Organon of the Medical Art, by Samuel Hahnemann

The Organon explains why homeopathy is not just an alternative therapy, but a revolutionary system of medicine that approaches the cure of disease in a radical new way. The Organon intersects with a growing public awareness that the current variety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs may temporarily eliminate symptoms but not truly cure disease. Homeopathy goes beneath the surface to treat the whole person, strengthening the natural immune abilities and general health vs. further weakening the immune system through dependence on various medicinal drugs.

Review
A new translation of the Organon has been released. This book contains not only a new translation, but also a new format, complete with table of contents, index, and glossary, making the Organon easier to use and understand than ever before.

O'Reilly's adaptation of the Organon brings much more meaning to light. One problem with previous translations is that the reader could never be sure how accurately key words were translated and what exactly Hahnemann meant by them. To address this problem, O'Reilly provides a glossary of terms in which the German word is given along with the definition that applies to Hahnemann's usage.

Even before its publication, it has begun to garner rave reviews. George Vithoulkas, director or the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, has described it as the best translation yet, and the most comprehensive and organized information about the Organon. -- Resonance Magazine, September, 1996

Magnificent. . .a truly impressive piece of scholarship. -- Catherine R. Coulter, Author of Portraits of Homeopathic Medicines

The Organon of the Medical Art is the cornerstone of homeopathy. In it, Samuel Hahnemann takes us on a philosophical journey through the age-old questions of health, disease, and healing, speculates on the ideal system to achieve these ends, and describes the system he found which meets these criteria. Along the way he answers most questions any homeopath could have.

If one were stranded on a desert island with this book, one could develop the unique materia medica that wouold be found on the island, and learn how to apply these substances as healing agents.

This is the translation we have all been waiting for. It was worth the wait and certainly worth the price. Steven Decker and Wenda Brewster O'Reilly have done a great service for the English speakers of homeopathy. A new standard has been set. -- Homeopathy Today, December, 1996

From the Inside Flap
Conventional Western medicine, working from an allopathic basis, attempts to cure disease by opposing and suppressing its most obvious symptoms. Homeopathic medicine, however, treats the whole patient rather than isolated symptoms. Minute doses of medicines are used to combat disease by stimulating the patient's own life force.

Samuel Hahnemann, the visionary 19th centure physician who founded this system of treatment, distilled his philosophy and practice into The Organon of the Medical Art. Long recognized as one of the most important books ever written on the subject of health, disease, and medical care, the Organon has for many years been required reading for all serious students of homeopathy.

The wisdom of this seminal work is available to contemporary readers as never before, in an English version edited and annotated by Wenda Brewster O'Reilly, based on a definitive new translation by Steven Decker.

O'Reilly has produced a version of the Organon that is faithful to the nuances of Hahnemann's thought yet infinitely more accessible to contemporary readers than were previous edition. She has applied a system of chapters and sections to Hahnemann's text of numbered paragraphs, and her sidenotes, editor's footnotes, and glossary provide the context necessary for a true understanding of the author's meaning. Finally, the inclusion of an index vastly increases the volume's effectiveness as a reference tool.

With the publication of this new edition, the genius of Samuel Hahnemann is brought to light. Now practitioners and patients alike can come to a deep understanding of the revolutionary mode of medical care that is homeopathy.

Kindle edition VERY handy (but I like having the physical copy as well for notes, etc.)
By Grits
If you truly intend to study homeopathy as taught by Samuel Hahnemann all the way up to his death, you'll be well served with this edition. It is well written and researched, and full of insights. Stopping short of the 6th edition of the Organon is like thinking one has the skills to practice any profession with just an associates degree, when a PhD is available.

After being taught the flawed wisdom of those who know nothing beyond the 4th edition (which includes the vast majority of homeopaths in the U.S., apparently), this is a marvelous revelation. While other study is certainly warranted (such as good study of material Hahnemann did NOT include in the 6th edition, but did so in his Paris casebooks), this is absolutely essential reading - multiple times over. Some recommend annual reading for review.

Well researched, very thoughtfully written, with integrity.

Hahnemann - If You Value Your Health - Learn about This!
By Connie J. Wehmeyer
Obviously, this is where Homeopathy began to be released to the world - when Hahnemann wrote this book. One of our teachers said that the rule is, "for the first 30 years you are a homeopath, you need to read it once a year; after that, read it twice a year." I have read it three times and as my own experience increases I find I get different things out of it with each reading! For safe, no-side-effects healing - people need to realize homeopathy is available!!!
I like this version because, especially when I was a beginner, the footnotes helped explain some of the more complex concepts.

Organon
By P. Robbins
This is a text book used for Homeopathy students. Not a light read but a necessity for those learning Homeopathy. It was cheaper from Amazon than from other places I normally buy my books. If you are trying to learn homeopathy on your own this is not a book to do that with. Buy starter books for home use and read the basic philosophy first. Then consider taking a couple classes online. Homeopathy as a profession takes a long time but is fascinating nevertheless.

What if a handsome billionaire offered you thousands to pretend to be his girlfriend? And what if you started to believe the lie?
Jessica has never had a boyfriend, and that's just how she likes it. She's still trying to rebuild herself from a sexually abusive past, and a guy - no matter how gorgeous - would only mess up the fragile balance of her life.

Almost-billionaire Luke Pardini is gorgeous, that's for sure. He's also desperate. His dying father thinks he's too irresponsible to inherit the family estate, and Luke needs to convince his dad that he's grown up and ready to settle down with a girl. Any girl.

With five billion dollars at stake, Luke can't mess this up. But as he pretends to date Jessica, he finds himself drawn to her more than he'd like to admit. He has been hurt too many times to count, but Jessica is the one person who makes him feel safe. It could have been a Cinderella story, but both of them made a promise that their relationship was just for show, and neither of them is going to step over the line.
When Jessica's secret past emerges on the front page of the tabloids, his dad threatens to disown him if he doesn't sever ties with her. If their relationship was only a charade, the solution would be easy. But if it's not...

LOVED IT!!
By R. Tryon
I truly loved it. Like most new adult romances, both characters have painful backgrounds. Jessica had an abusive childhood and refuses to trust men. Because of his wealth and status, Luke finds it impossible to trust anyone without an non-disclosure agreement. Luke seeks Jessica from a dating website in order to fool his abusive father into thinking he's settled down.

Jessica's blunt personality had me laughing out loud but there were moments (when she's reliving painful flashbacks) that made me want to cry. She has been through a lot in her life, and even though Luke was born into privilege, so has he. The story moves REALLY quickly and I couldn't put it down. I LOVED IT!

A very enjoyable read
By Miss Heidi
I received and ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book for the most part. It is very well written and even has a plausible storyline.
An out of work girl named Jessica has reached her limits. Her English degree is getting her no where and she desperately needs to make money to pay her bills. After one bad turn follows another, she finds herself signing up for an escort service that matches girls with wealthy men to act as their dates. She is weary but desperate so she signs up and quickly gets a few responses. She does not feel comfortable with the first few, they gave her a creepy vibe. She eventually responds to one that does not freak her out. They meet, and she decides to go for it.
Her new man has a lot of issues from his childhood and does not trust anyone. She feels a kindred spirit with him because she has her own demons lurking in her closet as well. For a time, everything is alright. Then she meets his dad. He is holding Luke's inheritance over his head. They have never really talked things out, so both father and son have the wrong idea about each other.
The whole thing blows up in Jessica's face when her past comes back to haunt her. Luke goes running for the money, and Jessica is left to pick up the pieces. Or does she?
The reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5, is because I was a little let down with the ending. There was room for more of an awakening for Luke, and the rest of the story was so well written that I was disappointed in the quickness to the ending. It would have been better if the reader was left feeling that Luke really learned anything. It did not feel that was the case. But all in all it is a very entertaining quick read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes when the kids who had it hard come out ahead.

Rags to Riches and so much more...wonderful!
By Chasmmm
A new author for me and I'm simply delighted to have discovered the story of Jessica and Luke so well told by Miss Waltz.

Our heroine comes from a tough place and every choice she makes in her life is a reflection of her difficult past. Still, her hard heart melts and freezes and melts yet again for a man who is forced to make his own hard choices.

Does he choose a safe and secure future, or will he risk it all for a love he cannot deny? Ha! Well, I'm not saying anymore except that the book finishes well without any dangling bits...and I'm left with a happy glow, hoping that this author won't take too long until her next book. If it's anything like this one, then it'll be on my insta-buy list.

Highly, highly, full heartedly recommended!

William Blair (1876 1970), in his first term of missionary service, was at the centre of the great revival of 1907, and his account of this and the events leading up to it forms the first part of the book. Blair includes a thrilling description of how the gospel first came to Korea.

The account is then taken up by his son-in-law, Bruce Hunt (1903 92) born in Pyengyang, now the capital of North Korea who shows how the revival was followed by a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists. During his forty-eight years of missionary service in Korea, Hunt personally knew many of the Korean Christian martyrs.

This new edition of The Korean Pentecost has been completely re-typeset, and includes twelve additional illustrations.

A Must Read for all Korean-American Christians
By Jin Chung
As one who has grown up in the Korean-American church, I have always been curious about the foundings of Christianity in Korea. This is an excellent, first-hand account of the work of the first Korean missionaries during the early 1900s. It also contains incredible descriptions of the sufferings endured during the Japanese occupation and the subsequent Korean War. I found it to be quite inspirational.

A Moving Title
By Jimmy R. Reagan
Here is a volume coming back into print where I had heard rumors of its being outstanding. By missionaries William Blair and Bruce Hunt, this book covers the first 60 years of the Gospel coming into Korea. The title “The Korean Pentecost And The Sufferings Which Followed” gives a hint of what you will discover here. It is hard to comprehend so much happening in 60 years and that the ministries of two missionaries went through it all. What the reader gets through it all is a strengthening of faith, the amazement of seeing God’s hand at work, and the inspiration of others serving our Lord through tribulation and even death.

The authors well tell a story of the preparation for the Gospel in Korea before Mr. Blair arrived. The story of the seed sown by Robert Thomas in 1865 in chapter 3 is one you will never forget once you read it. It moved me in a way nothing has in a long time.

Then the work is described until in 1907 the Lord graciously sent revival. It is so compelling to read of real revival, what it looks like, and what transpired. Negatives as are present in any revival were not hidden, but they were few. As you read you will catch yourself praying: “Lord, send such a revival today.”

The second half of the book tells of the sufferings that came next over several decades, first at the hands of the Japanese, then from the Communists. Amazingly, the work of the Lord continued to grow though sufferings reached horrific levels. The book was never about gratuitous violence, but just enough to explain what happened. What says more in the reader’s mind is the calm, pure dedication to Christ of those who suffered. When we have no idea of what we may face, it is good to read of what can be true in Christ in the worst of times.

The authors were humble and made the stories about the Korean Christians, yet I believe I discovered two more Christian heroes in them. This is the kind of story that needs to be in every home. More than merely biography or history, it is a gripping portrait of what Christianity should be.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Find out why Korean Christians are passionate about Jesus
By James Cha
One of the best accounts available on what happened at the critical period in the history of the Church of Korea...how God poured out the Holy Spirit upon our people to consecrate them and also to prepare them for the persecution to come.

Moral Time, by Donald Black

Conflict is ubiquitous and inevitable, but people generally dislike it and try to prevent or avoid it as much as possible. So why do clashes of right and wrong occur? And why are some more serious than others? In Moral Time, sociologist Donald Black presents a new theory of conflict that provides answers to these and many other questions.

The heart of the theory is a completely new concept of social time. Black claims that the root cause of conflict is the movement of social time, including relational, vertical, and cultural time--changes in intimacy, inequality, and diversity. The theory of moral time reveals the causes of conflict in all human relationships, from marital and other close relationships to those between strangers, ethnic groups, and entire societies. Moreover, the theory explains the origins and clash of right and wrong not only in modern societies but across the world and across history, from conflict concerning sexual behavior such as rape, adultery, and homosexuality, to bad manners and dislike in everyday life, theft and other crime, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Americanism, witchcraft accusations, warfare, heresy, obscenity, creativity, and insanity. Black concludes by explaining the evolution of conflict and morality across human history, from the tribal to the modern age. He also provides surprising insights into the postmodern emergence of the right to happiness and the expanding rights of humans and non-humans across the world.

Moral Time offers an incisive, powerful, and radically new understanding of human conflict--a fundamental and inescapable feature of social life.

Review

"Reading Donald Black is like reading Isaac Newton doing sociology. Clear, fundamental principles underlie the flux of particularities in which we live. In his previous work on law, crime, and morality, Black laid out the geometry of social space and showed how your morality depends on your location in social space. Now he sets the social universe in motion: Conflict is caused by movements of social time, with faster changes across bigger distances causing more severe conflict. Especially striking is Black's geometry of postmodernity, where individuals are intimate with no one but themselves, while media-connected to a global diversity of distant relationships; the result is self-conflict and self-therapy, together with a very abstract altruism toward everyone and everything. This is Donald Black's masterwork of sociological theory." --Randall Collins, Dorothy Swaine Thomas Professor of Sociology, University of Pennsylvania

"Moral Time is a masterpiece which involves a most effective blending of sociological theory with world ethnographic data. As a very well written and highly engaging treatment, this book sees conflict as an ongoing process that is central to human life, and has the great strength of dealing with abstract theory at the same time that it brings in rich and vivid ethnographic detail, drawn from modern and nonliterate societies alike. Black's book will be a milestone in the study of moral behavior." --Christopher Boehm, Professor of Anthropology and Biological Sciences, University of Southern California

"Donald Black has devoted his brilliant career to developing a pure sociology that is independent of psychological, biological, or any other type of individual influences. Moral Time, a stunning theoretical and empirical synthesis of all forms of conflict, culminates his efforts. It is an instant sociological classic." --Allan V. Horwitz, Board of Governors Professor of Sociology, Dean for the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Rutgers University

"With his typical boldness, Black has produced another classic. Moral Time is his attempt at a general theory of conflict, and he succeeds admirably." --Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books

"This is a great book, on par with or exceeding the value of Black's other classics, The Behavior of Law and The Social Structure of Right and Wrong... No amount of praise can adequately describe the respect it deserves... Moral Time represents a milestone contribution to our understanding of the wellsprings of human conflict."--International Criminal Justice Review

"Black extends his early work on social conflict by developing a new concept of social time, arguing that the root cause of conflict is the movement of social time, including relational, vertical, and cultural time." --Law & Social Inquiry

"Moral Time is an astonishing and audacious book, proposing a theory of all conflict at all times in all places. It is, quite simply, required reading for all serious students of violence, conflict, and morality." --Comptes Rendus

About the Author

Donald Black is University Professor of the Social Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is the author of six books, including The Behavior of Law, Sociological Justice and The Social Structure of Right and Wrong.

Basic Black
By L. King
Professor Black, who is known for a school of thought he calls "pure sociology", proposes that aberrant behaviour occurs due to stress caused by change across 3 dimensions: intimacy, hierarchical relations (stratification) and diversity, either too much or too little of each. The last category is refined further into traditional/non-traditional, race/homogeneity, and innovation (in art, science, culture) vs sameness. In each section of this relatively short book (152 pages with an additional 160 pages of references) he introduces his terms and then gives extensive and interesting examples or how changes in status create conflict between different members of a society.

The examples come from a large variety of human cultures and the book is impressive on this basis alone - there's behaviour considered normal in any one culture that would offend in many others. However, as to the theory itself I remain unconvinced and though the number of examples is overwhelming he has not entirely made his case because he fails to consider counterexamples. For example, Black states that each of his dimensions are zero sum experiences - that if one increases intimacy with one person one reduces intimacy with another, that if one person rises (or falls) in a hierarchy that others are lowered. However if two individuals who are not in love with anyone fall in love there is a net increase in intimacy. Black argues that having children reduces intimacy between partners, which sounds like sour grapes, but (in my experience) it changes the nature of that intimacy and ultimately increases one's capacity to love. The same can be true of wealth - if one creates a new product or method, or creates a piece of art, then that may enrich the originator but there is also the possibility of enriching countless others. Whereas Prof. Black tries to give his theory the aura of hard science by using the analogy of a temporal dimension and a conservation law, IMV the zero-sum hypothesis aspect fails because he is unable to assign a numeric scale to the degree of difference or the rate of change. If one can't measure then one cannot declare a balance of zero.

However the notion that changes in social distance is more likely to cause conflict than actual distance is very attractive though he might have taken this further by looking into the rate of change as a factor. Great examples, though some are just interesting and don't relate to the theory. in many cultures (the middle Ages in Europe, the American South vis a vis blacks, the Qing Dynasty in China, the Zapotec Indians of Mexico to name a few) there were written and unwritten codes the made it a crime to act "uppity", either in the presence of one's social "betters" or, as in the case of and egalitarian group such union workers, being too enthusiastic or productive. Inuit, Botswana Bushmen and the Buid of Malaysia are all highly egalitarian, disapproving of those with greater success in a hunt. In Andalusia Spain being a peeping tom is considered a crime of over familiarity - men apparently will do it in groups for protection, but males close to the victim will liken it to rape and feel justified in reacting violently. Pueblo Indians would execute those who would reveal their ritual secrets - overexposure - but consider the US government imprisons and has executed spies for similar reasons.

Because of the focus on negative rather than positive conflict an outsider might despair at the human condition. However what I find more plausible is that Black's theories may serve as framework for exceptional cases of overreaction. At the very end Black advocates for a global morality as a higher plane of existence. It's an attractive article of faith, but not well enough argued.

I'm undecided as yet on the long term value of his sociology but the writing is interesting enough to give it further consideration. The fascinating anthropology brings my rating up to 4*.

Moral Time changes everything
By James Tucker
What do crime, law, racism, witchcraft, the Ten Commandments, bad manners, virtue, LSD trips, economic success, and insanity have in common? In MORAL TIME, Donald Black shows how all of these diverse behaviors, ideas, and prohibitions (and many, many more) represent either movements or attempts to limit movements in "social time," a newly discovered dimension of social reality that reflects the dynamic fluctuation of relational, vertical, and cultural space. No other social scientific theory explains more with less. And no other social scientific theory is illustrated with such fascinating examples from across history and around the world. MORAL TIME is an intellectual feast and a captivating read for specialists (including sociologists, criminologists, psychologists, and philosophers) as well as general readers.

The sociological nature of morality
By Bradley Campbell
MORAL TIME addresses an issue at the heart of sociology, criminology, and related fields: why moral conflict occurs, why anything is defined as deviant or criminal. The answer is that movements of social time cause conflicts. SOCIAL TIME, in Black's terminology, refers to fluctuations of SOCIAL SPACE, which itself consists of fundamental sociological properties such as intimacy, stratification, and diversity. Conflict is thus the result of changes in intimacy (such as when someone begins or ends a new relationship), stratification (such as when someone obtains or loses a job), and diversity (such as when someone accepts a new religion or rejects an old one). And bigger and faster changes cause more conflict. Rape, for example, is a sudden increase in intimacy. It is deviant, and a rape by a stranger is even more deviant - punished more severely - since a greater increase in intimacy is involved.

MORAL TIME thus offers a framework for explaining both the occurrence of conflict (when people define something as deviant) and the severity of conflict (how deviant deviant behavior is). It also offers a framework for classifying deviance. All deviant behaviors - from crimes to bad manners - are movements of social time. Not only rape, but trespass, incest, masturbation, voyeurism, nudity, adultery, and lying involve changes in intimacy. Robbery, slander, homicide, insubordination, and even success involve changes in stratification. Heresy, blasphemy, proselytizing, and cross-dressing involve changes in diversity. Black examines these offenses (and many more) in light of the theory. The result is an amazingly wide-ranging cross-cultural and historical account of crime and deviance - one that addresses such seemingly disconnected topics as the incest taboo, Jim Crow laws in the early 20th century American South, the Holocaust, the belief in the "evil eye" in many tribal societies, the music of Kurt Cobain, the modern human rights movements, and much more. Sociologists, criminologists, and anyone interested in conflict and morality should find MORAL TIME valuable.

untitled INTRODUCTION

The future ain’t what it used to be.
—Yogi Berra

We sat down in the meeting room with our hot coffee. Outside was a bitter-cold north European winter morning. In came our new client and we shook hands. “Thanks for visiting,” he said. “First, you should know that our product group is not large, maybe only eighty developers.”

We once met a group adopting agile development that was not sure if they could grow to very large-scale development: 12 people.

People have different scales in mind regarding ‘large.’ To some it means only 50 people or even less. To others, much more. We define a large product 1 group as one whose members’ names you could not remember if you were all together in a room. We work typically with single-product groups in the range of 100–500 people that are adopting Scrum, lean principles, and agile development practices, usually on software-intensive embedded systems. So by this definition—at least with our limited memories—this is the realm of ‘large.’

On to our key recommendation: After working for some years in the domains of large, multisite, and offshore development, we have distilled our experience and advice down to the following: Don’t do it.

There are better ways to build large systems than with many developers in many places. Rather, build a small group of great developers and other talents that can work together in teams, pay them well, and keep them together in one place with product management or whoever acts as the voice of the customer.

But of course you are still going to do large, multisite, or offshore development. This is because your existing system is already structured that way, or because—in the case of large groups—there is the mindset that “big systems need lots of people.” We regularly coach groups that ask, “How can we calculate how many people we will need?” Our suggestion is, “Start with a small group of great people, and only grow when it really starts to hurt.” That rarely happens.

Since large, multisite, and offshore development is going to happen, we would like to share what we have tried or seen at the intersection of these domains with lean and agile product development principles and practices. 2

Thinking and Organizational Tools

When Bas was a member of the leadership team of a large product group, he frequently (in meetings) asked, “Why do we have this policy? ... What will happen to the organizational system if we do that?” Months later a member of the team told Craig, “It drove me nuts to keep hearing those questions. But later, I appreciated it.” Bas wasn’t trying to be annoying; he was trying to suggest and encourage systems thinking—a thinking tool (1) to consider the deeper dynamics of the development system as a whole, (2) to understand how a system became the way it is, and (3) to reconsider assumptions underlying the existing organization.

When people are introduced to Scrum with its short timeboxed development iterations, they first see it as a localized practice to incrementally grow a product in small manageable steps, with learning and corrective actions toward a goal. Consequently, people will say, “Oh, ‘agile’ doesn’t affect me; that’s a development practice.” But there is a bigger picture and a potential higher-level learning loop beyond the lower-level development learning cycle: a learning organization of people that repeatedly re-examine the structures and policies that define and surround agile product development. The result of adopting Scrum or lean principles in very large product groups inevitably leads to this higher-level organizational learning challenge.

Example: Consider an enterprise whose R&D division tries to be more adaptive by adopting Scrum. The Sales division continues in their old mode: Maximize personal commissions and quarterly sales by promising the moon and the stars to customers, combined with almost boundless optimism for what “our great people in R&D can do.” Faced with unattainable ‘commitments’ R&D did not themselves design or make, R&D is then blamed for not meeting “our promises,” and it is concluded that “Scrum doesn’t really help.”

If this were a book about adopting Scrum only in one small 20-person single-product group within a large enterprise, systems thinking and organizational tools would be interesting but non-vital topics. But they are vital to a successful adoption when Scrum is being scaled to a 400-person single-product group, probably within a larger R&D organization in the thousands that is also making the transition, with deep connections to the Sales and Delivery groups, and constrained by traditional Human Resource and Enterprise Governance policies on team structures, reporting, measurement, milestones, contracts, and rewards.

Consequently, this book suggests that one cornerstone for large-scale Scrum and agile development is people who learn and apply various thinking tools, including (but not limited to) systems thinking, mental-model awareness, lean thinking, queueing theory, and recognition of false dichotomies. 3

With those thinking tools in place, it will become increasingly clear that the existing organizational design inhibits flow of value, leading to pressure for redesign. Hence, this book suggests a second cornerstone of organizational tools, including feature teams, requirement areas, and many other changes in structure, process, task, people, and rewards.

ACTION TOOLS

In parallel with adopting thinking and organizational tools, many action tools—specific development practices—help the product group get going on large, multisite, and offshore agile development. The effective use of these action tools—shared in the companion Practices book—is somewhat dependent on organization redesign. Many practices can be tried without deeper structural change, but constraints on benefit will be felt.

So the tools in this book could be seen as prerequisites for the actions tools of the companion book. Yet in reality, practices will be adopted first—because that is where people want to start. And that will eventually invite a look back at thinking and organizational tools.

We suggest that coaches and other change agents involved in the adoption of large-scale Scrum or lean development acquaint themselves early with thinking and organizational tools, while in parallel helping to introduce action tools. At some point the situation will be ripe—people will be ready—for a turn in the discussion from “How do we do large-scale continuous integration?” to “Do existing HR policies prevent real teams?” and “What is flow of value and what inhibits it in our organizational design?”

EXPERIMENTS: TRY... AND AVOID...

Scrum emphasizes empirical process control; there is too much complexity and variability for a cookbook approach to processes for development. Therefore, the tools in both books are presented as a series of tips that start with Try... or Avoid... to suggest experiments, nothing more. They certainly may not work in your circumstance. The approach both in Scrum and in the lean thinking practice of kaizen is to first inspect and grasp the existing situation. Then, second, to adapt with new improvement experiments. The attitude of endless experimentation is vigorously encouraged in lean thinking; perhaps the only bad process-improvement experiment is the one not tried. At Toyota, Taiichi Ohno—arguably the key contributor to lean thinking—would visit an area and inspect any written standards document. If it was covered with dust or otherwise not recently changed, he would grow quite impassioned and urge people to always evolve their ‘standards.’

In Scrum this inspect-and-adapt (experiment) cycle repeats every two- or four-week timeboxed iteration as long as the product exists. And in lean thinking, this continuous experimentation and improvement cycle applies both to individual products and to the enterprise as a whole.

LIMITATIONS

There is still much for us to learn about these domains. What we have written here and in the companion book reflects our current (limited) experience and understanding, which we hope will evolve in the coming years. For example, although we have lived for some years in China and India, we feel we have barely scratched the surface in terms of our multicultural experience and insight in relation to offshore and multisite agile development. Nevertheless, our sincere wish is that these tips are of some value to you. We welcome further insights and stories from our readers.

Large-scale Scrum can influence almost all aspects of a product-centric enterprise. To keep the scope of this material manageable and because of our limited experience in some of these areas, we bounded or deferred subjects that are worthy of more discussion. These include:

  • budgeting and finance
  • sales
  • product development not involving any software
  • marketing
  • deployment/delivery
  • hardware development
  • field support

Essentially, this book is relevant to general-purpose product development. Scrum and lean product development are not limited to software systems NT86. However, the bias is toward software-intensive systems (usually embedded) because of our background and because of the ever-growing ubiquity of software in everyday devices, from washing machines to shoes.

Especially in this book we dissect some assumptions and policies in traditional organizations that inhibit flow of value and effective teams. This analysis may come across as startling or challenging at times. We do not mean to give offense, but organizational redesign to support lean and agile development will not happen without increased scrutiny of traditional assumptions and increased transparency. Organizational change can also lead to displacement of talented people from old roles. As in Toyota, we encourage finding new areas of contribution for people within a company—both because skilled people deserve this, and because otherwise it inhibits change.

With both books combined pushing over 700 pages, we regret that we could not write or think better to make the subject of large...smaller.

On to thinking tools...

Be Agile/Lean Rather Than Do Agile/Lean
By Methods & Tools Software Development Magazine
This book is a classic example of the fact that it is better to teach somebody to fish than to give him fish. It emphasizes that it is important to "be agile" more than to "do agile". Approaches like Scrum or Lean are more frameworks to think about continuous improvement than tools that should be applied blindly like cooking recipes. The book will therefore tell you that "large-scale Scrum is Scrum" or that lean is not just kanban or waste reduction. The first part of the book is focused on thinking tools (systems thinking, lean thinking, queueing theory) that are presented with software project management related examples. Those who are looking for practical advice should not believe that the book remains only at the conceptual level. The authors distill many "try..." and "avoid..." recommendations that will help you implement agile and lean ideas in your organization. The second part of the book is devoted to organizational tools and the final chapter proposes frameworks to adapt Scrum to larger contexts.

This book is a must for those who believe that software development project management goes beyond the simple application of "silver bullet" recipes. It is a rich source of both thinking and practical content that is well suited for non-linear reading. A very good "Scrum primer" chapter at the end of the book will provide an introduction for those who are not familiar with this approach and a large number of "recommended readings" items will allow readers to explore more in details each concept.

You need to read this book if you want to do a successful agile transition
    By Andrea Heck
Listening to Bas Vodde's speech about "the trouble with component teams" at the Stockholm Scrum Gathering 2008, I was amazed. From the participants' reactions, you could easily hear and see when someone recognized his or her own project: The troubles he described seemed too familiar. Yet most real big software development organization seems to be facing them, even on their way to getting agile, if the development teams are still organized according to architectural components. He also could explain with a really practical background why and how these problems would be solved by having agile cross-functional feature teams. These insights can be found with much more detail in the "Feature Teams" chapter of this wonderful book.

Craig Larman and Bas Vodde have put together lots of valuable background information on lean thinking applied to software projects. The book describes how agility is based in the Toyota values and principles, as well as in systems thinking and queuing theory. But it is far away from being a theoretical book, since it contains lots of practical experiences from the authors and other people introducing Scrum into large organizations. A big emphasis is on understanding that the pillars of lean are "Respect for people" and "Continuous improvement" and that the lean principles and the methods with which they are supported will not work alone, without the rest of the framework. As well as you cannot "do agile" but only "be agile". These are things frequently misunderstood, especially in large companies. Suddenly you are invited to dozens of daily "Scrum" standup meetings held by managers who have heard that daily standups make you agile.

A chapter I particularly like is the "Organization" chapter. How can you form an organization around agile development teams? How should the product development organization above the teams be? What needs to be changed in the other departments? What happens to phases and milestones? How will the HR strategies be adapted, how will budgeting work? - Very valuable also the top ten organizational impediments they and other agile development experts found, e.g. "considering learning a waste of time and money". You do not get all the answers, yet many, and the right questions.

In few words: A lot of helpful insights and tools that you estimate if you want to do a successful agile transition. Lots of thanks to Bas and Craig! - I am looking forward to the announced companion book "Practices for Scaling Lean and Agile".

Great tools for those adopting agile on large teams
    By Ade Miller
While supposedly on vacation and sitting on a beach in Jamaica I finally got around to reading a couple of books that haven't quite made it to the top of the stack. This is largely thanks to the lack of slack and impending annual performance reviews. More on that later...

In the meantime what of Scaling Lean & Agile Development: Thinking and Organizational Tools for Large-Scale Scrum?

It turns out this wasn't quite what I was expecting. Which, in this case, is a good thing. Much of the nuts and bolts of large-scale development will be covered in an--as yet unpublished--companion volume; "Practices for Scaling Lean & Agile Development: Large, Multisite and Offshore Product Development with Large-Scale Scrum".

Why is this a good thing? Well, the second volume will focus on the nuts and bolts and the temptation would for many potential readers--myself included--to skip the theory and go straight to the applied. A bad idea when the central theme of the first volume is that large-scale agile adoption has effects throughout the organization. The development team and day-to-day development activities are just the tip of the iceberg.

The first section of the book focuses on thinking tools; Systems Thinking, Lean Thinking, Queueing Theory. Which is typical of the book's approach of giving the readers the tools to "Be agile rather than do agile". This makes a lot of sense. Large organizations are complex and unique, attempting to author a one size fits all recipe for agile adoption would seem unwise. But if you're expecting a book containing a prescriptive set of recipes then you'll be disappointed.

The second section covers the organizational tools starting off with Feature Teams and the inherent problems with component teams. The discussion expands to cover many other topics; building teams in place of managing resource pools, rewarding teams as opposed to individuals, a Beyond Budgets approach rather than a conventional annual budgeting approach. All these come into play when managing large scale organizational change to a more agile approach.

It's only in the last chapter that the authors put it all together and discuss two example Scrum Frameworks for large organizations. They also go to great lengths not to be prescriptive with "Try..." and "Avoid..." sections replacing "Do..." and "Don't...". Much of the details will be covered in the companion book.

There's a lot of material presented here and it leaves the reader with the somewhat daunting task of figuring out how to turn their organization inside out. Especially when considering something the size of Microsoft's Developer Division (of which p&p is part). There are some possible reasons for this:

There's an inflection point at some size/complexity scale where this approach breaks down.
Visual Studio's huge legacy, architecture, code base and long established engineering culture needs more change than I can imagine in order to map it onto the full Feature Team approach they describe (I'm not very imaginative).
The road from were we are today and the approach Bas and Craig describe is longer than I'm prepared to accept.
In some respects much of what we tried to do in Visual Studio Tools for Office 2008 maps onto their Product, Product Area and Feature Teams approach and we had moderate successes. I'll be giving my well-thumbed to various people in the Division's engineering team and see what they think. It's full of good ideas and definitely worth reading I'm waiting for volume 2.

    THE existentialist play
    By Evan
As an actor/aspiring playwrite/existentialist I figured this was right up my alley. It was. I borrowed No Exit a while ago, and read it straight through twice (once during an important math class, and later during chemestry). I'm buying my own copy now. Don't just read this (or anything...especially plays) only once! Do you think Paul McCartney only listened to Stevie Wonder once? (wink to anyone who can identify this quote) This is a great play, even if you're not into reading plays, or not into philosophy. The Bauhaus theatre dictum of form following function is great to keep in mind, as this is similar to didactic theatre. The post before mine is a bit misleading in writing it off as 'weird' and an unconventional view of hell. It could be both things if you want to stay in the shallow end all of your life. No Exit is best read with an understanding of the anti-naturalism, but this is only to understand why it's 'weird' and is not nessesary. I don't want to tell you how to interperate the play or anything, so I won't go into why it is not an unconventional view of hell. If you want to know, or discuss the play (or pretty much any other play/theory) IM me on AIM: Digestingtrevor or Email me at Don't_spam_spit@the-cowboy.com Just remove 'don't spam' from it. Know also Sartre was not primarilly a playwrite. He was a prominant existentialist philosopher/essayist, but turned to playwriting (thank god[though he won't respond!]) as a new medium for expression. He's also quite good as a playwrite for a philosopher! REALLY good! It's great to be frustrated with the characters and really feel like you are going insane. (possibly the birth of reality TV? it's funny how much it is like the real world.) This is a GREAT read for the Arist(of all mediums),philosopher, and the person who just wants to read something cool. I suggest this book to all different types of people, and they all love it. You can easilly read this with no desire to put any interperative thought into it, and love it just as much as if you want to delve into it's infinate levels of meaning and relevance. It is both entertaining and enlightening.
