`Men just aren't in touch with their emotions, or if they are at times, they are too blunt about them.'

Jason Akley. We know too little about him. He is the son of a colonel in the United States Air Force, and has traveled extensively across America and Europe following his father's military assignments. He currently resides in Illinois, enjoying the presence of his two daughters. He started writing stories at the age of eight, and has had his poetry published in two books. He is the author of children's books (`Sweet Pea and the Bumble Bee' and `The Candlestick') the hefty tome `Lazarus', the experimental book `Rick's Place', and `The Psalmist'. Akley has a BS degree from Tulane University in physics and mathematical economics. But to discover what the man is truly about it is necessary to read his books. This reviewer has now read his entire output and his ability to connect with the reader is similar to the gift that imbues Bukowski's writings, the poetic balance of such poets as John Berryman, Allen Ginsberg, and Hart Crane, and the imagination and flights of fantasy that circle reality like few others writing today.

SALTED WITH SALT: Writer Solomon Cross doesn't quite fit in - strange shoes to fit strange feet. Odd relationships with people that cross his life path - and in trying to find some significance to it all he piles his necessities into his car hand heads across country to meet up with college friends. The story is his Sol's journey - and as the author has summarized, `it is a universal voyage into the tragedy and comedy of human nature; a sentimental journey that celebrates life in all its nuances for everyone to enjoy. It is an examination of Sol's imperfections--sometimes ugly, but at the same time beautiful, adding spice to life and sculpting his humanity.' On his journey he explores the creative process, aware of his flaws and fallibility, writing sic stories that reference to the Seven Deadly Sins only to discover that what he has written are mirror reflections of his own flaws. It is the conversational style Sol has with people he visits interspersed with his stories that makes reading this little novella such a pleasure.

THE ALTAR OF SILENCE concerns John, Jim and Ray, three friends since college rooming days whose tales share how life can inadvertently pass us by on our quest for adulthood. Jim is a surfer and perennial teenager who goes from job to job and woman to woman; John is the solid but boring married man with a wife, kids, and a mortgage; Ray has the terrible past that threatens to ruin the man he could become. a story of lost youth and lessons that have yet to be learned - John, Jim and Ray are three friends know each other as rooming together in college. Jim is the surfer-the perennial teenager who goes from job to job and woman to woman; John (the narrator) is the solid married man with a wife, kids, and a mortgage; then there's Ray, rather on the outside because of his association with the shooting of his brother, a fact that threatens to ruin the man he could become. Lost youth and the lesson of living as a purposeful adult that must be learned.

In these brief novellas Jason Akley is often at his best, as though confined space rations his attention to deal with simply gut level emotions without extraneously wanderings. Pungent, reader friendly, these stories aim right for the gut and score. Grady Harp, May 14

This book is much better than the "Altar"natives! @badwordplay

I very much enjoyed Lazarus, by Jason Akley, but was a little shell shocked with how dense that book was. I saw that he has this collections of two novellas, so I thought that this would be both a good change in pace as far as reading difficulty and engagement, while at the same time getting more of this new author that I like. Hey, everybody needs an easy, lighter read every now and again, right?

Salted with Salt follows Solomon Cross (a man whose name couldn't have more of a religious tinge to it if he was named Jesus Bibleman), as he sets out to reunite with old college friends. But the trip quickly turns into one of self-discovery. It is a fantastic and sincere look at that journey that everyone will take in their head at one time or another. At least I hope we all will...

The Altar of Silence is a fairly similar premise, but with 3 friends learning that they each have some growing up to do, and some things to learn themselves. The relationships between the 3 friends were very interesting, and how they helped each other and themselves along the way was very cool. I enjoyed this story a little better than “Salt”, actually.

You know, after going through my library, I'm glad that I didn't stop reading after reading Crossroads from Damascus. I didn't really enjoy that book all that much, but there was something about the author's style that intrigued me. That was enough for me to try Lazarus, and I was not disappointed, and now I just finished this book. I have to say that, while I don't enjoy everything Akley writes, I enjoy the way he writes it, and when the story engages with me in some way, then I'm sold

Full of friendship.

Jason Akley has put together two novellas into one e-book which I love! There are two titles here one I love the most just because it makes me think of margaritias "Salted with Salt" and "The Altar of Silence" because .. well, who doesn't value a good altar?

I read them in order because I'm a rule follower and I think that they are best read in order because The Altar was my favorite and it was at the end so it gives the entire book a better feel to me. I did very much enjoy both books, but the second was my favorite.

Salted with Salt follows Soloman's journey to some deeper understanding about life by reuniting with college friends and having a trip to rediscover some youthful feelings and emotion. Sometimes we can learn the most about ourselves when we are surrounded by people we made early discoveries and memories with.

The Altar of Silence is the same premise of self discovery approached differently and I related to it more because it was more of in the moment discoveries and relied more heavily on friendship for self growth. I clicked more with this story and I loved the inter workings of the friendships.

Great job Jason Akley!

About the Author
Margaret Millar (1915-1994) was born in Ontario, Canada and was educated at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto, majoring in classics. In 1938 she married Kenneth Millar (who wrote under the name Ross Macdonald). She published her first novel, The Invisible Worm, in 1941 and she worked as a screenwriter for Warner Brothers. She was active in the conservation movement in California in the 1960s and was named a Woman of the Year by the Los Angeles Times in 1965, and in 1982 she became a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America.

A Haunting Read

More than a mystery this is a gothic chiller with a modern twist. Even more than 40 years after it was written, it still holds its spell. Helen Clarvoe is being stalked by a female psycho, who might or might-not be a childhood friend. Meanwhile Evelyn Merrick (or someone who claims to be her) is closing in on Helen, a wealthy heiress absconded in a hotel in L.A.
Who's the hunter? Who's the prey?
This horrifying story will grab you and won't let go till the gory, devastating and haunting conclusion... but do not peek! The narrative will take you there.

Prepare to be dazzled

Margaret Millar writes like an angel. I am so glad to have discovered her and that the publishing world is "rediscovering" such a great talent. Her plotting and characterizations hold their own with the well known British writers. The denouement will not shock readers in the year 2000 as it did readers in 1962. Apart from that quibble, this is a perfect novel of suspense.

A reclusive heiress, Miss Clarvoe, who lives in a residential hotel in Hollywood and rarely ventures out, begins to receive threatening and malicious phone calls from someone who claims to be her old school friend, Evelyn Merrick. Evelyn was briefly married to Dougie, Miss Clarvoes' brother, before their marriage was annulled after a few days. The caller is someone who enjoys preying on peoples' weaknesses and who gets a thrill by terrifying them with vile, sexually oriented scenarios. Miss Clarvoes' mother asks an old family friend to investigate the calls and, in doing so, he stumbles on a set of circumstances that are so out of character with the people who are receiving the calls, that he is really alarmed. This is a story written in the sixties so perhaps the denouement isn't quite so shocking as it would have been back then but...she kept me guessing up to the last page!

Terrible Print Job

Looks like they printed out a PDF of the book that was originally scanned-in onto magnetic tape in the 80's, except that their printer could only take 3.5" floppy's, so they turned up the JPEG compression to the max, in order to get it to fit the 1.4 Mb disk size. Then painstakingly glued the whole mess into a decent looking soft cover binding.

Must take a lot of manual labor, hand cranking that printer, which explains the exorbitant price.

The textbook is good, but despite so many editions is full of mistakes (mainly the statistical exercises). For the price you would expect this book to be perfect.

Horrible printing

I'm terribly disappointed with this textbook. It looked like copies were made from copies of copies of the hardback version on an office copy machine. (No, I did not accidentally put too many 'copies' in that last sentence.) Some of the pages were crooked and the text quality was very poor. I expect a lot more for $170. This was not a single copy problem. I exchanged my first copy for a second one that was just the same. In the end I rented a hardback copy from elsewhere.

Interesting, provoking and a bit simplistic

A whole new mind is Dan Pink, from Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us fame, his earlier book. The premise of the book is that the previous century was ruled by "left-brain" analytical thinking, but that the next century will be for people who are right-brained, conceptual, creative, people *and* also left-brained, analytical. In other words, people who use their whole mind.

The book consists of 2 parts, The first part is short and clarifies left/right brained thinking and what the author means with the conceptual age, the whole new mind and "high concept, high touch". The second part goes over the "6 senses" that will be important during the conceptual age.

Part 1 is reasonable small (about 50 pages) and starts with the author explaining a little bit about how our brain works and a summary of his understanding of the current brain research. Then the second chapter explains the reason for the change from the information age to the conceptual age: abundance, asia, and automation (more on this later), and the last chapter of this part then explains what the author considers the next age, the conceptual age where people will need to use both their right and left brain, their whole brain.

Let me comment a bit on chapter 2, which I found by far the worst chapter in the book. This is important as this chapter is the "reason" behind the start of the conceptual age. Dan Pink claims that the reason for the conceptual age are: Abundance, Asia, and Automation. For Abundance, I think he makes some interesting and good arguments. We're moving from an age where you have more than enough of 'things' and therefore the 'things' that you have are becoming less importance than others such as the ascetic design or spirituality. His discussions about Asia miss the mark completely (having lived in Asia for over a decade). His argument is that left-brained work will go to 'cheaper' people in Asia and that trend will continue. In my opinion, the author is missing a few key points. First, he never clarifies why "whole-mind" jobs wouldn't go to Asia? It seems as if he has the opinion that people in Asia don't have a whole mind, but only the left part. Next, of course, the labor cost is Asia is going up rapidly. Lastly, he frequently refers back to Software Development and in that domain, the amount of offshore development has probably decreased rather than increased. Also on automation, I think he is off IMHO. He is right that automation is going to be more important and that it will influence how people work but he is missing the perspective that automation actually helps people do their job, rather than just replaces their job (a view promoted by the Lean movement). I felt the base of the book was shaky, but I did agree with the fact that the "6 senses" are important and that its importance will grow.

Part 2 covers what Dan Pink calls "the 6 senses" which are 6 'skills' that are extra important in the conceptual age. These are 1) Design, 2) Story, 3) Symphony, 4) Empathy, 5) Play, and 6) Meaning. Each of these sentence has their own chapter (each of about 30 pages) which explains the senses and gives stories and examples (in the typical journalistic style of writing). The stories were enjoyable, and the examples illustrative.

All in all, I felt the book was ok. It was a good read, well written but didn't have any *wow* feelings or strong *aha* moments. The book did what I had sort-of expected, with the exception of the second chapter which I felt provided a poor background to the rest of the book. So, all in all, the book is an ok read yet I wouldn't strongly recommend it and if you ask me what the book was about in a few years, I'll probably have to re-read this review :) 3-stars therefore.

The Rise of the Conceptual Age!

As best summarized by the author: "This book describes a seismic--though as yet undetected--shift now under way in much of the advanced world. We are moving from an economy and a society built on the logical, linear, computerlike capabilities of the Information Age to an economy and a society built on the inventive, empathic, big-picture capabilities of what's rising in its place, the Conceptual Age."

1- "A change of such magnitude is complex. But the argument at the heart of this book is simple. For nearly a century, Western society in general, and American society in particular, has been dominated by a form of thinking and an approach to life that is narrowly reductive and deeply analytical. Ours has been the age of the "knowledge worker," the well-educated manipulator of information and deployer of expertise. But that is changing. Thanks to an array of forces - material abundance that is deepening our nonmaterial yearnings. globalization that is shipping white-collar work overseas, and powerful technologies that are eliminating certain kinds of work altogether--we are entering a new age. It is an age animated by a different form of thinking and a new approach to life--one that prizes aptitudes that I call "high concept" and "high touch." High concept involves the capacity to detect patterns and opportunities, to create artistic and emotional beauty, to craft a satisfying narrative, and to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something new. High touch involves the ability to empathize with others, to understand the subtleties of human interaction, to find joy in one's self and to elicit it in others, and to stretch beyond the quotidian in pursuit of purpose and meaning."

wonderful book.

wonderful book.....

I am in my 60's and taking a ceramics class in a local college.... this book was required reading.....so....it was interesting, after reading it, to sit down and have a book discussion in class with people of all ages....and hear the ideas this book sparked. Mr. Pink brings all the warmth and fuzziness of your grandmother together with the logic of your math teacher and fuses together the import attributes that will fuel this age. Integrating the right minded capabilities of empathy , creativity and all the right brain attributes with the left brain attributes of logic, order etc. I would encourage everyone....of any age.....to read this illuminating book.

STEVEN C. A. PINCUS(Ph.D., Harvard University) is professor of history at Yale University. A good historical source with poor conclusions

The introduction is incredibly short for the turbulence of the period Pincus covers and the documents are obviously selective. If you subscribe to Whig ideology then this book is undoubtedly for you, but if you are a student of history looking for a balanced narrative of a crucial period in England's history as well as the globe's, don't waste your time with this.

I was disappointed with this book after reading the introduction, only to find Pincus's analysis of the Glorious Revolution is essentially a reiteration of whig literature. He puts no new material into the analysis and essentially lacks any critical thinking all together. His connections to his thesis are either blurred or non-existent which really weakens his claims.

Pincus claims the Glorious Revolution is 'revolutionary' due to three attributes:
1.Changes in English foreign policy
2. Changes in English political thought
3. Changes in the Church of England

What Pincus fails to do is explain why or how any of these connect to his thesis that the Revolution was indeed revolutionary. He does not even acknowledge all three of these things are more so changes brought about by William III's political agenda rather than some ideological change brought about by the rational, liberty-loving English Protestants. He takes a somewhat ultra-whig approach and his perspective is thus grossly out of date.

His choice of documents is also lacking, one example being his views on how the Church of England became more tolerant after the Revolution. This ofcourse is true in relation to Protestants, but certainly not for Catholics who were only further alienated from English society legally. Pincus ofcourse fails to acknowledge this and even refuses to portray this well known fact with his selective choice of just one, incredibly biased document covering the entire aspect of religious toleration.

I rate this book 3 stars because the history in the narrative is both true and useful as well as the documents when applied. However, the story is told with a radical bias and is sufficiently lacking in detail and balance. Pincus fails to defend his own claims and appropriately denounce others in adequate fashion.

Previous reviewer missed author's point. Essentials of the essentials here, but its not about the battles and intrigues, weaponry and wagons. Its an essay on some of the subtle whys. Not a klift notes type outline.

Naveena Singh is a Consultant Histo- and Cytopathologist at Barts�Health NHS Trust�with specialist interests in gynecological histopathology and cytology.�In addition to routine cytology, gynecological and non-gynecological, she is one of a team of consultants who offer a rapid diagnostic service for symptomatic and screen-detected breast lesions at 'one-stop' clinics.
