About the Author
Gary Colombo is professor of English at Los Angeles City College. He has published Mind Readings: An Anthology for Writers (2002), and with Bonnie Lisle and Sandra Mano, Frame Work: Culture, Storytelling and College Writing (1997), both for Bedford/St. Martins.�Robert Cullen is professor of English at San Jose State University. He supervises Teaching Associates in the university’s lower-division writing sequence and has taught a wide range of courses in American literature, American Studies, composition, and pedagogy.�Bonnie Lisle teaches in the UCLA Writing Programs. With Gary Colombo and Sandra Mano, she is the author of Frame Work: Culture, Storytelling, and College Writing (Bedford/St. Martins, 1997).

Rent, don't buy.

Rented this book for a college freshman English course. Book was well organized and contained more than enough readings and discussion/writing prompts. Unfortunately, this really appears to be more of a worldview textbook than a writing textbook. There were many selections and writing prompts that were geared toward exploring homosexuality, gender issues and same sex marriage. These also also included visual images to prompt thought. When searching the other sections of the same course, most of the faculty actually chose writing and rhetoric textbooks. (that is what one would expect a college composition course to use.) Decided to switch sections since I was seeking (and paying for) a true English composition course. Amazon was great about refunding the rental fee.

In a bind i had to rent this book digitally in order to have it on hand for a trip i was on. However without disclaimer they remove several key sections of the text used by many professors. This digital book is a rip off and a waste of time and money and i regret it completely.

The best English 101 book on the market

Now that I have read numerous textbooks used in English 101 classes, I feel I can safely say that Rereading America is the best one out there. I was going to swtich to another book to use in my classes, but no other book was as good a spring board for students to write about. While some students loved it or hated it, the book provided a good jumping off point for students to write. One negative though is that the 6th edition is better than the 8th edition. It is longer and has slightly better essays.

Discussing lineation, he explains that lines serve important rhetorical functions in First Isaiah, but the absence of lineated manuscripts from antiquity makes it necessary to defend proposed line divisions using criteria such as parallelism, rhythm, and syntax. He examines poetic structure, and highlights that parallelism and enjambment create a sense of progression between individual lines, which are tightly joined to form couplets, triplets, quatrains, and occasionally even longer groups. Later, Dr Couey treats imagery and metaphor in First Isaiah. A striking variety of images-most notably agricultural and animal imagery-appear in diverse contexts in these poems, often with rich figurative significance.

Kevin Baker's Dreamland is the kind of novel that begins with a two-page list of characters and ends with a nine-page glossary. In between, this vast, sprawling carnival of a book takes in Coney Island and the Lower East Side, midgets and gangsters, Bowery bars and opium dens, even Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. It is, in short, a novel as big, lively, and ambitious as Gotham itself, and if you can stomach some of the more garish local color, it's every bit as much fun. Set at the turn of the century, in a New York as polyglot as any city on earth, Dreamland opens with an act of misplaced--and very stupid--compassion. Eastern European immigrant Kid Twist intervenes when villainous gangster Gyp the Blood is on the verge of murdering a young newsboy for sport. But surprise: that's no street urchin--that's Trick the Dwarf, self-proclaimed Mayor of Little City and a Coney Island tout, who dresses up as a boy, he says, as "a way I had of leaving myself behind." Trick hides Kid Twist in the hind parts of the Tin Elephant Hotel; Kid Twist meets Esther Abramowitz, impoverished seamstress and labor agitator, then falls in love; Trick woos Mad Carlotta, a three-foot beauty who thinks she's the Empress of Mexico; and Freud and Jung sail for America, where they squabble about psychoanalysis. E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime (LJ 7/75) was a dazzling tour de force, particularly his imaginative mingling of the fictional and historical in his story of turn-of-the-century New York. Occupying the same time and space and employing the same device of mixing the historical and the fictional, Baker's Dreamland will inevitably be compared to Ragtime, but it is very different?more personal and less political. Narrated by a diverse group of characters?two Jewish gangsters, a seamstress, a whore, a Tammany Hall politician, Sigmund Freud, a dwarf from Coney Island?the novel looks at the ways we see ourselves, often distorted as if through a funhouse mirror. Events like a garment workers' strike, the gangland murder of a talkative gambler, and the fire that burned Coney Island's Dreamland swirl together in this larger-than-life story of people trying to understand themselves in a New York that seems out of control. With its fluid narrative and finely realized characters, Dreamland belongs in most libraries.

Every bit as entertaining as "The Alienist."

After I had read "The American Century" and found that Kevin Baker was responsible for the bulk of the research on that fine book, I wanted to read his new work of historical fiction, "Dreamland." I'm glad I did. Not since I read Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" a few years ago, have I enjoyed a novel as much as this one. Baker is able to bring the reader nearly to tears as he details the travails of young women trying to make it from day to day in New York, either as workers in one of the sweatshops on the lower east side or, unfortunately as one of the prostitutes every night putting her life in jeapordy in the Tenderloin or on the other mean streets of that heartless, corrupt, and sad, very sad city. The section detailing the days spent in jail by the striking women is especially chilling. The inclusion of Freud and Jung is compelling not so much for the interpretation of their work, but rather for the hint of progress that would be made in the years to come in the field of psychoanalysis. Other critics have harped on their inclusion in this work, but I found their conversations stimulating. How they end up in Dreamland at the end of the book with the other colorful and larger than life characters in this inspired work-Kid Twist, Gyp The Blood, the Mad Carlotta, Esther, Trick the Dwarf, Tim Sullivan-is deliciously presented. I thought that the inclusion of Frances Perkins as the sole upper class liberal fighting vainly with limited success to stem the tide of worker abuse allowed the author to speak through her character and graphically describe the carnage enveloping the poor young ladies of that era. No wonder FDR made her his only Secretary of Labor. I thought it ironic that a scant thirty years after the time of this novel, this same age group of women, imprisoned in 1912 for having the gall to ask for a 54 hour work-week, formed the nucleus of the manufacturing force that produced all the armament that saved our world from tyranny and made it safe for democracy during World War II. It is never fair to give away the ending of a book, and I won't. But, trust me, you'll love it!

Terrific read!

This is not a light, summer read. This is a hypnotic, huge evocation of a terrible time in the history of New York City, populated with downtrodden workers, murderous thugs, treacherous politicians, every sort of exploitation and crime. Also, the first, trepidacious steps toward reform. And, of course, the obligatory aliens (in this case, alienists) in the persons of Freud and Jung, to bring a European perspective to the scene. An amazing work of historical fiction by Kevin Baker.

Fragmented

What do a dwarf, a factory girl, Freud, and some gangsters have in common? Very little. In general, I don't mind alternating narration but in this case it was a burden. Jumping between characters and time lines, even within the chapter, it was unclear what was happening when and to whom. The storylines are supposed to intertwine, but there wasn't enough connection between the stories to make it a success. Dreamland is another novel with potential that needed more polish.

Nice Entertainment Value on the Bundle

This series will get you thinking - the author does a great job of getting you inside the head (pun intended) of his characters, and what I found refreshing for this one was he doesn't try to overwhelm you with the future technology or situations in a post-apocalyptic world: we've all read SF where you want to call b.s. on a futuristic technology but in this case it's believable, and you can wrap your arms around it and understand it. The action scenes are fairly realistic, and you will find your pulse racing (mine did) at various times as you feel as if you are right there.

I originally picked this up for just 99 cents vs. the regular price of each standalone book of $3.99 each or about $20 total. I certainly received a lot more than 99 cents worth of entertainment value. If you're looking for a change of pace from a lot of the sci-fi out there today, I'd recommend giving this series a shot.

Fantastic, but need my red pen!

I want to say first off that this is a terrific series. However, whomever transcribed this to the digital ebook copy needs to learn basic editing skills. I found a lot of spelling errors and missing spaces. This is a UK English series, but has nothing to do with the spelling I am talking about. I found silly things such as rom instead of from or missing spaces between words. Things a first time editor would find easily. A revamp on this would be a great asset to the writer in the long run!

All the cyberpunk you can ever wish for

In a post-apocalyptic world, what’s left of humanity lives in a single domed city run by the shadowy Family. Periodically, the population is culled through the death lottery. All is running smoothly until Jerry Cardle, the man in charge of the lottery finds his name on the list. He discovers that a malevolent artificial intelligence has invaded the city’s systems, which could spell doom for everyone.
With seven days left to live, Cardle must get to the bottom of whatever is going on, but he has to go entirely off the grid to do it.
Code Breakers: Alpha by Colin F. Barnes is a well-written science fiction story of a dystopian future, complete with all the techie bells and whistles one might expect from the genre. In addition, the author does a good job of creating the characters who might inhabit such a dismal future.
Great reading. Don't miss it!

About the Author

Prasanta Kumar Basu retired as a professor from the University of Calcutta in 2011 and is now a UGC Basic Scientific Research Faculty Fellow at the university. Dr. Basu has published roughly 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include low-field and hot electron transport and scattering mechanisms in semiconductors and their nanostructures, semiconductor electronic and photonic devices, and optical communication. He earned a PhD in radio physics and electronics from the University of Calcutta.

Bratati Mukhopadhyay is an assistant professor in the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics at the University of Calcutta. Dr. Mukhopadhyay is a member of the IEEE and the current secretary of the IEEE Photonics Society, Calcutta Chapter. Her research interests include physics of semiconductor nanostructures, semiconductor devices and modeling, VLSI circuits, and photonics. She earned a PhD in radio physics and electronics from the University of Calcutta.

Rikmantra Basu is an assistant professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Delhi. Dr. Basu is a member of the IEEE. His research interests include semiconductor devices, electronic circuits and devices, optoelectronics and optical communication, and nanophotonics. He earned a Ph.D. in nanotechnology from the University of Calcutta.
