Has ways to go

While the neurology section of this review is quite good, the general critical care questions are written amateurish. Not only are some of the questions nonsensical, with obvious lack of proof reading, but some of the answers are plainly wrong. The weakest part of the book is section on Cardiovascular Physiology where above mentioned examples abound, even though the whole section only has 15 questions total. High quality, professional proofing of questions is a major problem for reviews that tackle topics where good quality data and literature are lacking, however, exhibiting this level of inaccuracy with a topic that is straightforward and quite mathematical is inexcusable.

Not ready for prime time

As another customer noted, the first half of the book is really good: That is the Neuro-critical half.The questions are well written, logical and the answers can be validated on the basis of current guidelines/data. The second half (the General critical care section) is a complete disaster. I'm trying not to be rude here, but the some of the sections are really pathetic. The respiratory section needs to be re written. These questions are far from the rigorous standards of ABMS/ABIM. The Infectious disease section would be aced by a 2nd year IM resident.
In spite of the above issues, I did think the first half of the book alone made it worth my money. For a non neurologist, this is a great starter book along with 2 books by Dr Elco Wijdicks. (Look them up on amazon.com). I would advice the author/editor to include subspecialists (Cards/Pulm/ID)on her panel to write/edit relevant sections.

I have done about half of the questions so far and find them to be a very nice review of the topics. The explanations are well written with references. Thought-provoking questions. I am a fellowship-trained neurointensivist.

Great reference

This is an awesome book! I bought it when one of my docs recommended it and I couldn't have been more happy with it. I used it to study for NBEO part 2 national boards and it was very helpful. It's also nice to have on hand in clinic to look up anything you may need to, it's usually in this book!

It will give you some pointers on which agency to contact for your area to find out what codes are required. He also discusses the different components of solar energy and how to calculate your needs to size a system. I found it a very good source of information for wanting to live a more self sustaining lifestyle

About the Author
David Clark was born June 1952 in Croydon, a London suburb. After winning a scholarship to Christ's College in Cambridge, he received his B.A. in 1973. In 1977, he got his PhD from Bristol University for work on antibiotic resistance. He then left England for postdoctoral research at Yale and then the University of Illinois. He joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University in 1981 and is now a professor in the Microbiology Department. In 1991 he visited Sheffield University, England as a Royal Society Guest Research Fellow. His research into the genetics and regulation of bacterial fermentation has been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy from 1982 till the present. He has published over 70 articles in scientific journals and graduated over 20 master s and PhD students. He is unmarried and lives with two cats, Little George, who is orange and Ralph who is mostly black and eats cardboard.

A Life Saver

I am a computer scientist and I did my Ph.D. dissertation in the area of Computational Biology. My problem was that I had no background in molecular biology (or any other kind of biology for that matter). Many conference speakers and scientific papers would leave me lost. I didn't need to be an expert in biology, but I did need to have some idea of what was going on.
This book was a Godsend for me. It is an easy read, filled with humor and drawings. But don't let that mislead you, it is also filled with a wealth of useful information, especially for a novice to the field. Reading this book will not make you a molecular biologist, but it will allow you to talk reasonably intelligently to one. I recomend this book very highly to anyone who has an interest in this field, but doesn't know much about it. It is a great stepping stone to more complex texts and papers.

Accessible introduction to a complex field

This book is advertised as a text for the lay person that can also serve as a textbook for levels ranging from high school to graduate school. Unfortunately, this is a drawback, as the book tries to be all things to all people. The book is written in a conversational style and makes use of numerous cartoon drawings in its explanations. Most of the diagrams are very helpful. However, some drawings are somewhat juvenile and cheesy with faces drawn on enzymes, for example. Extra wide margins contain definitions of words used in the adjacent text as well as occasional jokes and anecdotes. Molecular terms are redefined whenever they are used, so you can skip around in the book with no problem understanding what is being presented.

The introductory chapter compares the molecular biology revolution with the industrial revolution. The next few chapters review bacteria, basic genetics, and the molecular basis of heredity. These are followed by chapters on the basics of DNA replication, transcription, and proteins. All these fundamentals are very well covered, and the diagrams illustrate the points well.

The next few chapters review various techniques including gene transfer in bacteria, with subjects such as transformation and plasmids being well covered. There is also coverage of DNA manipulation including purification, restriction enzymes, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Other chapters concerning methodology cover PCR and DNA sequencing. There is a very good chapter on transgenics that includes micro-injection, knock-outs, and reporter genes. One chapter is devoted specifically to the techniques of molecular biology. This contains a rather brief overview of a wide array of techniques such as bandshift assays, detection systems, FACS, and RFLP that could easily have been expanded. Other chapters focus on the applied side of molecular technology with discussions of topics such as biotechnology products and forensic medicine. The book also brings the subject matter home with very good chapters on inherited diseases as well as cancer and aging, and shows how biology at the molecular level comes into play in each of these matters.

Overall, there is a strong emphasis on DNA at the expense of RNA. Similarly, there is not much information on protein analysis. Even the authors cannot keep up with the speed of the molecular biology revolution, since a number of current popular techniques, such as differential display and quantitative PCR, are only briefly mentioned or are not even included.

Overall, Molecular Biology Made Simple and Fun contains" some useful information, especially with respect to DNA techniques and applications. This book would probably be most applicable as a supplementary textbook for an introductory college class on molecular biology or as a reference guide to look up unfamiliar molecular techniques, such as ones that might be encountered in journal articles. I think it might be too advanced for high school students. I found it a fairly accessible read and very informative, and my background is in engineering and computer science, not biology, other than what I took as a college undergraduate. I highly recommend it.

Monkey see, monkey do

I am a high school science teacher starting up a new biotechnology program for our students. I have been looking for a text to supplement the curriculum that is informative, accurate and readable for high school students. This book is the best I've seen.
What makes this book so extrememly valuable is that it is eminently readable. Through humor, illustrations, examples and great graphics, the subject matter comes to life. Informative texts are worthless if no one reads them, or, if in reading them, cannot understand them! The authors have accomplished something great here and have indeed made the subject simple and fun.
I know that my high school students will be able to get something from this book. This does not mean, however, that the book is extremely basic or easy. The information presented is extensive and accurate. It is the way the book is written that will allow readers to absorb more information. Here is an example paragraph from the introduction to Chapter 9, Messing About with DNA:
"Suppose we want to create our very own monster by genetic engineering. How do we go about it? Frankenstein made his monster by sewing a brain into a body and then charging up his creation with a lightning bolt. Genetic engineers make patchwork organisms not by joining organs but by splicing genes together. So, let's get started on some basic operations."
You can see how friendly and readable the book is.
This book is for you if you are an undergraduate or high school student of biotechnology or if you are a layperson simply interested in the subject matter.

Stephen served as head of the ARF's Knowledge Center, and is presently Senior Consultant at his consulting firm. Scanning across the 197 metrics, the 30+ authoritative metrics sources, 150 research studies and reports cited and 12 essays by industry experts, i had to evaluate what did i learn?

For me the eyeopener was the use of endometrics (measures that come from within the system being measured) to evaluate one's business strategy.

Have a strategy, create a framework and be selective in measuring and reporting. And even more important, be modest to contribute success to specific actions or departments.

Which all reminded me of the old COPC acronym: CUIKA Collected, Usable, Integrity, Knowledgeable, Actions

De-stress with some light, fun, sexy MM reading

WOW. I started reading this book on a Sunday night, and didn't finish until noon on Monday, at which point I promptly fell asleep. I could not put it down, literally. First off, love the characters. Shaz and Billy really take up a big space in your heart. My favorite thing about Shaz is his confidence, and also just his ability to be himself without regard for anybody's judgements. My favorite thing about Billy is how fun-loving he is. In everything he does, there is just this underlying feeling that he likes to see the good in the world, and if he has a choice, he wants to see the fun in something rather than be scared by it, even though a lot of what he goes through is scary. And of course watching the two of them fall in love is perfect. Lain is a talented writer, and this story has plenty of drama, though not so much that you really hurt (there's only a little hurt!), which is good for me. This story is definitely sweet, but it's also humorous, like SUPER humorous. Laugh out loud quality. But this story is also just plain chock-full of delicious romance. I will definitely be reading this again, once I recover from my all-nighter! Can't get enough of these guys. Oh, and I don't think this is a spoiler...but...I love that these guys switch, so if you like a good, switchy couple, read this! Thank you, Tara Lain!

Amzingly wonderful M/M romance !!!

Wow, this is exciting, sexy, realistic, funny, serious, emotional, engrossing, heartwarming and I loved it !!! The deep characters are engaging, with an interesting tale to tell, and along with super hot sexiness, this is a worthwhile read. We have Billy Ballew, construction supervisor who has three failed engagements to women, is devoted to his family, coaches Little League, and has two cats, and a hard as nails bible quoting mom. He goes into the coffee shop and - wham - he sees Chase/Shaz, a beautiful man with flowing red hair, about to be punched by a homophobic ass. At 6'5", all he has to do is look at the man, and the man backs down. Shaz was braced for the hit, and is happy to be standing, looking at his "Knight". Later, when he's herded to a stylist to get fixed up for his sister's wedding, it's Shaz, the top-shelf celebrity stylist, who walks in. He's gorgeous, with long red hair, and the whole package is a sight to behold. Billy had a few encounters with gay men, but is beginning to realize he's more than interested, not just in any man, but only Shaz. The feeling is mutual. A deal is struck for fittings, a new set of clothes, and a promise of a photo session. We have a lot going on, with Shaz, his business expanding, and with Billy, who wants a Contractor's license and more in his life. The guys are getting to know a bit about each other and themselves and what they truly want. This is witty, funny, amazingly caring and defines their true love. Billy is brave and sweet, blossoming in his new gayness. Once he finds his true self, he owns it, and battles the homophobic work crew, bigoted Little League parents, his Mom. Flamboyant Shaz we find out has been hit and verbally abused by his father the minister. I loved the cats, and why they were named Clancy and Yerby, loved Shaz's stuffed cat named Barcheil and how important he was. (FYI: Barcheil was an ancient Hebrew Archangel of blessings) Loved the Bible knowledge Shaz wielded skillfully with Billy's Mom. Loved that these guys were perfect for one another, like pieces of a puzzle put into in place. Read it. Find out how Billy passed the Contractor's test.
I was engrossed in this amazingly beautiful story. Thank you so much Tara Lain for your well written tale.
I'll be re-reading this one, and I'll never forget it. It is that memorable.

A joyful offering. Great, satisfying read.

Other reviewers have stated much of what I felt reading this story. So what I want to say is that this author manages to capture joy. The joy of discovering who one really is and becoming expressive about it, both privately and publically. The joy of meeting the world head on and grabbing for the gusto after a life of flat, boring, sameness. The joy of finding someone to share your life with who just fits.

I look forward to the upcoming offering in the series as I'll get to meet the MCs again and discover the story of one of the secondary characters in this book. I've already preordered it.
