"When marrying someone, remember: the good gets no better, and the bad only gets worse."

I cannot think of a better way to encapsulate the great theme of this book than the headline, which I have said to a few friends who have been thinking of getting married.

A relationship is not supposed to be that difficult, and the author discards the notion that relationships are about bargaining, compromise and hard work, and instead observing the type of person the other partner is.

Everyone in the world needs to read this book because it is simple, direct and valid with actual facts and figures that can be used. The author speaks of the "honeymoon period" of a relationship, wherein the prospective partner is putting their best foot forward, but after three months, their true nature begins to reveal itself.

It is this true nature on which one should judge their perspective partner.

The author then continues with a number or easily relatable examples of situations written with a sardonic, direct tone that does not try to sell the lie that has so often been posited that one should walk into a relationship accepting flaws and ready to bargain and compromise. Instead, this book argues we should focus on the flaws because they do not get any better through the course of relationship.

If people read this book, there would simply not be that many divorces.

Book teaches you as much about you

Looked this book as it was recommended to me by friends. I thought it was going to be a guide to examining the behaviors I encountered with others. While there is of great insight and advice there, I found it much more helpful in seeing my faults and the reasons behind them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is either in, considering or has fallen out of a relationship at some point in their life. Meaning pretty much everyone.

Best book I've read on relationships

I read "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk" by the same author. When I was flipping through "How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk", it looked like the exact same book with just a different title. If it's not, then I apologize for this review.

The author introduces a RAM model which shows the sequence of steps you take which will lead to commitment. You have to do A before you do B. For example, you have to know someone before you trust someone. You have to trust someone before you get physical with someone, etc... When people are anxious for intimacy, they tend to skip over this and create a pseudo-intimacy which leads to a broken heart.

My favorite chapter is the one that deals with a person's conscience. The author warns that you cannot be someone else's conscience for them. You cannot be the angel on their shoulder that whispers to them to do the right thing. It's much better to pick someone with a healthy and consistent conscience in the first place so you don't have to worry about them mistreating you when they're out of your sight. My mom did this with my dad, always trying to keep him in line like he was her son. It didn't work. It lead to mutual disrespect and eventual divorce.

This is best book I've read on relationships and one of my favorite go-to books when I'm trying to decide if I'm moving the relationship too fast. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Brandon C. Welsh is an Associate Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University as well as a Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement at Free University in Amsterdam. His research interests focus on the prevention of crime and delinquency and evidence-based crime policy. Dr. Welsh has published extensively in these areas and is an author or editor of seven books. Born in Canada, he received his undergraduate and M.A. degrees at the University of Ottawa and his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England.

I loved this book. The author is relatively unknown here in America but his perspectives are brilliant. This book explains in clear terms the many changes we can expect to see over the next 15 to 30 years. Its a fun read that really gets you thinking.

Foe, however, sees a different story and seeks "to tell the truth in all its substance." Imaginative and provocative, but impenetrably enigmatic

This novel (novella?) is 157 pages. For the first 111 pages I was enthralled, especially as I had read Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" only two months before. FOE is J.M. Coetzee's updated twist of "Robinson Crusoe". ("Foe" was Daniel Defoe's surname at birth; he later fancified it.)

FOE is the account of an Englishwoman, Susan Barton, about what happened on the South Atlantic island where Cruso (spelled by her without an "e") and Friday were marooned and how Daniel Foe came to write their story. Years after Cruso and Friday, Susan had been shipwrecked on that same island and she spent a year there with the two men before all three were "rescued" (Cruso and Friday were taken off the island much against their wishes) by a passing English ship. Cruso died before the ship reached England and Susan resolved to tell and publish their collective story in order to make money. So she enters into an arrangement with the experienced writer Daniel Foe.

The problem is that Susan's story about what happened is rather dull. Cruso had no tools, no weaponry, no seeds, nor any writing implements, and he had not transformed the isolated isle into an English Garden of Paradise. He was not imbued with the Protestant work ethic; in truth, he was bland, rude, and somewhat unhinged. Friday was equally asocial; he pursued his own eccentric rituals and what made him even more inscrutable was the fact that his tongue had been cut out by slavers (or, Susan worries, perhaps by Cruso) so that he had no way to express himself vocally. Friday was, in modern parlance, the embodiment of "the Other". Nor had anything especially dramatic ever occurred on the island: no footprints in the sand or attacks by cannibals, for instance.

Though the entire novel is slippery, rendering absolute certitude about anything virtually impossible, I can say with some confidence that Foe found Susan's story unmarketable. Given the actual novel "Robinson Crusoe", it is reasonably safe to conclude that in Coetzee's vision, Foe took many liberties and invented many things and, significantly, he wrote Susan out of the story.

Now we enter the realm where Coetzee's commentary shoulders aside his story. First, of course, there is the matter of ignoring women in our traditional stories of the civilizing of the globe. Friday, deprived of tongue and speech, seemingly stands for some sort of comment (but what, precisely?) on imperialism and colonialism. In addition, there would seem to be comments (but what, precisely?) on language and semiotics, on freedom and slavery, on story-telling and creativity, and on truth.

The novel tantalizingly presents itself as an allegory about something(s), but it ends up being impenetrably enigmatic. That is largely because in its last 45 pages the story spirals out of control. I am left with so little idea of what Coetzee might have been driving at that I really don't care, and I rather suspect that he doesn't really know either. It is almost as if, after writing the first 111 pages, Coetzee dropped some acid before dashing off the concluding 45 pages. Whatever the reason, the last 45 pages strike me much as the dreams of a mystic lunatic and I am left feeling somewhat cheated and resentful.

I understand that FOE is thought by many to be the "archetypal postmodern" novel. I guess I am too old-fashioned.

Another Crusoe

"I am not a story, Mr. Foe. I may impress you as a story because I began my account of myself without preamble, slipping overboard into the waves and striking out for the shore. But [...] there was a life before the water [...] which makes up a story I do not choose to tell. [...] I am a free woman who asserts her freedom by telling her story according to her own desire."

The woman is Susan Barton, speaking to the writer Daniel Defoe (he added the "de" to his family name later). Rescued after being cast away on the Caribbean island, she has sought out the author to write her story and make her fortune. Her island adventure, which she tells in the first part, is a rather different version of the story that we know from ROBINSON CRUSOE. But the larger part of the book consists of a dialogue between Susan and Foe, partly in letters, partly in person, examining the themes referred to here: the nature of the writing process, the way our lives are shaped by the stories we choose to tell about them, and above all the meaning of freedom, especially as a woman or a member of a subjugated race.

Cruso (as the name is spelled here) was already on the island when Susan got there. Instead of the numerous items that Defoe will allow him to salvage from the wreck, Susan's Cruso came ashore with nothing but a knife and lives much more simply. So far from being rescued from cannibals, Friday was washed ashore with him, but he is a mute whose tongue has been cut out in childhood. At sixty, Cruso has no wish to leave the island, and when a ship does arrive to carry them away, he dies on the voyage, leaving Susan as the only witness, other than Friday who cannot speak.

Susan continues to write to Foe, even after he has been forced to flee his creditors. She takes possession of his empty house, sitting at the author's desk, writing letters that may never be delivered. But as she essentially shapes her own narrative, Defoe is simultaneously shaping hers, eventually writing her out of her own tale -- but also adding new elements as though to make a separate novel out of her, as he would later do with MOLL FLANDERS. Hence Susan's forcible objections in the quotation with which I started. Indeed, Defoe's inventions come to take surreal form, as Susan is visited by a long-lost daughter conjured from the writer's imagination in response to her grief, but bearing no resemblance to her real child. Coetzee's interest in recursive narratives has continued to the present day, as in his recent SUMMERTIME, but this 1986 novel is the most intellectually abstract of his that I have read, though fascinating in the manner of an Escher drawing.

But there are serious points behind the mind-games. Most obviously, the feminist complaint that although Susan can serve as Foe's muse, she has no control over the artistic progeny. Her castaway story will be reshaped with the relatively passive Crusoe as hero, whereas Defoe's heroines would all be fallen women. Even more interesting, for a South African author writing under Apartheid, is the silencing of Friday. Unable to speak for himself, unable even to write, Friday's existence depends entirely on those who write his story for him, and even Susan's willingness to accord him the freedom she claims for herself is valueless without the ability to give him the narrative to support it.

Though literature, films, and folklore have romanticized pirates as gallant seaman who hunted for treasure in exotic locales, David Cordingly, a former curator at the National Maritime Museum in England, reveals the facts behind the legends of such outlaws as Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, and Calico Jack. Even stories about buried treasure are fictitious, he says, yet still the myth remains. Though pirate captains were often sadistic villains and crews endured barbarous tortures, were constantly threatened with the possibility of death by hanging, drowning in a storm, or surviving a shipwreck on a hostile coast, pirates are still idealized. Cordingly examines why the myth of the romance of piratehood endures and why so few lived out their days in luxury on the riches they had plundered.

Widespread piracy began in the Western world in 1650 and ended abruptly around 1725. Cordingly, formerly on the staff of the National Maritime Museum in England, describes who became pirates (mainly volunteers who joined up when their ships were captured); what they wore (scarves or handkerchiefs around their head, just like in the movies); and how they were armed (literally, to the teeth). Pirates, says the author, were "attracted by the lure of plunder and the desire for an easy life." They were not the clean-cut heroes of the Errol Flynn films either, but cutthroat murderers. Some of the famous pirates are portrayed: Sir Francis Drake made his name by plundering silver on the Spanish Main; Sir Harry Morgan is famous for his ransom of Portobello to the President of Panama for 250,000 pesos; and Captain Kidd remains mysterious because of his buried gold and silver on Gardiners Island, near New York City. Fictitious pirates are also surveyed, such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook, and the allure they still have over us is explored. The image of the swashbuckling pirate tramps the sea decks of our imaginations-bold, brave, and rebellious-owing to countless versions of adventure classics like Treasure Island, Captain Blood, and The Black Pirate. But as Cordingly (coauthor of Pirates, Abbeville, 1992) points out in this well-written, instructive, and entertaining book, our popular view of piracy and pirates is far off the mark. The majority of 17th- and 18th-century Anglo-American pirates (the focus of Cordingly's study) were brutal men, given to drink, gambling, and casual violence. The author amply documents their viciousness in these pages. He highlights the contrast between our perceptions and the reality of pirate life and explains why piracy thrived in this period and how most pirates were hunted down and finally executed. While Cordingly breaks little new ground in this study and generously acknowledges his use of more academic works, his book is an insightful, concise, and thoroughly enjoyable portrait of the misnamed Golden Age of Piracy. Educational But With One or Two Issues

While Cordingly is clearly an excellent writer, there are a couple of things with which I struggled here. The primary one is at least a bit objective, while I am admittedly subjective in the second. First- If you read this book you get the distinct impression that each chapter was written independently, without consideration that they would be compiled into a book. The amount of redundancy tells us all we need to know about that. If the work was planned as a whole, the same facts would not surface 6-8 times.

Secondly, you really have to be infected with a form of pirate-mania to want to hear endless details about every "important?" pirate book, play, or movie ever made. For me, that was just over the top. Who cares about detailed plot lines, who the actors were, and endless minutia? To be fair, the descriptions of the book, as well as the reference to "The Romance" in the title, indicates that we have not been duped - this subject would be part of the text. Personally I had no use for it. But of course since each chapter is essentially its own self-contained college term paper, not having been built on a previous one in any great sense, you can just skip ahead. Or at least go to a place where it stops talking about the media-created "pirates".

These not-so-small nits aside, you really do learn, via the authors research of public records, what pirates were all about. The book is an easy read. It would be great to get into modern-day piracy, but that would be another book because there is no way to dovetail that with this work that describes what might be called the hey-day of piracy.

Great book, but....

I was hoping this would be more factual (I got it to help with research with a period piece I'm writing). The first chapter is more about the media written pirate and contrasting it to the reality. But it fails to give much of any real information. I'm about halfway done and the chapters carry more as you go on. If you're looking for a wide view history then this book is good. If you're looking for just facts you should make this one your second choice. His writing though is fast paced and intriguing. Definitely a good read no matter what.

Sporadically written

The chapters do not flow well, and the paragraphs within the chapters give a vast amount of illogically arranged, and seemingly irrelevant information. The author does not go into deep details of any certain pirate or ship, but rather states a general belief of pirate behavior, then rattles off 3 to 5 examples, each being one or two sentences long, and none of which are interrelated. The writing seems more like incoherent rambling than well developed arhguements. Very difficult to get interested in.

This is a "must have" for the serious investor!

I know there are 1000's of Investment books on the market, and they all cost less than this one.
But this is a "must have" if you are a serious investor.

The subjects "position sizing" and "Money management" are viewed upon by many to be boring and unimportant. But nothing could be further from the truth. When you start to dig into the potential in this book you'll never let it go Again.

The book is around 370 pages in large format pages with small letters. And I have to say that this i not an easy read. You have to be focused and concentrated and you probably will need a calculator by you site for many of the excercises. But when you have spend a couple of hours with the first two chapters I think you know why I'm thrilled.

Some of the topics in this book is:

1. Risk - the understanding of R and R-multiple.

This is the basic knowledge of how to evaluate a trade and a Trading system. If you are risking 1000 USD in one trade that equals 1 R (1 Risk unit). If your profit is 2000 USD on the trade that equals a profit of 2 R.
This is very import when you start evaluating your trades and start Building robust Trading methods.

2. Evaluation of Trading systems

Here Van Tharp introduces the concept of SQN (System Quality Number) to evalute how robust your systems and methods are. Here we use the R-multiple from the first chapter, standard deviations etc. It's not too complicated but you have to focus on these first chapters since they contain the core knowledge for the rest of the book.

Other great topics in the book are e.g.:

- Use position sizing to meet your objectives.
- Using Fixed Ration Position sizing
- How to avoid ruin
- Examination of different types of position sizing software
- Exercises to test your self after most the chapters

I'm a active trader my self. And my book shelf contains something like 3-400 Trading books and dvd's. This book is on my Top-5 and it's the book that I return to Again and Again for advice and inspiration.

This is by far the most comprehensive book on position sizing I have read, Most trading books only skim the surface of this topic

I have read all of van tharps other books, all of which are very good, but this book has not received the credit it deserves. and I cannot recommend it enough

I recently developed my own trading strategy and using some of the concepts presented in this book have managed to increase its profitability in back testing to literally 10x fold of what my original criteria were with an acceptable level of draw down.

My main criteria was (Note it is very very aggressive...)
a) Have a win loss ratio above 50%, (20x losses in a row))
b) Reward to Risk in my favour i.e. >1:1 (as high as setup will allow - tested over many trades)
c) Have a positive expectancy
d) Be profitable every year,
e) Limit the equity peak to trough maximum draw down to
