Gr 2-4–Fifth-grader Rufus's only wish is to get a dog, but his work-at-home dad objects. He lists numerous reasons, including that dogs lick people's faces, chase cars, and eat dead things. Rufus's mom brings home a guinea pig instead in an attempt to fulfill her son's desire for a pet. To his surprise, the guinea pig, which he names Fido, acts like a dog. She obeys his commands and chews his dad's shoes. When Rufus's family decides to return the animal to the pet store, a classmate is willing to buy her to replace her hamster. But Rufus begins to have second thoughts about relinquishing the guinea pig. Although no explanation is given for why Fido behaves like a dog, children will have no problem accepting the absurdity of the situation. Jennings' salute to kids who get less (and more) than they ask for offers a unique and hilarious take on boy-dog bonding. Fifth-grader Rufus begs for a dog, but because Dad says no (in an enumerated list), Mom brings home a guinea pig. Rufus is disappointed, and Dad is annoyed, but because the pet shop has vanished, they are stuck with a rodent that barks, fetches sticks, whines, and licks faces. Rufus is both embarrassed (what will his friends think?) and charmed by Fido's doglike behaviors; the scale finally tips in the pig's direction when he executes a perfect, Lassie-like rescue of his master. As he did in Faith and the Electric Dogs (1996) and more recently in We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes (2009), Jennings injects magic realism into a story filled with believable yet flawed characters, resulting in a satisfying story. Short, manageable chapters; a breezy, conversational style; and identifiable characters (the bully, the show-off, the obsessive stay-at-home dad) make this a good choice for readers making the transition to chapter books. Hilarious

This book is great fun for both the parent and the child. My son hates to read and doesn't care to be read to, but this book has changed that. He impatiently asks me to read him "Guinea Dog" each night. The school yard scene with the guinea pig chasing Rufus made us laugh so hard we had to stop and catch our breath before we could continue. We will definitely be looking for more books by Patric Jennings to read.

We can't all be golden retrievers

Right over here! Look this way! Over here! TWEET! You looking? Yeah, so right over we've got ourselves a Patrick Jennings fan. Yup. Patrick Jennings. The guy who wrote that fantastic "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes", along with approximately a hundred other books. You've read him, right? No? Well that's fine with me. It's like when you discover this cool underground band, and you get to be their biggest fan all by yourself. It's great. You walk around with this knowledge in your head of, "I am into something incredible that only I know about." That's how it is with Patrick Jennings and me. Problem is, I keep recommending his books to the kids in my library. And if I keep this up, I may end up unexpectedly creating a whole host of Jennings fans. Then he'll get hugely popular and go mainstream and I'll have to share him with the rest of the world. After all, he's a fantastic author who writes primarily animal books (not many folks do that these days, y'know) and who's latest title "Guinea Dog" is just about the most fun you can get out of a book about a guinea pig with ambitions.

"My dream of a dog died then and there. Instead, I was the proud owner/caretaker of a plump, punk guinea sow. Like, yippee." Rufus is a pretty easy guy to figure out. He wants a dog. A dog is all his wants, in fact. His father, unfortunately, is dead set against this idea, and what Rufus's dad says goes. That is, until the day Rufus's mom brings home a guinea pig as a kind of compromise. Rufus is not impressed, nor is his dad, but this guinea pig, dubbed Fido, is hardly normal. She pants. She fetches. She plays dead on command. And ever so slowly, while dealing with some best friend issues at school, Rufus starts to see the advantages to having a pet that isn't exactly like everyone else's.

Now the dialogue in this book is nothing short of divine. Snarky kids are not easy to write. Not so as they sound like real kids anyway. And Jennings has created a particularly smart alecky type of kid. Fortunately he's old enough to believably come up with the lines put in his mouth. Some of my favorites include the moment when Fido starts making too much noise and Rufus's dad asks what the racket is. "I pointed at Fido. `Why, it's the quiet, clean pet Mom bought me'." I like that Jennings feels no need to telegraph that line by inserting an "I said sarcastically". He shows, and doesn't tell, this author. In terms of descriptions Rufus says of himself that he has, "a neck that could stop growing any time without any complaint from me." He says of his father, "That's what Dad can do to you. He can make you forget you have a chubby rat in a sack on your back." And he later mentions that since he's a better staller than a liar, "Maybe one day I'll write my own book: The Complete Dork's Guide to Hemming and Hawing."

It's interesting to see where Jennings puts his point of view in his stories. In the aforementioned "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes" the hero of the book was Crusher, a snake. She was inclined to view the world with a particularly snakey take. "Guinea Dog", in contrast, is entirely from Rufus (the boy's) point of view. The guinea pig is left as a kind of a mysterious entity. Her thoughts are her own, hidden from human understanding. Jennings also isn't afraid of creating female animals in his books. The heroine of "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes" was a lady snake. In this book Fido is a female guinea pig (dog). I'm sure you could make all kinds of interesting psychological interpretations of what a boy/female pet pairing really means, but all I care is that we're getting some strong girl characters in our kids' books. Even if those girls do happen to be covered in scales and fur.

The little details are what I like best of all, though. We have finally gotten to the point in children's literature where parents have jobs like editing golf online magazines from home. So that was a realistic, not to say contemporary, detail that I appreciated. I also loved that Rufus's hobby was collecting Scrabble tiles.

Not that there weren't a couple moments that didn't entirely gel with the rest of the book. For example, there was a time when I was confused about Rufus's devotion to his new pet. One minute he's dead set against having Fido adopted by a girl in his class. Next minute he's saying, "I didn't want them - especially Mom - to have any extra reasons to want to keep her [the guinea pig]." It didn't happen very often, but once in a while I was confused.

The book would actually pair bee-autifully with "Wishworks, Inc." by Stephanie Tolan. In that early chapter book too a boy wants a beautiful, strong, independent dog of his own... and ends up with an unexpected pet instead. At least you can say that Rufus got himself a better behaved breed of dog-wannabe. And since 2010 is the year for good guinea pig-related literature, you might also pair it with "Hamster and Cheese" by Colleen AF Venable. That female guinea pig has more of a bedhead hairdo, however, while Fido's hair is described as having a punk rock look.

"Guinea Dog" does not contain a big story arc, all things considered. That is fine. Not every book has to include an epic quest or enormous fights between characters. Jennings thinks that we'll be content with this tale of a boy trying to understand both his best friend and his new pet, and he's right. We really are content with that. We're content because the writing is strong, the characters a lot of fun, and the story just plain enjoyable. You don't need to be a fan of guinea pigs to enjoy this book. Heck, you don't need to be a fan of dogs either for that matter. All you need to be a fan of is fun books for kids. Books that everyone can enjoy. Consider this a great readaloud for classes, or for kids who are comfortable with chapter book but are scared of 200+ page tomes. There's a little bit of something everyone can enjoy in this newest Jennings number.

Great book for a 5th grader book club

My daughter's book club read this book. The club is a group of 5th graders. Her review was that book started off slow, but the middle and end of the story was awesome. The book provided a nice discussion and was fun to read. All of the girls in the book club enjoyed the book and said they would recommend it to others.

About the Author
George Augustus Moore (24 February 1852 – 21 January 1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. Moore came from a Roman Catholic landed family who lived at Moore Hall in Carra, County Mayo. He originally wanted to be a painter, and studied art in Paris during the 1870s. There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of �mile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist.

Groundbreaking work

This interlinked group of stories anticipates Joyce's 'Dubliners' by years and prefigures in many respects not only that book but its successor 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. Moore's accounts of mean Irish life are both tender and acute in analysis. The penultimate tale 'The Wild Goose' subsumes one of the finest uses in literature of the philosophy of Nietzsche, especially his famous lines on 'stellar friendship'. We see here a new 20th century impulse towards self-realization struggling against the nostalgia it inevitably entails, a condition of soul that would be so beautifully etched in 'The Dead' and in the peregrinations of Stephen Dedalus, as well as works that go beyond the Irish scene - Jack London too springs to mind: 'Oakland was only a place to start from'.

Johannes Stein is currently a student at the University of Augsburg in Germany. He began showing an interest in computers and developing for the PC platform when he was just 12-13 years old. Does what it says on the tin, no more

Hey look a new book on Irrlicht!

What it covers:

- Detailed information on setting up your dev environment (covers Windows, linux and OSX)
- Basic overview of the engine accompanied by some simple example code. I don't think the longest code example is more than two pages.
- Using sprite sheets
- Using CopperTube to export a scene with lighting
- Using ScapeMaker (I'd never even heard of that tool before) to generate a terrain and how to render it
- Quick if a bit shallow tutorials on getting things like particles, mesh loading, etc

What it doesn't cover:

- Any hard/tricky stuff
- Dynamically doing stuff like shooting bullets and making real-time changes to the scenegraph
- Advanced collision or advanced anything
- Bringing it all together in a simple game like pong or something
- Detailed info and gotchas

So there you have it, it does what it says on the tin: a no-nonsense, well illustrated, beginner's guide. Only useful for those absolutely new to Irrlicht - very quickly you'd want to switch to the official online tutorials to go deeper.

The thing is, if you really have the required skills to develop a 3d game with Irrlicht, you probably aren't going to be hung up on issues like understanding model formats or adding library paths to MSVC++. Now where is the advanced book...

Introducing Beginners to Irrlicht

I have to tell in advance that I'm one of the Irrlicht programmers, a long-time user and loving the Irrlicht 3D engine madly. So I was reading the book rather out of curiosity than out of need to learn about Irrlicht and can't really comment out of a beginners perspective.

The readers are expected to have basic c++ knowledge without much project or programming experience. A short introduction on templates is also added, probably because this is a topic which beginners often struggle with. No knowledge about 3D is assumed, but also not too much background is given. So there is for example a small chapter about the Irrlicht vector-math class, but there is no real introduction to vector math. Which means readers have to learn about typical 3D math like vectors and matrices from other sources.

The book is going over a few simple examples for every topic in a detailed step-by-step approach. Many of the examples are close to the examples coming with the Irrlicht engine, but usually more streamlined. The descriptions are unfortunately often a little mechanical and missing some depth. For example setting up an IDE with screenshots for every step sounds nice until you realize how fast such information is outdated. An explanation about general principles of project files, include files and linking which allows readers understanding how to set-up a project even on an IDE which they've never seen before would have been better. Also some details feel a little like page-filling. Going over function-parameters one by one, in many cases without really adding anything to the API documentation, just teaches beginners bad habits. People should rather learn how to find the information fast within the API documentation as that will serve them a lot better in the long run.

The quality of the chapters varies somewhat. There are very good chapters, with nice background information and great introductions like the chapter about lights. But then there is for example also a really weak chapter about Irrlicht class-types which seems to have a near random presentation of basic classes while important concepts for Irrlicht like the reference-counting mechanism, the material system or the vertex structures are completely ignored. Maybe those were seen as too advanced concepts, but from my experience this is stuff beginners run into within days.

Another thing I've been missing is some glossary about the terms used in the book. For example when there is a chapter about XML reading/writing, then there should at least be a short description somewhere about what XML is and when to use it.

Despite some criticism - the book generally delivers what it promises and helps beginners to take their first steps with Irrlicht and 3D programming. It might sometimes forget to show the forest for all the trees it presents, but the major parts of Irrlicht are all introduced in an easy to follow manner. So for anyone just starting out on their game programming journey - get this book together with a nice book about c++ and maybe freshen up your math a little bit and you'll have your own space-invaders running in no time!

Great INTRODUCTION to Irrlicht

If you want to get started with Irrlicht and don't want to wade through API docs and samples, you'd rather learn it in book format, then this is a good book for you.

Emphasis is put on examples and results-driven learning. Thanks to the power of Irrlicht, most examples are just a few added lines of code, or they build up in steps that are each just a few lines long. At times, I almost saw these examples as recipes. For example, one of the very first actions is to create the IrrlichtDevice object. There's a nice step-by-step explaining to create your main method, initialize the IrrlichtDevice with createDevice, check the pointer, and then drop the device. The next examples build on this one with more steps. And when the chapter is over, you have a working demo - essentially the equivalent of one of the samples included with Irrlicht, but instead of looking at the sample's finished code, you've built it up step-by-step in the order that you would actually build a program.

Along the way, explanations and advice are also given. When a new function call or type is introduced, it's explained. When a new 3D topic is introduced, it's (very lightly) explained. Never, along the way, is anything confusing. Every example is introduced first in the steps to implement it (so for example you could just follow the steps in your own program to add the feature), followed by an actual complete code sample of the feature. This makes the usage abundantly clear. Also, screenshots are used throughout the book, both on every sample and to supplement explanations of theory.

Now, there are things this book is not. It is not an introduction to 3D theory at all. The cover even says, "learn by doing: less theory, more results". And indeed the use of Irrlicht requires very little 3D knowledge, since Irrlicht abstracts away the low-level graphics operations for the user. It's probably not a good reference - sure, you could check a section to see how to use a certain feature, but for anything non-trivial you're going to need to look elsewhere. It's not a start-to-finish book on developing an application; instead, every chapter builds up a new sample application using the new features introduced in that chapter. And of course it's not a game development book - game development is only one of the uses for the Irrlicht engine, and while games are mentioned in a couple of the topics in the book (sprite sheet rendering, rendering and moving a 2D ball), a game is not made.

It's also not perfect; I did find one logic bug. To be clear, I did NOT see any errors with the usage of Irrlicht. And there is the occasional grammar error, which I certainly excuse because the author's native language is not English. Nothing that cripples the usefulness of this book as a beginner's guide, though.

In summary, the book is exactly as its title describes - it is a beginner's guide to Irrlicht. It is not a guide to 3D concepts, it is not a reference manual or advanced guide. It does not instruct you on how to extend Irrlicht. It isn't a guide to making a game with Irrlicht. But it is a complete walkthrough of every feature of Irrlicht, explaining each feature with explanations, examples, and screenshots.

I've given it 5 stars because I believe as a beginner's guide to Irrlicht (which is exactly what it advertises itself as), it hits the mark. I would love for a more advanced Irrlicht book to come out, but this does not take away from the fact that I think this book is extremely useful to someone who has no prior knowledge of Irrlicht other than its purpose/features, and learns best by reading a book.

Quite useless

This really an over-promising, under-delivering book on helping people prepare and get a job in private equity. I bought this book hoping to understand the enigmatic world of private equity recruiting, however was not able to gleam much insight other than the "should have close to 4.0 GPA from a top school", etc., stuff that people already know.

The book does not give any strategies, tactics or real anecdotal evidence on how people usually break into the field, providing only a few resumes and some general stuff. It makes one wonder if the company, Glocap, really knows about how to help people get in, or if they're trying to save their knowhow for a VIP version of the book.

I did eventually get a job with a PE shop, and what helped was searching all over the net for various recruiting resources, from sample questions, to current trends etc.. Preparing for these interviews is definitely crucial, though not necessarily with this book.

a awesome sequel

With this novel, Bueno is off and running. Picking up the pieces from the first novel in the series, and using the same inviting tone and brilliant storytelling he draws you in right from the get-go and doesn’t let go until the very end. He recaps just enough to jog the reader’s memory as to who’s who and who did what in the first novel, but doesn’t overdo it or bore his readers. By using the same great flow and easy to follow dialogue he ties the stories together quite nicely while taking off with a different part of this brilliant story. That said, this instalment is more intense than its predecessor, yet is still a mellow, light read that is very easy to immerse yourself in fully. This sequel is also a lot more brooding, but we really get to the heart of the story with that.

The characters in this novel continue to grow as individuals and as friends. They are each developed so individually that as a reader you get to see the minute differences in their reactions to a single event. It’s quite a trip. The new characters that Bueno introduces in this instalment are also quite well developed and add to the storyline as a whole. You’ll also note that the supporting cast from the first novel become much more fully developed as their roles in the story grow.

Overall, this was a brilliant sequel to the first singularity novel, drawing you deeper into this world of magic and secrecy. At the end, I was only left with a single question: with this twisted ending, how will it all work out in the end?

The story was fast paced, laced with humor and simply a great read!

I received a complimentary copy of Broken Spell from the author. This did not effect my honest review!

I loved the first book in the Singularity series, Wicked Sense…so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this new installation. I was not disappointed! It was good to see the gang back, I had really enjoyed and become attached to these characters. In Broken Spell, Drake and Skye beat the odds in Wicked Sense to be with one another and so now the pair must continue to beat those same odds to stay together!

Of course with the two teens dealing with maturing and overwhelming feelings; throw in the mix the formidable mission of protecting and shielding the Singularity until she has reach her fullest potential with her powers–plus the increasingly alarming dealings with the Coven– and there is never a dull moment.

When tragedy strikes the group comes together to face the challenge, endearing the group once again to me as a reader:)

A slew of twist and turns! Action abounds, the story is fast paced, laced with humor and simply a great read!

I looked forward to the next in the Singularity series and have become an avid fan of Author Fabio Bueno!

I Highly recommend Broken Spell for those who enjoy the Paranormal and Supernatural!

I really loved this book. Great series.

I just loved this book. I really loved the first book Wicked Sense and was so happy to be able to read this 2nd one. I really wanted to know what was going on with Skye and Drake. I loved the guessing that took place for us. I still love how it swaps between Drake and Skye point of views, makes it really interesting.

I love this world of the witches the author created, and it takes place not too far from where I live, Seattle, which is cool.

I won’t add spoilers, as I know some may not have read book one yet. But want to say how great this series is. Try is, it’s worth it.

I give 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended.

Requires an answer key...

When I first began looking at the book I was excited. It was exactly what I needed to assist me through a few finance and accounting courses. Unfortunately, my excitement quickly subsided when I realized there were no answers to check my work against. Ultimately, it turns into a pile of homework that the student shall never have graded or know if anything was done correctly.

I DO recommend it..and if instructors are willing to 'grade it' then it should be an excellent addition to your library. However, if you are alone, like I am, attending a course online with no instructor interest in the book, then its worth is seriously downgraded.

If I could have answer keys for this book, I would give it 5 stars..
