Beth Bailey is professor of American studies and Regents Lecturer at the University of New Mexico. Her books include Sex in the Heartland and From Front Porch to Backseat. David Farber is professor of history at the University of New Mexico. His books include The Age of Great Dreams: America in the 1960s and The Sixties: From Memory to History. They are coauthors of The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s and The First Strange Place.

I subscribe to the 5 x a week Delancey Place email book excerpts because it expands my horizons as to what kinds of books I might like to read. In this case, I became an adult during the 70's and it was enlightening to me to read about the social changes that were taking place (at a macro level) and comparing them to my own experiences (at a micro level), like finding my first professional job as a woman in the marketplace, hearing about computers that you could actually have in your home (instead of creating stacks and stacks of punch cards to be feed into the enormous card readers at the all night campus computer center), The essays are well-written and foot noted, so if you want to burrow on back to the primary sources, you can,

Interesting Overview Of The Decade

The lighthearted cover of this one, with photos of Archie and Edith Bunker, Farrah Fawcett and John Travolta's disco stance, is a bit misleading. This is not a light read, geared toward the fad culture of the seventies. Instead, this is a studied look at the politics, social movements and major influences of the decade.

I found some of the writing in these essays dry, even for nonfiction. Others, like 'She "can bring home the bacon"', which covered the women's liberation movement and "Adults Only", which talked about the so-called sexual revolution, fascinated me.

Whether you grew up during the seventies, as I did, were an older adult or a glimmer in your parents' eyes, this book offers a perspective of the much overlooked decade that can only be seen in hindsight.

Were The Seventies a Truly Great Decade?

Around the early 1990's, there began a nostalgic mania for everything 70's. Bell-bottoms, seen as a joke in the 1980's, were back in style. Disco, once the butt of jokes, was popular again. Perhaps the movie "Dazed and Confused" inspired it? But since nobody born after 1975 could remember the 70's, could young people really understand the issues of the time?

This book about 1970's America offers fresh and disturbing angles on the decade. One of the examples is the movie "Looking for Mister Goodbar" with Diane Keaton. The author uses this to show a side of the "Sexual Revolution" that college professors and horny college guys speak of frequently. Discussions of the 1970's attitude towards "free sex" is usually positive; it was a decade where consenting adults had the new freedom to explore sexuality. But the author has a darker view. Women could easily put themselves in a dangerous situations, in a decade before AIDS made us wary. He also wonders if the sense of rebellion among American women led them to make poor judgments with men, as does the character in the movie. The protagonist has a respectable job, and by night she seeks dangerous relationships. Is she rebelling against her "good girl" persona? Did rebellion lead naive girls into dangerous lifestyles? Is this a topic we can discuss without looking like male chauvinists?

Some look back fondly at the "good old days." Others say there were never any "good old days." 1970's New York was a crime-ridden hellhole, which is why my parents moved to Queens in 1980. But people still look at the 70's as a decade of color, fashion, music, and culture. Sometimes we even feel nostalgic for the grimy, dirty, New York City streets from "Taxi Driver" and "Deathwish," although at the same time you can't disappreciate the reduction in crime in the last 20 years. Today, you see retro-80's clothing in the stores, but for me it brings back no fond memories. Someone born after 1985 won't remember the AIDS scare, Iran, the Cold War, the Crack epidemic, and the things that me feel NO nostalgia for the era.

Perhaps nostalgia sometimes blinds us to reality.

I love this book, but the information is hard to use

This is one of the best books I've seen that address building architectural design considerations that affect heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. It presents tidbits from real designs, focuses on maximizing the effects of the local climate on the building toward the objective of a comfortable and usable living/working space, and addresses supplemental systems as well. This information presumes a level of knowledge relating to some of these concepts that I don't currently have, making it a pretty hard read in many places. However, the book digs pretty deep into each area, providing enough information to get a good start on a building design. The fusion of engineering and creativity is my favorite feature of this book. It provides insight into creative building designs while also presenting the more quantitative factors necessary to size and evaluate a design for intended use.

sustainability strategies

Still trying to adapt to the new interface of this book , the diagrams that denote the design strategies are very very small, .
i cannot make a good evaluation at the moment as i am still trying to understand the book.
How ever at first glance it seems to give a lot of insight on sustainable strategies . the book build feels very delicate but the steel ring allows for complete 180 deg page flipping.

Carlos Slim: Who Knew?

For some reason Carlos Slim, perennially listed as one of the world's richest men, if not the world's very richest, is someone I've never known much about. I've read a bit about Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Mark Zuckerberg and some of the other usual suspects among the world's wealthiest, but never anything about Carlos Slim. Until now. Author/editor Tanni Haas has rectified my ignorance by putting together this small but rich volume full of the musings, comments, observations and advice of the man. That most of his wealth comes through a telecommunications empire came as no surprise somehow, but I had no idea that he is the largest shareholder in the New York Times Company besides the Ochs-Sulzberger family. And that's only the beginning of his diversification. Meanwhile, he's lived a fairly low key life, without lavishness. Interesting. But the best thing about this book is that you get a good sense of Slim himself, in his own words, because Tanni Haas has done his homework and gathered quote after quote by Carlos Slim on a variety of topics. Not every single thing Slim says is profound. Why would it be? But his years of public life reveal him to be a plainspoken clear-sighted individual with a very large supply of common sense. This is a fun book, and it's beautifully organized by topic, so that everything in it is easy to find. You can read it cover to cover or browse through it or jump around, backwards and forwards - whatever suits your fancy. Perfect for the bedside. Thanks, Mr. Haas, for putting this volume together.

If you read a couple of interviews of Carlos Slim it is enough. No need to read this book. However, it is combination of all the highlights of his speeches. Good for those who doesn't want to read his interviews one by one.

King's new novel, a numbing variation on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, offers its own best commentary on itself. Nearly one-third of the way through the 560-page book, protagonist Bobbi Anderson, a writer of westerns, describes what she has stumbled upon in her backyard to her friend Gardener, an alcoholic poet: "It was a flying saucer. No self-respecting science-fiction writer would put one in his story, and if he did, no self-respecting editor would touch it with a ten-foot pole.. . . It is the oldest wheeze in the book." After the vampirish Tommyknockers in the spaceship have wrought their evil magic upon the inhabitants of Haven (Tommyknockers live on the blood of comatose humans circulated through mind-reading PCs connected to VCRs), the unfortunate townspeople have, it seems, "become" (the word, over-used and never explained, is King's) "something else" (the vague words are also the author's). The "gadgets" of the town "become" living beings that kill (there are marauding hedge cutters and Coke machines, Electrolux vacuums, Yamaha motorcycles and flying smoke detectors ) and The Tommyknockers is consumed by the rambling prose of its author. Taking a whole town as his canvas, King uses too-broad strokes, adding cartoonlike characters and unlikely catastrophes like so many logs on a fire; ultimately he loses all semblance of style, carefully structured plot or resonant meaning, the hallmarks of his best writing. It is clear from this latest work that King himself has "become" a writing machinethis is his fourth novel since It was published 14 months ago; the faithful readers not overwhelmed by his latest fictional "gadget" are likely to wonder, as poet Gardener does near the novel's end: "What had it all been for? He realized miserably that he was never going to know."

Yet another mammoth horror novel from King, this dark tale depicts a small town's fatal encounter with creatures from outer space. Events start with Roberta Anderson, a writer of Old West novels, unearthing a flying saucer on her remote wooded property. Five hundred pages later alcoholic poet Jim Gardener, Roberts's former English teacher, finds himself aboard the flying saucer in outer space. In the interval the creatures (Tommyknockers) destroy the citizenry of Haven, Maine. While this is not one of King's more original novels, it does have plenty of blood and guts, macabre humor, and a well-wrought realization of the New England countryside. A book for people of a certain age.

I am about the same age as Stephen King and have read his works throughout my adult life. I think most readers are too young to appreciate this book.

Stephen King's early works, assembelled in chronological order, are all symbolic stories of stages in his own life. "Carrie" is about high school, "Salem's Lot" about love and loss in early adulthood, "The Shining" about the anxieties of fatherhood. "It" is about the reworking of childhood issues in mid-life. All great fiction talks to us on a subconcious level.

"Tommy Knockers" is about aging and death. Time possesses and mutates all of us, makes our teeth and hair fall out, truncates our dreams, makes us unrecognizable from our youthful selves. This is a sad book, and unlike King's earlier works the protagonists have no power to fight such an enemy. Affirming the value of love, however futile, in the face of death is the point of the book.

Why the negativity? This is a gripping read

Okay, to be honest, the book gets gripping after one slogs through the first 200 pages. Before that, we spend a looong time getting to know Bobbi Anderson and Jim Gardener. But once the book expands its narrative to include the members of the entire town of Haven, the book does not let up.
The first two hundred pages, and a bit too much techno jargon prevent me from fully bestowing this book with a full 5 stars. King has clearly done his homework on this book, but after a while, all the descriptions of the souped up gadgets made my eyes swim (much as Tolkien's endless landscape descriptions in "Lord of the Rings" made me wish good old John Ronald Reuel had pioneered the minimalist writing style.)
The Tommyknockers, while not my favorite King novel, is a great effort. people may complain about an anti-climactic ending (They must have read the ending to a different book, the climax I read was rather exciting)or the fact that the characters seem to stumble down a path of destruction. Well, that happens in life as well. I think King's writing is at the top of its form... I think the scene when Jim Gardener drunkenly ruins an all too polite cocktail party with a rant against the destructive powers of nuclear energy is one of the most powerful scenes in all of King's canon, and one of the most chilling without benefit of any super- or preter- natural interference. Despite all of the evil the characters in his novels have faced (indeed, Pennywise the clown makes a brief appearance in a city sewer, which is odd as this tale is to have taken place 3 years after the events in IT... one thinks King's editors add the dates of the events of his novels to coincide with the publication dates and not to correspond with when the novels were actually written. We also encounter a minor character from the Dead Zone, and "blink and you'll miss them" references to "Firestarter" and "Salem's Lot.") the novel makes it explicit that the things that men do in the name of scientific progress can be equally as terrifying as a young girl posessed of psionic abilities. True, the analogy between nuclear power and the Tommyknockers polluting the air is about as subtle as Annie Wilkes expressing discontent, but hey, it was written in the 80's, but it loses none of its power. (No pun intended).
This is a very good book, probably one of the most down to earth (again, no pun intended) science fiction/horror tales around. And that's the good thing about King... he writes wonderfully engrossing tales that are accessible to everyone. And that, to quote Martha, is a good thing.

Just another Stephen King novel... or is it?

The Tommyknockers is not your typical horror novel. Stephen King goes above and beyond our expectations, bringing us mystery, suspense, and an incredible twist at the end that leaves us begging for more. You'll never look at small towns the same after visiting the seemingly innocent community of Haven, Maine, where the story takes place. The superhuman powers and horror that follows after Bobbi Andersons shocking discovery on her property will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire novel. Though the length of the book may seem intimidating at first, do not be deterred; it's an easy read, a constant page turner, and worth every minute! Much like the outsiders around the town of Haven, once you get in to explore the Tommyknockers, there will be no turning back.

Great play for your theatre!

We produced this play in 2011 and it was a huge hit with audiences in Houston! Urbinati has crafted a laughter-filled union of Noel Coward and Agatha Christie: all the fun of deciphering an English whodunit with a cast of witty and chic non-conformists. Sold out houses and standing ovations every night, a sure fire hit! Highly recommend!

Just Torrent the 2nd Edition

Yes, folks! The 2nd edition can be found floating around the Internet somewhere in the form of a free torrent file. Every time a new college semester is breathing down my neck, the mere thought of buying textbooks fills me with a sense of impending doom. Do you realize just how much college textbooks cost? One textbook can easily cost just as much as the tuition of one college credit! It's true.

And because of that fact, it is apparent that the publishers of college textbooks are out to rape the (already empty) pockets of our poor students. These publishers churn out edition after edition every 2 to 3 years just to capitalize on and pillage the future generations of our society, and this has to STOP! Do we really need more editions of a textbook that portray the same basic, underlying theories and information but with differently arranged pictures, colors, and verbiage? NO! I am very proud and fortunate to have located a free torrent file of this textbook on the vast computerized sea called the Internet, and I encourage you all to conduct your own online research and do the same.
