As the first in-depth historical study of women's involvement in uniform, plain-clothes and undercover policing in the period before formal integration with male officers in the 1970s, it charts the relationship between gender, surveillance and penal-welfare strategies. For much of the twentieth century women police played a 'specialist' role in the detection and prevention of child abuse and neglect, the investigation of sexual violence and, in London, the regulation of prostitution. The book shows how women officers fashioned their own 'feminine' occupational culture and style of working in relation to male colleagues, other professionals and the women and children they encountered. Jackson concludes by examining experiences at the end of the twentieth century, comparing and contrasting the differing concepts of 'equality' that have shaped women's involvement in the police service.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

I love the smoken hot Sanibel, Captiva, Immortal Vampire Werewolf books. The stories keep getting better! I couldn't put Sage's story down. Very intense beginning to end. A few new characters were introduced as well as some old favorites. Prince Volos really made another leap in stamping out corruption and giving more protection and rites to the donors. I can't wait for Flynn Ruyter's story, I love those Ruyter Beta's. I'll take one and a vojak too! I am hoping Besta , Motka, Dax and Fedor, have a story. I so want to meet Sage's dad and more of the A-Team style mercenaries . Can't wait to see what happens next.

I could not put this book down! Sage is mentioned in her previous books and I was so anticipating his story! Sage, Roman and Scarlett had chemistry immediately only to be put on hold by a distrubed Gryph. The story that insues in both intense and hopeful as their lives twine together. Scarlett is a very strong and powerful force. Must read!

Gr 10 Up-History, high culture (thought and religion; literature, art, and architecture; the performing arts), popular culture (leisure activities, holidays, fashion, the media), and topics of sociological interest (marriage, gender, children, and education) are all clearly presented, from tsarist Russia to the recent years of the Russian Federation. While much of the historical information can be found in references such as The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Russia (Cambridge, 1994; o.p.) and in books on each topic, the strength of Schultze's book is that it offers an array of informed commentary in a concise format and gives excellent coverage to the past decade. For example, there is up-to-date information on the status of women, changes in the media and the arts, and much more. The author knows the culture well and does a good job of contextualizing the material with only occasional lapses into lists. There are suggested readings at the end of each chapter, a glossary, and a six-page bibliography. However, the illustrations are disappointing-a mere 16 pages of grainy, black-and-white photos that have been inserted in the middle of the book. In addition, the crude map seems to indicate that Russia and Turkey share a border, and, while two Siberian rivers are marked, the Volga, which is so important to Russian culture, is not. She presents the information in a factual manner, with little interpretation. James Billington's The Icon and the Axe (1968; Peter Smith, 1994. reprint), aimed at graduate specialists in literature or history, is superior in its interpretations and concentration on cultural history but omits Russia's daily life. Genevra Gerhart's The Russian's World (Harcourt, 1995) provides a wealth of detail on individual life and personal relations, with an emphasis on Russia's rural heritage, but it presupposes knowledge of Russian and is more appropriate for the advanced student. Schultze describes an urban Russia for readers with a minimal knowledge of Russia; it is particularly suited for high school students and beginning college students. Excellent overview

This book provides an excellent overview of Russian culture. However, the reader must have access to some source for viewing/reading the material discussed, since there are few reproductions of texts or artwork.

Mike Lawrence is concerned less with how to play your hand than with how to think about playing. The idea is to minimize risk by deducing where your opponent's high cards are. Lawrence shows how to spot and interpret clues from the opening bid on with chapters titled "Sizing Up the Case," "Finding the Witness," "Analyzing the Clues," "Conducting the Investigation," "Checking the Evidence," "Nailing Down the Case," and "Making Your Sixth Sense Work." The latter deals with watching your opponent's body language for the "tells" that reveal their thoughts involuntarily. Each chapter but the last features a quiz section to help you practice techniques.

For those who want to become strong bridge players

It takes a fair amount of work and effort to apply the techniques presented in this book. But it's time well spent. If you can master these skills you will be a very good club player. Be aware that its slow going as you have to follow every card play and think about whats going on.
Why didnt the West lead hearts when he opened 1 Heart? Hmmm, probably because West doesn't have AK or KH, so the honors are split. That means East has 3 or 4 high card points. Since East already showed up with teh Queen of clubs, its liekly he's empty, else he would have raised Wests 1 heart opener. Therefore take the finesse against Wests Queen of Diamonds.
The amazing thing is after a while I was able to play almost every honor in all the hands.
This works, just takes effort to apply it. Spend your tiem counting HCP, and distributions, and you will become a solid player. You don't have to study 5 books on Sqeezes, 8 books on bidding, etc. Concentrate on the basics and you will greatly improve.

MUST-READ book

Mike Lawrence is one of the most intelligent authors I have ever read (and I read a lot). This is also one of his better-organized and readable books (surprisingly his first book). Reading this book will teach you how to think at the table. Counting is a skill that separates the novice from the expert, and this book goes a long way towards teaching you that vital skill. This book is among my three favorite Mike Lawrence books, the other two being "Play Bridge with Mike Lawrence", and "Play a Swiss Teams of Four With Mike Lawrence". Another vital skill taught here is deduction. A simple but very useful example: as declarer if you are missing AK of a side suit, and the opening lead is something else, then either the opening leader is missing both cards or the honors must be split, else the A or K would be the natural lead (assuming neither defender has bid).

Mike Lawrence doesn't teach rules to memorize; he schools his reader in beneficial habits and patterns of thought. After reading this book (repeatedly, gaining added benefit each time), my opponents began to think we were playing bridge with glass cards.
