Broad and Basic

This book gives a very broad, basic view of France. If you know nothing about France, it can be helpful. However, if you've ever taken French classes in high school or college, you've probably learned these cultural notes in the introductory courses. As a study abroad advisor, I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know anything about France, but would be very worried if I was sending a student to France for a year and this was the extent of his/her knowledge! If you're going to France for a week on a tour, this book will help prepare you and may explain some of the questions you have about France. If you're going to be going to France for a longer period of time and/or want to really develop a greater understanding of French culture, this book is way too general and introductory for you. It's set up like a mini encyclopedia, with the subjects arranged alphabetically, not by category or subject area. It's an interesting set up, and fine for a brief introduction to French culture. If you're a strict grammarian who finds it distracting to read texts with grammatical errors, be forewarned: this book has several grammatical errors throughout its subjects.

Very good guide to culture of "France" only.

This book is part of a series of cultural guides; others in the series are "The Hispanic Way", "The German Way", & "The Italian Way". I'd read & enjoyed both "The Hispanic Way" & "The German Way", so when finding "The French Way", I wanted to read it, too. Taken as a guide exclusively to France & its people, this book is quite serviceable & thorough. And like any book this size & attempting to deal with a topic of this scope, "The French Way" is not going to be exhaustive, but rather is a good introduction & "stepping-stone" to further reading. There is indeed good information in this book. However, "The Hispanic Way" & "The German Way" are more thorough, providing information not exclusive on "Spain" or "Germany", respectively, but on Spanish-speaking countries & German-speaking coutries, too. Obviously, the francophone world is huge, & a book of this size would have to focus primarily on one area; "The Hispanic Way" focused on Spain, does provide information about Hispanic America as well. I had hoped that "The French Way" would include some information about Belgium, Luxembourg, & Canada at least. Since this book doesn't include at least a little more information about these other francophone areas, I'd have to give it only 4 stars.

He received the Conference of Learned Journals award for the best new journal. In addition, he was also named Southern Mississippi's first Distinguished Professor in the Humanities. Dr. Kolin has published almost 40 books and 200 scholarly articles covering a variety of subjects, including writing, drama, linguistics, and popular culture. He also has written an award-winning book on professional writing for nurses and articles on writing for lawyers and other professionals. Over the years, he has conducted workshops on technical business writing, the publication process, and managing professional communications. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

This book is well-written, insightful and humorous. The authors' candidly share some of their own trials and triumphs as a couple around money, which is refreshing and real. In addition to nuts-and-bolts financial information the authors give great suggestions on discussions you need to have with your partner around money and how to go about having them.

Interesting but US-centric

It is an interesting tome though I must confess that I read it after I walked the aisle, and after we bought our diamonds! Since it is US-centric in its information and guidelines, I would say to couples like us - in Europe - this provides a very handy thought structuring input provider. The guidelines are broad and with a little research one can use it for one's specific country context. The tone is friendly and the subject knowledge of the authors comes through as well as their effort to make it idiot-friendly (no offence to anyone!). I would recommend it and my husband is next in line to read my copy.

About the Author
Gail Ramshaw is a scholar of liturgical language and professor of religion at La Salle University. She served on the Revised Common Lectionary design committee and on the Church's Year task force for the Renewing Worship project of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her many publications include Christian Worship, Treasures Old and New, Between Sundays, and God beyond Gender, all from Fortress Press.

A great read with good insight!

Have you ever had questions about the Christian faith? Why this is so important to some and why others regard it as nothing? Gail Ramshaw composes a wonderful book that helps answers many questions that people have regarding the Christian faith. Ramshaw writes in such a way, a person is easily able to understand. In this way, he helps the reader grasp different perspectives of understanding. Ramshaw offers countless definitions to clarify what the meaning of each word is as they are typically used within the church.

This book provides great insight for anyone who is part of the Christian faith, helping them understand more about the gathering of the books that make up the Bible. Ramshaw discusses the different denominations that have formed, and the roots to our modern church. This book would be ideal for any college course looking at the topics that are covered. I could see great potential in a high school study or adult education opportunities within the church. At the end of each chapter, Ramshaw offers suggestions for discussion and for further learning to take place among those who are reading the book.

Ramshaw gives the Christian voice a clear and easily understood insight into the history of the church. While the book offers the reader a good picture of the great movements, Ramshaw includes many references for the reader to go and explore more about the topic.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about Christianity.

Sharp. Simple. Honest. Humble.

I've read a number of screenwriting books, but none has done such a great job of backing up its suggestions with real-movie examples as "Scriptshadow Secrets."
It's sharp and simple, honest and humble.
(That humility is necessary. So many of these books come across as haughty. "Good for you that you've decided to listen to ME!" This one doesn't.)
His treatise on GSU is worth the price alone.
If you're new to the craft, or have been around the block, this book will either teach you the ins and outs or remind you of them.
And, if nothing else, it will drill into your brain: you HAVE to read scripts to get good at writing them. Just watching movies doesn't count.

Great script writing advice for newbies - can be a bit overwhelming though!

Scriptshadow Secrets is a great book. It's full of amazing tips that can be used by all screenwriters, whether you are an amateur writer starting out, or someone needing advice on how to give your script that edge to break into Hollywood. By using a casual, conversational tone, Carson breaks down big Hollywood screenplays and helps you understand what makes them so great/got sold in the first place.

If should be noted that this is NOT a book to make you into a great writer but how to hone your decent script so it becomes a great movie that you can actually sell. Even if you're not close to that stage yet (strictly on the amateur level myself) it's still great to filter your script or script ideas through, to see if they're going to be "worth the read" of some producer/director someday!

But even if you have no interest in writing scripts - maybe you'd just like some insight into how movies get started - I'd still recommend it as a fascinating read; to find out what it takes for screenplays (of those movies you love and hate) to catch the eye of Hollywood.

One wish - that the tips were somehow sorted into categories; reading tip after tip is great but can be overwhelming when trying to apply them all!

Fresh and engaging must read for screenwriters

Scriptshadow for the score.

Whether you're a true beginner just starting out, or a practitioner in the market for advice for how to give your scripts that something extra they're lacking, this is a book for you.

So many screenwriting books are done in that dry textbook feel that makes getting through it feel like a chore. This book, like the blog itself, is written in a user friendly way and uses popular and identifiable films as examples of how to execute the points the author is trying to make. For example you're much more likely to get a better grasp of the ideas of "character likability" or "establishing your villain" if your presented with prime examples your already familiar with, like from the always reliable Star Wars or Indiana Jones films.

The only downside is navigation. Unlike most screenwriting books which have a detailed table of contents enabling a target search, this book is without. So if your searching for something specific you have to remember which movie the tips were used on and find it from there. A relatively small inconvenience for such a good resource.

For anyone looking to expand their understanding of screenwriting this is a must read.

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in humane studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and taught sociology to thousands of students.

In 2002, the American Sociological Association presented Macionis with the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as the introduction of new teaching technology in his textbooks.

Professor Macionis has been active in academic programs in other countries, having traveled to some fifty nations. He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher—a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family—John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney—live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

so very happy with the book

Well written. Plenty of examples. Got an A in the online course, so very happy with the book, Now to the publishers, about the annual upgrades and the outrageous pricing of new textbooks is another issue.
