Despite her fastidious, ornately post-modern style, Carson finds her subject matter in classicism. The fruits of this unique, difficult combination are strikingly displayed in this selection of her published work. Seemingly composed of equal parts enigma, experiment and exegesis, Carson's writings incorporate a dizzying spectrum of forms?prose poem, mock interview, travel journal, academic essay. "Mimnermos: The Brainsex Paintings" explores what are perhaps figmentary fragments of the ancient Greek poet's work, which divulges "a kind of hunger for the motions of the self that we are mining still." The blurb-like, often humorous paragraphs and prose poems of "Short Talks" (which are "on" subjects as varied as chromoluminism and Sylvia Plath) and "The Life of Towns" (with stops in "Apostle Town" and "Town of Greta Garbo") afford the pleasure of a whimsical crossword puzzle. But Carson achieves a surreal, perplexing brilliance in "Canicula di Anna," a 53-section poem partially set in the paintings of the 16th-century artist Perugino. The final selection, "The Anthropology of Water," takes an abruptly confessional turn, though one measured (as the title suggests) by the poet's near-scientific intellectualism that, as in all these writings, gives her work a dazzling lucidity.

Carson's poetry and prose defy categorization as much as they blur the boundaries of their own forms. In fact, nearly formless, Carson's writing resists convention through word variation and substitution, stretching language to create new meanings, formulas, and outcomes. For example, in "The Life of Towns," town becomes a representative letter like a in the formula: if ab and bc, then ac. In other words, townviewpointself and self includes all the various vantage points and different ways of expressing vision. Carson, a professor of ancient Greek and Latin, incorporates classical languages and a mythological sensibility in surprising ways throughout her work. The strongest and most engaging section is "Short Talks" (from her book by that title), which was excerpted in the 1992 Best American Essays but could have just as easily appeared in a poetry anthology. The pieces have the appeal of haiku and the experimental quality of language poetry by Scalapino and Lauterbach. These "talks" gracefully unite the vivid metaphor and rhythm of poetry with the contemplative and digressive discourse of essay. Carson knows the rules of language and how to break them. This is stimulating, rare, and challenging writing, fabulous food for thought--for the adventurous reader. Janet St. John

Plainwater is a book heady with the theme of loss

Plainwater is a work of art that is unlike any contemporary piece of writing I've read. It's heady with the themes of loss and freedom and the narrator speaks from a place of quiet intensity that burns more vehemently with each observation. She is on a road-trip, the narrator, with a companion that threatens an isolation more profound than any found alone. Constantly is the backdrop, the theme, and the language of water. One can get lost in Carson's language and, like any work of poetry, the language crosses the line and becomes something else: you are at one point no longer reading but are taking in the narrator's interior life as your own. The landscape of your mind and the story has become one and the same through the median skin of the words. Can't recommend this book highly enough. Like Glass, Irony and God- it bespeaks of maps not really charted by any other contemporary writer but maps that any woman will recognize as partly her own. It crosses into philosophy and parable simply in its adherance to its own interiority: like Hesse, Goethe, Novalis, Holderlin, Rilke et al... it shifts into another kind of story, the kinds that are shamanistic, that place in the reader reflections of their own truth.

wow. i first picked up this book last week and am blown away. the work of anne carson seems to be speaking from a world only newly unearthed...grainy and weird and wonderful!

the last section of this book-- the anthropology of water-- is my favorite piece of writing i have ever read. it's amazing. you can read it 50 times and still get something new out of it.

About the Author
Dr. William Stallings has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, over 40 books on computer security, computer networking, and computer architecture. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients include computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. He has nine times received the award for the best Computer Science textbook of the year from the Text and Academic Authors Association.

He created and maintains the Computer Science Student Resource Site at ComputerScienceStudent.com. This site provides documents and links on a variety of subjects of general interest to computer science students (and professionals). He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia , a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology.

Dr. Lawrie Brown is a senior lecturer in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA) in Canberra, Australia. His professional interests include cryptography, communications and computer systems security, and most recently, the design of safe mobile code environments using the functional language Erlang. He has previously worked on the design and implementation of private key block ciphers, in particular the LOKI family of encryption algorithms. He currently teaches courses in computer security, cryptography, data communications and java programming, and conducts workshops in security risk assessment and firewall design.

Don't buy this Kindle e-book. It does not meet the requirements for most courses.

This Kindle e-book's description should read "Does not include any access to ...premium content". Without access to the Pearson premium content, you will be unable to complete your course of study. The e-book of this title from CourseMart does include premium content.

Informative & Recent

This was a required buy for class, although I didn't particularly mind this book. Terminology especially was very well defined, and honestly reading the book was probably better than going to class. Not to say that you shouldn't attend lectures, I simply had a very boring professor that was hard to pay attention to. This book made it easier to learn the material by comparing it with the professors lecture slides. Also did practice problems from the book, some of which were sort of tedious, but I suppose that's how they make sure you really know the material.

I never tried to use any supplemental online material from the book. I believe it did come with an online key, but it was never used so I can't say anything about it either way. I purchased the hardcover version of the book, not a digital copy.

Lousy licensing policy for this book

The publisher places a limit of two licenses on this book. I typically look at books on my home and office desktop PCs and laptop, so when I go to consult the book I often find that I cannot access it until I delete it from somewhere else. Given the high cost of the book license it seems they could be more generous. It would cost them nothing.

The average reader, however, would be quickly bored by the dry scholastic approach of the late R.C. Bald. It is a highly detailed, well-footnoted biography, but it is not for the casual reader.

a good source for reference

There is nothing to be found conncerning BIND 10 in this book.
But, I still like this book due to its comprehensiveness.
I use it as a source for reference.
This could - by the way - also be done from this books' predecessor.
Compared to this book several things have been changed, but in total it is only a revised version.

I would have appreciated this book to follow a more didactical approach (e.g starting with a simple example and 'improving' it)
To me it looks like a bunch of several technical terms collected altogether to have them in one single book.

Poorly written, bad examples.

The first third of the book is pretty well written and describes how the DNS system works on the internet. If the author would have left it at this point and just called the book "Pro DNS" all would be well. The problem in his book is when he gets to "Bind". First off (as a previous reviewer has stated) this book is NOT about Bind 10. In my case this wasn't a big deal, but it should be noted if that is of importance to you. My problem was with his example configuration files for Bind 9.7x. The author choose to jump around from file A, to file D, to File Q, then back to file D in a random hap-hazard method that is hard to follow. Even if you are able to follow his "logic" the example files are incorrect and inconsistent. I understand there are numerous ways to configure Bind, but please keep to one logical method and do not change up the methods throughout the book. Examples are when you are setting up zone transfers. In some cases he typed allow-transfer (none;);}; in other examples it is allow-transfer ("none";);}; and there is not mention as to why, or if it was a typo.

Overall the book needs some tech review and should be named "Pro DNS and Bind 9.7".

BIND 10 - NOT in this book!!!

This book is incorrectly titled with the latest version of BIND, which it does NOT cover. I waited for this book to ship for well over a month, and now it arrives with a caveat on the cover that it covers up to version 9.7. That wasn't on the image of the cover page when I purchased the book. If you are looking for a reference on BIND 10, you will have to look elsewhere.

This is my 11 year old's favorite calligraphy book. He initially borrowed from the local library, and after three times, I decided to get him the book to keep. Even though this book is not new, but the condition is very good.

Charlie the Choo-Choo, Music and Good Wholesome Fun

Do you like trains? Have you ever taken a ride on a train?

The author, Beryl Evans, has written a riveting book about Charlie the Choo-Choo, and his Engineer Bob. They both worked for the Mid-World Railway Company, and their route was from St Louis to Topeka. This was a very busy line, and Bob and Charlie were the very best. They were the fastest and the best. Charlie was a 402 Big Boy locomotive, and he ran on coal. Together had many, many fun runs together, until one day, Bob could hear someone singing. When you read this book, you will discover who was singing, and several other big secrets.

Adults will enjoy reading this book to their children, and children who can read by themselves will also love this story. This is the kind of story with a lesson to be learned, and often those are the very best. This is a fun story that may elicit many questions from children. What is coal? How does a train run on coal? Who was singing? The illustrations by Ned Dameron are bright, vivid and colorful, and they depict Charlie the Choo-Choo and Engineer Bob in all their glory. What a wonderful life for both of them. And, now we have newer trains, but are
they as much fun as Charlie Choo-Choo? As Stephen King, another author, has said, if he were to write a children's book it would be just like this!

Plenty of zip and zowie for Dark Tower fans

I bought this book strictly for the connection to Stephen King's Dark Tower book series, but found it an interesting (perhaps a little unconventional) children's book in its own right. A close look at the illustrations does reveal that Charlie the Choo-Choo might be just a little "off," but the story is a pretty straightforward tale of friendship, loyalty, and usefulness. This is a neat little book for fans of Stephen King, perhaps less so for little kids who just want to hear a bedtime story.

Read-aloud storytellers should note that there is one use of the word "hell" in the book. The pictures (check out Charlie's facial expression in the photo below) and storyline might be a little unsettling or sad to the smallest kids.

Another great addition to our Stephen King collection.

My hubby is a huge Stephen King fan and had read the book that this is referenced in so he's been anticipating it for some time now. We have 2 little boys and he intends to read it to them, the illustrations seem a bit creepy to me but I guess it is Stephen King afterall. The book is well made and we love how they went along with the fake author's name and publishing dates, etc. to tie into the adult SK book it was mentioned in. Very clever.
