsis of this book before reading it. I got it from the publisher and decided to read it on a whim, because a bookseller I follow read it insanely early and could not stop raving about it! So I figured the awesome package from Disney-Hyperion and BHM was a sign - read this book!

Sam was diagnosed with OCD - specifically, Pure-Obsessive OCD. She takes medication to help her focus her thoughts and to sleep, she sees a psychiatrist once a week, she's trying to be normal, day by day. None of her friends know about her condition, and Sam has always struggled with this. One day, she meets a really nice girl named Caroline, who introduces her to the Poets Corner, a secret meeting of a group of student who write and share poetry and songs. Sam joins them and begins to channel her tornado thoughts into her poetry, swimming, and a cute boy in the Poets Corner. She's doing better than she has been in years... until a realization threatens to bring everything crashing down.

This is a tough-issue contemporary novel, one that theoretically, I should never have picked up. I really do NOT like tough-issue contemporary novels. YA contemporary in general, I'm not a fan. But tough-issue contemporary novels? I tend to run in the other direction. Sprint, really. But this book was different. It wasn't entirely woe-is-me, angst, whining and complaining. Not saying every tough-issue contemporary novel is like that, or that that is my only probably with tough-issue contemporary novels. But often, the protagonist of a tough-issue contemporary novel is very selfish and annoying in her complaining and angst, and I hate it.

Sam is different. I couldn't entirely relate to her (we all say we have "OCD" but that is not the case at all), but I could empathize. I could clearly see what was going through Sam's head, how she was thinking, what she was thinking, how it was affecting her mentally, physically, emotionally. I really liked Sam, from start to finish. I have a poor history with protagonists with mental illnesses/conditions (probably because I avoid books with these conditions/illnesses like the plague - they make me entirely too heartbroken or sad).

I love the progression of Sam's character. This is the most important part of the book, and Stone really nails the characterization as well as the progression of Sam's condition and how she is dealing with OCD. Sam goes from being a girl who is scared of people knowing about her condition, to a girl who learns to own it and be who she is, surrounding herself with people who know about her condition and support her.

I think Stone really did her research and represented OCD extremely well. I don't have OCD nor do I know much specifically about the illness, but it's obvious that Stone has done her research. It's obvious that Stone knows what she is talking about. There is minutiae that is so incredibly important to this story, small details that make it all the more genuine and authentic.

There is romance in this book! I was a bit surprised by how important the romance ended up being. It doesn't really take root until about midway through the book, but that was perfect, in my opinion! I like how Sam and AJ already had history (not romantic history), and Sam had to remember how she knew him. I like how they had to work to become friends, and then they became more than friends. Their relationship is beautiful and simple, yet intricate and complex. I loved watching them fall for each other! AJ is a great guy, and I couldn't see anyone else for Sam.

There are other relationships in this book that are explored - friendships, I mean. Sam makes a new friend, Caroline. Caroline pushes Sam to find the Poets Corner, and pretty soon, Sam has new friends that accept her with little question. Sam's current friend group are the popular girls, the ones that everyone looks toward. They're nice, but some of them are Mean-Girls-esque. It's interesting to see Sam balance both groups of friends.

The twist coming up towards the climax is INTENSE. Seriously, I had chills. Well done, Stone. I had no idea! I had some idea that something wasn't right - but I had no idea that it would be THAT. None, whatsoever. I still have chills! It was really eye-opening. Seriously well-written climax, and ending. I love the ending of this book! It's very inspiring and uplifting. For a non-contemporary fan to say such great things about this book - it must be good!

What I Did Not Like:

I can't really think of anything at the moment - which is a surprise! There is usually something in a contemporary novel that bothers me (in EVERY novel, but especially contemporary). No book is perfect, but I liked this one a lot!

Would I Recommend It:

I would totally recommend this novel! I've been reading a lot of contemporary in the last few days, and I definitely can't say I'd recommend all of them... I'd recommend P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han because of its strong familial themes and great relationships (romance and otherwise), and I'd recommend this one for its subject matter (on mental illnesses). Definitely two very different contemporary novels, but both very worthy of your time!

Rating:

4 stars. I am impressed! It takes a lot to impress me in general, but definitely in terms of contemporary! I'll definitely be reading more of Stone's books in the future - and I want to read her debut series now!

EVERY LAST WORD
By Michelle (Adventures in Bookland )
I work in special education and I see a lot of different children with different needs. I always thought that there should be more books that explore both mental illness and learning disabilities; I think that’s why I jumped at the chance to read this story.

I thought this story was written in a very respectful way to children/ teens that deal with mental illness. I felt as though this story touched upon many different issues like; depression, anxiety, the pressure of high school and fitting in.

All the characters were likable (except a couple of the crazy eights). I loved Sam, AJ and Caroline and the rest of the kids in the Poet’s Corner. Each of them was dealing with their own issues and found their outlet in poetry and songs.

I also liked the fact that there were some things that completely surprised me! I was not expecting something that happened in the end and ended up being perfect.

I do think this is a great book for teens to read maybe they can find a part of themselves in one of the characters.

Loved this!

Let me start by saying that Disney-Hyperion is fast becoming one of my favorite publishers. I can’t recall reading a book of theirs that I didn’t enjoy. It’s gotten to the point where I request their titles on blind faith, even if the description doesn’t sound like my style, and their books still satisfy me.

This book was no exception. Sam is an excellent character, terribly, painfully introspective at times but with so much promise. There were times I felt frustrated by her. “Really?” I wanted to say. “You’re having a panic attack over that?” But isn’t that the thing about people? One person’s mountain is another person’s molehill, and this book captures that perfectly.

I loved Sam’s relationship with her mom, the way that the inside of her mind is almost the exact opposite of the rest of her, and how she struggles to match her lifestyle to her true self over the course of the book. There are some excellent depictions of OCD in here, and Sam’s relationship with Sue (her therapist) is one of the most special ones in the book. It’s touching and heartbreaking to hear Sam wonder what it’s like to be “normal” and to find someone who will love her, “broken brain” and all. My eyes filled with tears as I saw how lonely she was and how hard it was for her to finally embrace her brain for its strengths while fighting against its weaknesses. I saw so much of myself in her, and it was heartbreaking at times but also so amazingly accurate and true and real.

One of my favorite quotes:

"And I want to stop, but I can’t, because telling someone with OCD to stop obsessing about something is like telling someone who’s having an asthma attack to just breathe normally."

Also, can we talk about AJ for a minute? What a beautiful character. Are there really boys like this in high school? Because I’m pretty sure they only reside on the pages of YA novels — though I will try my damnedest to raise two boys as sensitive and considerate as this one was. He is a thoughtful, adorably-scruffy, guitar-strumming poet. I mean, seriously. How could Sam not obsess over him?! He’s not perfect, though, and I think I appreciated that most of all.

The only thing about this book that I didn’t like [MINOR SPOILER, I GUESS] was the sex scene. And no, it’s not the fact that there were high school kids having sex, even though I was most certainly not having sex in high school. It’s the fact that a girl who can never turn off her brain, who obsesses over everything, has sex and doesn’t think about it or analyze it at all. It happens and then isn’t really mentioned for the rest of the book It didn’t seem in keeping with the character and made me wonder what the purpose of that scene was. It felt sort of thrown in there, and I could have done without it because it didn’t seem to affect the rest of the story at all.

All in all: This is one of those rare books that I received as a free review copy that will go on my “To-Buy” list. It was just wonderful, and I can’t wait for it to hit shelves so that other readers can get their hands on it.

Note: I received a review copy of this book via NetGalley.

A Monk Swimming A Memoir, by Malachy McCourt

Slapped with a libel suit after an appearance on a talk show, Malachy McCourt crows, "If they could only see me now in the slums of Limerick, a big shot, sued for a million. Bejesus, isn't America a great and wonderful country?" His older brother Frank's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, Angela's Ashes, took its somber tone from the bleak atmosphere of those slums, while Malachy's boisterous recollections are fueled by his zestful appreciation for the opportunities and oddities of his native land.

He and Frank were born in Brooklyn, moved with their parents to Ireland as children, then returned to the States as adults. This book covers the decade 1952-63, when Malachy roistered across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, but spent most of his time in New York City. There his ready wit and quick tongue won him an acting job with the Irish Players, a semiregular stint on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar, and friendships with some well-heeled, well-born types who shared his fondness for saloon life and bankrolled him in an East Side saloon that may have been the first singles bar. He chronicles those events--and many others--with back-slapping bonhomie.

Although McCourt acknowledges the personal demons that pursued him from his poverty-stricken childhood and destroyed his first marriage, this is on the whole an exuberant autobiography that pays tribute to the joys of a freewheeling life.

Taking up where brother Frank left off, McCourt recounts his early days in New York. The title comes from McCourt's youthful misunderstanding of the phrase amongst women in the Hail Mary.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Coat-tailing the success of brother and performance partner Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes (1996), Malachy weighs in with his own memoir, recounting his raucous early days in the U.S. Picking up after the childhood so vividly described in Angela's Ashes, A Monk Swimming (a mishearing of the Hail Mary phrase "Blessed art thou amongst women") recounts the unlikely tales of Malachy's serendipitous success as an actor and a bar owner after arriving in New York penniless and uneducated. Amidst tales of his drinking and general carousing with the likes of Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Jack Paar, and Robert Mitchum, Malachy also tells of his unexpected meeting with the queen of England, rooming with a psychotic socialite, and disastrous first marriage and inability to accept its demise. By far the most interesting section is the vivid portrayal of smuggling gold bars from Zurich to India, which he did when desperate for a job. The language and storytelling have the indelible Irish lilt and genius for irony. They range from understated to downright scatological, and they are always paced for maximum payoff. The success of Frank's book and the huge media blitz for this one should make it a much-requested title, but those who appreciated the profundity of Angela's Ashes will be disappointed by this less meaty memoir. While many have made the mistake of comparing Malachy McCourt's adult memoir, A MONK SWIMMING, to his brother Frank's more tragic childhood recount in the Pulitzer Prize-winning ANGELA'S ASHES, I preferred reading the book on a completely separate level. As this younger brother's memoir is in a sense a continuation of the McCourt saga, which picks up from a different perspective on the hopeful ending of ASHES, it is a story of a different time, place and person, bereft of most of the second-hand misery that accompanied the 362 pages of Frank's heart-wrentching tale.
The character worries of ANGELA'S ASHES included surviving famine, tuburculosis and the general abominations of poverty. A MONK SWIMMING grapples mainly with the issues of managing an acting sometime career, excessive pubbing and sordid sexual conquests and the more literarily comical debacles derived from such.
Lacking the degree of drama, this book has perhaps been thought of as a disappointment in the wake of its seeming predecessor. Yet judged on its own merits and intentions, A MONK SWIMMING is a terrific piece altogether, told with all the heart and lilt that apparently runs strong in the McCourt clan. Malachy chronicles the charming, wily escapades of an unapologetic drunk--himself--in this, a story about an Irish immigrant living (and occasionally thriving) in America. His wit and style are a wonderful amalgam of Irish irony and lyricism with New York abrasiveness and sophistication.
There IS a tragic element to this narrative, however, in that Malachy proves to be much like his wretch of a father (for whom he was conveniently named), a man who oftentimes put the bottle before the family. In that there is a contrite quality to his descriptions of certain events, such as losing his first wife and not being allowed to see his children for a time. This adds reality and cynicism to an otherwise humorous bio that appears as the anecdotes progress through Malachy's evolvement as, dare I say, more American than Irish.
A MONK SWIMMING ought to be viewed and enjoyed for what it is: a genuine, tipsy romp, as clever and raucous as its author. It is not another ANGELA'S ASHES nor, rest assured, was it ever purported to be.

Dealing with the Past: A Less Romantic View
By A Customer
In "A Monk Swimming," Malachy McCourt recounts stories of his less-than-mature response to his awful childhood. His brother Frank, on the other hand, gives us a more refined, crafted, and artistic story. Both versions are worth reading. It's interesting to see how two related people emerged so differently from the same circumstances.
I like that Malachy McCourt gives no excuses for his behavior. He's a pretty objective recorder of his exploits; he doesn't pretty them up. He admits he drank too much, abandoned his wife and kids, and searched for some peace (unsuccessfully) through sex. He doesn't glorify himself; at the end, I was left with sadness. He closes with a description of his father and the pain of that relationship. This final chapter is the explanation (though not an excuse) for the rest of the exploits in the book.
Frank McCourt is the philosopher while Malachy is the bad kid who has no qualms about telling it like it is. When I read Malachy's version of McCourt history, I thought, 'Ok, poverty is not some romantic world where everyone ends up spouting gorgeous poetry and coming to terms with their past.' Malachy has humor, audacity, and a flare for hyperbole - all these the qualities of a good Irish storyteller. These are stories I could imagine hearing while sitting a bar - stories that are enlarged and enhanced upon each telling. Malachy clearly captures a time and place and a character (himself). Some might not like who he is, but he provides a vivid picture of who he is. He captures, by recounting his escapades, his own tortured response to his childhood.

An entertaining tale
By M. A. Ramos
This is the memoirs of the larger than life, hard-drinking Malachy McCourt. Born in America, rasied in Ireland and then back to New York as an teen. He made a name for himself in New York city as the first celebrity bartender. He was a social mixer, a writer, an actor of stage and screen. His gift for blarney made him a regular on the Tonight Show.
This book is darkly funny. And a bit raw in places, so be warned. But he does tell his story with passion, wit, irreverence and charm. This was a fun read.

Comprehensive, well written, and accurate
By Sharon Wrigley
I was certified on NT, but never got my W2k certification. So, it had been a while since I sat for an MS exam. I was obviouly aware that both the exams and the OS are very different from the NT days, so when I began my studies I was really looking to use the most thorough books I could find. I'm also studying on a tight budget (who isn't these days?), so I also wanted to be sure that I could get just one book for each exam, instead of having to buy several to fill in the gaps. I spent a lof of time looking through all of the available books at a local book store before actually buying from Amazon. It didn't teke me long to realize just how much better this book is from the competition. There's just no comparison between the depth of coverage in this book vs. the others. The DVD is also really helpful as well. I found the best way was to read a chapter, try the practice questions, and then watch that chatper on DVD. I was completely confident going into the exam that I would pass based on my work experience and my preparation with this book, and I did.

Outdated and DVD is a joke
By H. J. Coumans
The book is written in a good style with the ususal volume of screenshots.
But it is published in 2003 and in the mean time in the MS certification world things have changed dramatically.
Not only is SUS called WSUS today but also some fundamental changes are introduced with the release of SP1 for Windows Server 2003.
Also the exams have changed: The introduction of the simulator and the exam is more demanding.

Mainly based on this book I did the exam and failed. Not big time, but who cares.
So I ordered the 4 volume core requirements 2nd edition from Microsoft Press. There was a lot of detail I missed in this book. Still studying but feel confident the MS Press set will help me pass the exam.

Well and the DVD..... I said it all in the title. The female presentor (Certified MS instructor as well) is good looking, but it's not even enough material for a last minute recap.

Not a recommendation this book.

Finally, a Thor comic staring Thor! (Spoilers)
By Amazon Customer
For two years, Thor comics have been featuring Jason Aaron`s Mary Sued version of longtime supporting character Jane Foster. So now after ignoring fans for two years, Thor is now back and equally good news, Beta Ray Bill is alive again! Pick it up for the art and to see what Thor has been up to since Secret Wars. It won't change your life, but it's not insulting like the current main Thor series.

“Mouthwatering….Step–by–step instructions are illustrated with photographs at each stage. From the Back Cover

I'm Pioneer Woman.

And I love to cook.

Once upon a time, I fell in love with a cowboy. A strapping, rugged, chaps-wearing cowboy. Then I married him, moved to his ranch, had his babies . . . and wound up loving it. Except the manure. Living in the country for more than fifteen years has taught me a handful of eternal truths: every new day is a blessing, every drop of rain is a gift . . . and nothing tastes more delicious than food you cook yourself.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food from My Frontier is a mouthwatering collection of the simple-but-scrumptious recipes that rotate through my kitchen on a regular basis, including Perfect Pancakes, Cowgirl Quiche, Sloppy Joes, Italian Meatball Soup, White Chicken Enchiladas, and a spicy Carnitas Pizza that'll win you over for life. There are also some elegant offerings for more special occasions at your house: Osso Buco, Honey-Plum-Soy Chicken, and Rib-Eye Steak with an irresistible Onion-Blue Cheese Sauce. And the decadent assortment of desserts, including Blackberry Chip Ice Cream, Apple Dumplings, and Coffee Cream Cake, will make your heart go pitter-pat in the most wonderful way.

In addition to detailed step-by-step photographs, all the recipes in this book have one other important quality in common: They're guaranteed to make your kids, sweetheart, dinner guests, in-laws, friends, cousins, or resident cowboys smile, sigh, and beg for seconds. (And hug you and kiss you and be devoted to you for life.)

I hope you enjoy, devour, and love this book.

I sure did love making it for you.

Has a photo of food ever looked so good that you tried to smell it?
By Reviewer #67845
Ree Drummond, who uses the nom de plume "Pioneer Woman" for her eponymous show on the Food Network, is following on the success of her 2009 debut The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl with a new cookbook designed to bring the taste and culture of her family-style cooking to the rest of the world.

I've never seen an episode of Pioneer Woman, and had never heard of Ree Drummond up until a month ago. My familiarity with her grew quickly only a few pages into it. "Food from my Frontier" is filled with pictures and stories of her family and children, and if you don't know the names of everyone by the time you've reached the soup section, then it's likely several pages have gotten stuck together. At first glance, I started to groan. I know all about the emotional aspect of cooking, and I'm used to chefs playing up the "family angle" in their books, but for the most part, I gloss right over it. I would gladly give up pictures of Gordon Ramsay's children picking strawberries or Paula Deen's niece cutting herbs for a crusty, bubbling mac and cheese or even a nice dark roux. I can fully appreciate the market for "coffee table cookbooks," but mine will spend most of their lives on the counter, with hand-cracked spines to ensure they lay flat and pages covered in grease and olive oil. At first appearance, "Food from my Frontier" follows the same formula, but it quickly becomes clear that Drummond has hit a magical balance between form and function and created a cookbook that retains the down-homey family aspect that will make this book appeal to those that like to "read" cookbooks and those that use them to cook.

CONTENT
I started out my research into Drummond with the food blog that started her success, and on first glance, it is easy to see where that success came from. The strength of her food blog comes from the stunningly beautiful pictures that accompany each recipe. Food photography can be a difficult skill to master, but it's clear that Drummond could have easily picked it up professionally. Almost every aspect of her cooking, from mise en place, to preparation, to finished product, is documented in vibrant full color photos that are sure to work the salivary glands into overtime. The same format follows in this book. Each recipe (yes, even the one for iced tea) has an average of 10 accompanying photographs (all taken by Drummond herself). The pictures are fairly small, but large enough to show technique and give you an idea of what you should be doing. There are still numerous non-food photos of Drummond's family, pets, and various farm animals, but the layout is so well-managed that there is more than enough room for them and they serve to add character to the book without taking away from the actual cooking.

RECIPES
There are 119 recipes in all. Normally for a cookbook of this size I would expect at least 150, but given how much space is devoted to each recipe, this is a very respectable number. If you are a devotee to the blog, most of these recipes are going to feel very familiar to you. I went through all of the recipes and came up with 30 that appeared to be truly original to the book. All the rest can be found on her blog. Some of the recipes were "reworked," which mostly just means that they had better pictures taken, and possibly small ingredient changes. But I can't fault Drummond because she likes to give away free recipes. I will however say that if you're having trouble with a particular recipe, look it up on the blog, because she has many more pictures and the steps are described in greater detail. I have had no problem following the recipes I have tried from the book though. The book follows the traditional format of most cookbooks, but adds a "Canning" section at the end. The recipe breakdown (followed by number of recipes) is as follows:

Breakfast (13)
Lunch (14)
Soups (7)
Starters, Party Food, and Drinks (15)
Pasta and Pizza (10)
Supper (21)
Sides (10)
Sweets (17)
Canning (12)

I tried recipes from each section (except the canning), and I think the strength of this book comes from the Starters/Party Food, and the Sweets. You'll find there are several classics, such as caprese salad, guacamole, and quiche, but almost all of the recipes have something original about the preparation or an added ingredient that gives them new life. I've seen a dozen recipes for caprese salad, and they are pretty much exactly the same (which is to be expected for this dish), but I had never thought to heat the balsamic before, which reduces it and concentrates the flavor, to give a much nicer presentation and richer taste. While trying Pioneer Woman's recipe for sliders, I was surprised by how much flavor was added to the burgers by adding heavy cream to the ground beef and lathering the buns with fry sauce (ketchup mixed with mayonnaise).

Usually I'll be lucky if even half of the recipes in a cookbook appeal to me, but I could see myself eventually making almost all (with the exception of some of the drinks) of the recipes in "Food from my Frontier." All of the recipes I've tried have been very easy to recreate and although my presentation is not yet on par with Drummond's, I would be surprised if the taste of my dishes were much different. The recipes are all easy to follow and do not require advanced techniques or weird ingredients that you're going to have to get at a specialty store. These are quality southern recipes that I think will appeal to kids and parents alike. Although be warned - they are not for those who are concerned with counting calories.

CRITICISM
- Lack of preparation/cooking time. It's not too difficult to figure this out from reading the recipes, but I think every cookbook should have an estimated cooking time below the serving size to give you a general idea of how long you're going to be in the kitchen.

- The book also contains a lot of the previously-mentioned camp - dozens of family pictures, life on the farm, and photos of animals with captions above them. But as I said, it's easy enough to skim over if you're not into it and I don't feel like it takes away from the content of the food portion of the book. Even though I usually hate this kind of thing, I felt that it even added to the book in this case.

- These recipes are about as far away from "healthy" as you can get. I don't fault the book at all for this (and this isn't really a criticism), since it's not advertised as a healthy cookbook, but the ingredients in these dishes would make Paula Deen blush. Make sure you have your kitchen well stocked with lots of eggs, sugar, fats, and red meat. The Drummond family can get away with it since they're working on a farm for 12 hours a day, but if the average American eats this stuff every day they will have a heart attack before they make it to the desserts section.

CONCLUSION
I have grown up in an age where cooks are spoiled by beautiful cookbooks. I can no longer pick up my mother's 30 year old Junior League cookbooks, filled with hundreds of recipes in a spiral bound book. While I am sure that Susie Greenleaf's recipe for crawfish pie is delicious, I will likely never try it because it lacks the visual accompaniment to get me excited about making it. I fear that "Food from my Frontier" is setting a dangerous precedent. How will other chefs be able to compete with their own Coffee Cream Cake recipe without a full page photo of a moist and rich bundle of calories like we're given on page 253? Maybe Ms. Drummond should consider a side job doing food photography full time? Until then, Pioneer Woman's "Food from my Frontier" will retain its place of prominence behind my grease-stained cookbook stand.

Like the first book better
By Lisa
I like cookbooks. I don't care if an author has a blog and every recipe can already be found online for free. If I like the author enough I will spend the money so I can have the book, with all the recipes in one place, to enjoy at my convenience. I don't think it's fair to judge a book solely on whether the recipes can be had elsewhere for free. That being said, I just don't like this book as much as the first one. The first one grabbed me because it was fun and flirty, written in a tone that drew me in, with lighthearted photos and simple, delicious recipes. I didn't mind the extensive detail or the photos of the process that went into making each and every dish. This time, though, and I can't quite put my finger on it, I'm bored. The recipes aren't grabbing me; her down-home charm is wearing a bit thin. The recipes are more "exotic" (for her) this time around and a big departure from what she claims her family will eat. Her tone also seems more forced, as if she's trying desperately to hang on to who she was the first time around. And I personally cannot handle one more photo of a hand with a spoonful of paprika in its palm. There's detail and there's too much detail and these types of photos seem more filler than necessary. I have no real desire to cook from this book. This is not to say it's a bad book, rather, I just wish it drew me in as much as the first.

Do not get this book, major typos and incorrect images
By Julian Javier Puga
This book is written well, but the sketchup graphics and line weights are off, not to mention the call outs and pictures are sometimes incorrect. I have contact Springer and thought you should get the info as well. Just a few examples of why not to get this book:

p.56 - It is Casa Batllo (not Batillo) and the picture is the Kunzthaus Graz by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier.

p.441 - the primary structural elements and glazing line have the exact same line weight, which makes the 6 diagrams very difficult to use.

p. various - many times the call out numbers (in circles) are on top of two materials...so it is up to you to decide which material they are describing. They should have used basic leaders with arrows or dots.

p. various - the circle call outs are all black; at times they are placed on top of really dark material making it difficult to read. Perhaps white font would help (p 120, number 13)

p 228, various. This is the one that is really upsetting. Many times the detail key doesn't correspond with the renderings i.e. 10 cannot be extruded aluminum section, and where is 11,12, and 13 on the Detail key? Where is 2 on the render?

p. 279. It appears they used a line (not leader) for number 4, but this looks like a piece of structure. Perhaps a leader would help.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. I have had this book for 2 hours...if I had more time I'm sure I could point out more. Newtecnic (the authors) have been contacted with this same email. Save your money.
